The New Orleans Saints, after cutting kicker Taylor Mehlhaff, will hold tryouts, and among those getting a look-see are Billy Cundiff and Dave Rayner, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Our View:Mehlhaff was slashed after missing an extra point last week against the Chargers. The team had earlier placed Martin Gramatica on IR, though he had not performed well either.

Billy Cundiff auditioned for the Broncos, according to ProFootballTalk.com. Fellow placekickers Piotr Czech and Garrett Hartley were tried out by Denver as well.

Our View:This is odd that the Broncos are working out kickers, as rookie Matt Prater is displaying a strong leg and has only missed one field goal in 14 attempts. Perhaps Prater is nursing an undisclosed injury. We will keep you posted on the situation.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be evaluating three place kickers during the offseason including journeymen Nick Novak, Billy Cundiff and free agent rookie Connor Barth, according to the Kansas City Star. “We’ll have to decide at the end of the day if one of these three guys is the guy or do we have to go out and get one of those old guys who doesn’t want to come to training camp?” coach Herm Edwards said. “Hopefully we don’t have to do that, but if we have to, we’ll do it.”

Our View:Novak and Cundiff are already kicking during informal workouts. Barth will join them when offseason practice begins in two weeks. The “old guys” Edwards referred to include John Carney, who kicked for the Chiefs toward the end of last season, and former Indianapolis kicker Mike Vanderjagt, who worked out for them early in the spring. Both are free agents.

Billy Cundiff signed a 2-year deal to kick for the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday according to the AP. Dave Rayner wasn't able to give the team any consistency in 2007, he made only 12 of 18 kicks under 49 yards in 10 games before being replaced by John Carney. Not an exciting signing to be sure, but at least the Chiefs shouldn't have to deal with any of the troubles they experienced last season.

Billy Cundiff was one of Atlanta's cuts Saturday, which means Matt Prater will open the year as the Falcons placekicker.
