Player Notes
November 16, 2008
Defensive end Julius Peppers registered two sacks in the Week 11 win over the Lions. It was his second straight game with multiple sacks, and he is up to nine on the season.

Our View:Peppers has been very active the last two weeks and has turned back into the stud of old. IDP owners likely got a bargain, as his price was down heading into 2008.
November 12, 2008
Julius Peppers has been named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his Week 10 performance, according to Carolinagrowl.com.

Our View:Peppers recorded three sacks, two forced fumbles and seven tackles in the game. The defensive end has recorded seven sacks and four forced fumbles already this year.
November 9, 2008
Julius Peppers had a big day in Week 10 against the Raiders. The defensive end finished with seven tackles, three tackles for losses, one quarterback hurry, one pass defensed and two forced fumbles.

Our View:This was by far Pepper's best game of the 2008 season. The Raiders offensive line could not contain him at all.
October 5, 2008
Defensive end Julius Peppers had only one tackle in the Week 5 win over the Chiefs, but it was a sack that forced a fumble. Fellow lineman Damione Lewis recovered the muff.

Our View:That's three straight games with a sack for Peppers. Considering he had only 2.5 sacks in all of 2007, that's no small feat. We're not sure he's fully back to his old, elite-level form, but Julius is looking better these days.
October 3, 2008
Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers was fined for his hit on Atlanta rookie quarterback Matt Ryan, according to NFL.com.

Our View:Peppers must pony up $10,000 for the helmet-to-helmet hit. He was flagged for unnecessary roughness on the play.

Expect a good game from Julius Peppers this weekend as he squares off against the Falcons. Starting left guard, Sam Baker is expected to be out on Sunday due to a concussion, meaning Peppers will matchup with Todd Weiner.

Our View:We are still waiting Peppers to explode for his IDP owners. The DE fell off last year going from 13 sacks in 2006 to just 2.5 in 2007. We are expecting results closer to 2006 this season, but he has just one sack in three weeks. Expect him to abuse Matt Ryan every chance he gets this Sunday.

Julius Peppers has not registered a sack over the first two games of the season, but coach John Fox believes he is playing fine, according to the Charlotte Observer. Fox said, "I think Julius has played exceptionally well this year. I've said this before. Way too much is made of sacks, way too much. I don't know how else to say it. Great players make Super Bowl runs and have only two sacks. It's a team game and there's more to it than sacks."

Our View:Peppers is not helping fantasy owners with only four tackles (two solo) so far, but may register his first sack in Week 3, as he recorded three sacks in his last meeting with Minnesota in 2006.
September 20, 2008
Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers has not accumulated a sack since November 18, 2007, according to Sporting News Today.

Our View:While many say it is because Peppers faces frequent double teams and other schemes, so do other elite defensive ends, yet they still manage to get to the quarterback. Fantasy owners with him in IDP leagues should hang onto him for now, but it's hard to forget last season's 2.5 sack effort.

The Panthers are not very close to signing Peppers to a long-term deal, reports FOXSports.com.

Our View:Pepper is expected to garner at least $30 million guaranteed if and when he does sign. He is looking to rebound from a season in which he had only three sacks.

The Rock Hill Herald reports that Julius Peppers is having an incredible training camp, and looking like an elite defensive end again. During a three-snap stretch in practice, he stopped Muhammad for what would have been at least a 10-yard loss on an attempted reverse, then after a play, he bull-rushed left tackle Jordan Gross back into Jake Delhomme for what would have been a sack, but when the play continued, he faded back, and went high in the air to bat down Delhomme's pass one-handed, before heading to the sidelines laughing.

Our View:Peppers is worthy of drafting as a number one defensive lineman in IDP leagues, as he looks to bounce back from a disappointing 2007 campaign.

Pro Football Weekly reports that Julius Peppers is lighting it up in the early stages of training camp and he has impressed observers and teammates alike as he attempts to bounce back following a woeful ’07 campaign. Word is Peppers has added even more muscle to his imposing frame and has been pushing OLT Jordan Gross back with his bull rush, which is something he struggled to do in the past. Gross knows Peppers well, having practiced against him for the past five-plus years, and he has been spreading the word that his teammate is better than ever before.

Our View:Gross should be taken at his word, which has to be encouraging for the Panthers, who are relying on Peppers’ turnaround to spark the defense and return it to its playoff form from a few seasons ago. We like Peppers, 28, to return to his double-digit sack totals he has posted in four seasons from 2002-2006. Last season was an aberration as he only came up with 2.5 sacks.

The Carolina Panthers are still interested in giving Julius Peppers a big money long-term deal despite his 2.5 sack campaign a year ago, according to Pro Football Weekly. Talks will turn serious if Peppers can show up to camp in good shape.

Our View:Who knows what happened to Peppers last season, as his play declined dramatically. The Panthers seem to think that was just a hiccup and he will continue to terrorize quarterbacks. His status in IDP fantasy leagues remains high, as he has double-digit sack totals in five of previous six seasons before last year's debacle.
May 26, 2008
The Carolina Panthers and defensive end Julius Peppers are continuing to discuss long-term contract options, according to the Rock Hill Herald.

Our View:The team seems interested in locking up Peppers for the rest of his career and having their first Hall of Fame candidate insured to don a Panthers jersey for the remainder of his time in the NFL. We will update as more news becomes available.
May 25, 2008
Julius Peppers is in talks for a new long-term deal with the Panthers, according to the Rock Hill Herald. The team wants to get a deal done before Peppers becomes a free agent at the end of the 2008 season and his agent (Carl Carey said), "The organization has articulated, both to Julius and to me, that they still have full confidence in his abilities. I have 100-percent confidence that what they're saying to Julius and to me is how they really feel."

Our View:Peppers is reportedly in better shape this season, and looks to bounce back from his disappointing 2007 campaign, when he only registered three sacks.
May 3, 2008
Prolific pass rushing DE Julius Peppers may be moving from the left side of the defensive line to the right, according to CarolinaGrowl.com.

Our View:Peppers, entering the final season of his current contract, has reportedly been working out of the left side in early mini-camp sessions in place of recently retired Mike Rucker. Coach John Fox told reporters, "He might end up back on the left. I can't even answer that at this point. But we are taking a look at it because he is a natural left-hand stance guy. We'll see how that goes." Recently-added Tyler Brayton was manning the duties on the right side as Peppers filled on the left.
April 2, 2008
The Carolina Panthers continue to have conversation with defensive end Julius Peppers about a contract extension, according to the Charlotte Observer. "I love Julius Peppers," Fox said. "We want him to be with our team for years to come.” Fox refuted all the trade speculation and said that Peppers merely had a bad year - by the standards he'd set in his first four seasons. "I expect Pep to come back in a big way," Fox said. Peppers’ is entering the final year of his deal and is scheduled to count more than $15 million against the salary cap in 2008.
March 19, 2008
The Panthers sent officials to check out Florida defensive end Derrick Harvey and Boston College offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus on Tuesday. Head coach John Fox was among the crew in Florida, while general manager Marty Hurney headed up the Boston College group, the Charlotte Observer reports. Defensive end and offensive tackle top the Panthers offseason wish list. Harvey is a popular pick in mock drafts right now.

Julius Peppers was courtside when the Nuggets faced the Sonics on Sunday, according to the Rocky Mountain News. He could simply have been checking out some hoops, but since trade rumors have persisted in recent weeks, there's at least a chance he could have been in Denver to visit the Broncos. He'd have to have the Panthers' permission to do so, and their GM recently shot down such trade rumors. The Broncos finished 19th in the league in sacks last year, so they could be interested in Peppers. Of course, if anyone could use some defensive help, it was the Sonics, who got smoked for a whopping 168 points by the Nugs.
March 7, 2008
There are rumors circulating that the Carolina Panthers are shopping defensive end Julius Peppers, according to Pro Football Talk. Peppers’ agent Carl Carey has advised PFT that he and his client have heard the rumors, but that they have no merit. “We fully expect that Julius Peppers will be a Carolina Panther this football season,” Carey said. Peppers, who notched 34.5 sacks in the three previous seasons, thudded to earth in 2007 posting 38 tackles and 2.5 sacks, easily the worst performance of his six-year career. He was placed on injured reserve missing the final two games of the season due to a medial collateral sprain in his right knee. As a result, the team could attempt to restructure Peppers, who is the Panthers highest paid player next season with a base salary of $6.5 million.
