Byron Leftwich was held out of Bucs OTAs with a groin strain on Friday by coach Raheem Morris, even though he felt he could play according to The St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Leftwich is bidding to become the Bucs starting quarterback this season with his main competition being Luke McCown. He has not been a regular starter since 2005 in Pittsburgh, so even if he earns the job he likely won't be a great fantasy option.

Byron Leftwich is slimming down in his bid to win the starting gig at quarterback in Tampa Bay, according to Pro Football Weekly. He trimmed 10 pounds off his frame, and is listed at 250.

Our View:He is competing with Luke McCown for the No. 1 role. Josh Freeman is expected to hold the clipboard as the third option as a rookie. The Buccaneers have a solid supporting cast for the strong-armed Leftwich to succeed. Antonio Bryant broke out in 2008 as the No. 1 receiver, and they added elite tight end Kellen Winslow in the offseason.

Byron Leftwich had a good day of practice Thursday, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Leftwich fired several touchdown passes during a red-zone session. He also hooked up with receiver Dexter Jackson and tight end Kellen Winslow for big plays during a drill with the offense backed up near its own goal line.

Our View:This is encouraging for Leftwich as he battles Luke McCown for the starting gig at quarterback. The Buccaneers have a good enough supporting cast for the winner of the job to succeed.

The Buccaneers signed eight undrafted rookies, according to the St. Petersburg Times. The club signed: center Rob Bruggeman (Iowa), safety C.J. Byrd (Georgia), tackle Andre Douglas (Temple), defensive tackle Rashaad Duncan (Pittsburgh), cornerback Marshall McDuffie (Florida International), guard Maurice Miller (Mississippi), running back Josh Vaughan (Richmond) and cornerback DeAngelo Willingham (Tennessee).

Our View:Bruggeman is intelligent and a hard-worker, but lacks strength and good balance. Duncan performed well down the stretch with Pittsburgh last season, which is why the Buccaneers will give him a shot to compete for a roster spot. Miller is versatile, but needs to work on his footwork. Vaughan has good size, but lacks speed or quickness.

Despite the comments from rookie Josh Freeman, the Buccaneers may have a on-field use for quarterback Byron Leftwich. Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post says the reason the team signed Leftwich was because Luke McCown was not impressive during a recent mini-camp.

Our View:It's widely known (or assumed) that Freeman will need a full year of development, and we still think the Leftwich signing was a good move. McCown is far, far from an established NFL quarterback. Leftwich never lived up to his draft hype, but he should be able to run that offense fairly efficiently, if called upon.
