Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat indicated that Shaun Hill threw the ball very well during drills Wednesday. He displayed solid mobility when he moved to the right to avoid a blitzing Patrick Willis up the middle as well.

Our View:Alex Smith also had a good day of practice, and the pair will continue to battle for the No. 1 role at quarterback. The 49ers raised their chances of succeeding by selecting wide receiver Michael Crabtree with their top pick in the draft.

Shaun Hill is clearly in the lead for the starting QB position with the Niners ahead of Alex Smith, but new OC Jimmy Raye says that no decision has been made as to who will be named the starter, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Our View:Hill traditionally looks better in game action, he isn't impressive on the practice field, though one would have to think that despite the fact no starter has been named that he will have to falter substantially to cede the spot to Smith.

The 49ers indicated that they have not ruled out drafting a quarterback, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. GM Scot McCloughan said, "It is not like we would draft a guy and have him compete for the starting job. You cannot force the issue. I have no problem going into training camp with those two (Shaun Hill and Alex Smith) battling it out. I would love to add some competition. I would like to get better at the position."

Our View:Top prospects Matthew Stafford (Georgia) and Mark Sanchez (USC) will likely be gone by the time the 49ers pick at No. 10, but they could consider Josh Freeman (Kansas State) if available in the second-round, or take a cnance on a guy like Nate Davis (Ball State) later.

While Shaun Hill probably has the best chance of being the 49ers' starting quarterback next season, coach Mike Singletary insisted that there would be an open competition for the job in training camp, according to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.

Our View:Hill posted an 87.5 quarterback rating in nine games last season and showed the ability to win games. He completed 62.8 percent of his 288 passes and threw 13 touchdowns against eight interceptions.

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat believes Shaun Hill has the best chance to start at quarterback in 2009 among the options currently on the 49ers' roster.

Our View:J.T. O'Sullivan has less of a chance at the job with top supporter Mike Martz no longer the offensive coordinator. Alex Smith may also return, but Hill should hold the edge, as he maintained a 87.5 efficiency rating with 13 touchdown passes over nine games in 2008.
