Before finalizing The Trade, Jets' GM Mike Tannenbaum asked Brett Favre for a two-year commitment, according to the New York Daily News. As we know, Favre rejected the notion and Tannenbaum did the deal regardless. "He was just trying to get me to come at first, but once we knew the deal was going to be done, he would've liked a two-year commitment," Favre revealed in his first sit-down interview with print reporters. "I said, 'Mike, let me give you the best year I can possibly give you and let's go from there.'"

Our View:Favre's year-to-year position isn't news, but this was the first acknowledgement that the Jets wanted more. At the time of the trade, Tannenbaum declined to discuss the matter. When the season is over, the Jets, too, will be held captive by Favre's whims. Tannenbaum confirmed that he asked Favre for two years, adding that he's not bothered by the non-committal stance.

Jets coach Eric Mangini said that he's leaning toward not playing quarterback Brett Favre in the team's preseason finale at Philadelphia, according to ESPN.com. "If I had to tilt one way or the other like an airplane, I'd tilt that way," Mangini said.

Our View:Favre will be ready for the regular season regardless if he plays or not.
August 26, 2008
Coach Eric Mangini said Tuesday veteran quarterback Brett Favre isn’t likely to play in the Jets’ final preseason game, according to Pro Football Talk. “It would be safe to say I’m leaning towards that,” Mangini said. “He’d love to be able to get tons of work and have all the OTAs and all that stuff. It’s just not where we are right now. The most important thing to me is us getting ready as a group and getting ready for Miami. I think the more work that he does with our guys in the group, the better. [I] really look at the last preseason game as being able to evaluate individuals as opposed to the team, and it’s really important from that perspective.”

Our View:He is a veteran and he doesn't need that final preseason game to get ready. He'll be there and going in Week 1.
August 22, 2008
Brett Favre's contract with the Jets was altered to benefit the future Hall of Famer, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Favre's new contract does not include provisions for appearances on behalf of the Jets, as well as other provisions considered standard in professional sports deals. There is reportedly no backside to the existing deal between Favre and the Jets. Favre's agent (Bus Cook) and the Jets have renegotiated the contract to consist of the identical financial terms from the Packers' contract - 12M this year, 13M next and 14M in 2010, and nothing more. The language concerning appearances for the team and recovery of bonus due to retirement is no longer part of the deal.

Our View:Favre can also retire from the Jets at any time and have no obligation to forfeit any of the bonus money he has received.
August 19, 2008
Jets quarterback Brett Favre would like for head coach Eric Mangini to shed some of the offense, making it easier for him to digest, according to the New York Post. "I had a long talk with Eric. I don't want to think, I want to react. There's got to be some middle ground there," Favre said.

Our View:Favre has had trouble because the Jets and Packers use some of the same terminology, only with different meanings. Favre is a viable option as a fantasy signal-caller, though the returns may be greater a few games into the season, when he has full grasp of the offense.
August 17, 2008
Brett Favre feels like he belongs with the Jets, according to the AP. The ex-Packer said, "It’s like starting all over again. I had some feelings that I haven’t felt in 17 years. Ten days ago, I was doing yard work. I felt like I’m a Jet, I do. Believe me, I feel very comfortable here. The guys have been great. They’ve welcomed me. I feel like I’m here for a reason. As I’ve told the guys, ‘I’m here for one reason, to help you win.’ I’ll do whatever that takes and I hope it works out."

Our View:Favre could bring the Jets stability at quarterback which the offense has been gravely lacking over the past few years, meaning he could help improve the fantasy value of his new team-mates, such as Jerricho Cotchery.
August 16, 2008
Brett Favre played the first two drives for the Jets on Saturday against the Redskins. He completed 5-of-6 passes for 48 yards and tossed a touchdown to tight end Dustin Keller.

Our View:It was an efficient opening performance for Favre, who hit four different receivers in his short time. This brief performance won't affect his fantasy value. We'll be more interesting to see how Favre looks when he gets to play a couple quarters in a row.
August 16, 2008
Quarterback Brett Favre will only play 8-12 snaps during the New York Jets preseason game against the Redskins, according to the AP.

Our View:Favre has had limited practice time, so his knowledge of the offense is not to the point where he can play much. Rest assured, he'll figure it out and be okay for fantasy owners to play during Week 1.
August 14, 2008
Brett Favre has seen fewer reps at practice due to his tired arm, according to the New York Post.

Our View:Favre is simply getting acclimated to the rigors of football once again, and a sore arm is part of that process. He should be fine for the team's preseason game.
August 13, 2008
Brett Favre admitted that his arm is feeling tired following Wednesday's practice, according to the NY Daily News. Favre said his "arm is kind of dragging a bit" and that he planned to ask coach Eric Mangini to limit his throws in the second practice session of the day. Favre went 3-for-4 in the 7-on-7 drill Wednesday, and was 9-for-16 in the 11-on-11, including one touchdown, which connected with Brad Smith for 53 yards. He also threw one interception.

Our View:Fantasy owners should not be concerned with Favre's arm unless he is unable to play in the Jets' next preseason game. Favre has been taking a lot of snaps as he learns the Jets' offense.
August 10, 2008
Brett Favre wanted to be treated like another one of the guys, and that is exactly what happened at Jets practice today. Because he fumbled during a snap exchange with center Nick Mangold, the duo had to take a lap around the field, the normal punishment doled out by Jets coach Eric Mangini for such a gaffe, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:Favre is continuing to get his body acclimated to the physical rigors of football once again, so the extra running may have done him some good.
August 9, 2008
The more he talks, the more we wonder. Today the New York media continued to send a barrage of questions towards newly-acquired quarterback Brett Favre concerning his decision to leave Green Bay and join the Jets, and his resulting comments seem to carry a certain tinge of uncertainty, according to ProFootballTalk.com. Asked about the overall emotion of the move, Favre responded, “I hope at the end of the season, I really do, that I feel like I made the right decision. I hope the Jets fans and the people throughout the NFL world feel like I made the right decision. At this point, I think it was the right decision.”

Our View:Uncertain or not, the move is made and it would be best to leave the trepidation on the table and progress forward. It may be that Favre never finds the comfort he desires in the current situation and the way it unfolded, but we seriously doubt it should be a major concern for fantasy owners. Once he hits the field and bodies start flying, the competition and love of the game will take over.
August 9, 2008
Brett Favre will make his Jets debut as the starting quarterback next Saturday when the team takes on Washington, according to the AP.

Our View:Favre better learn the system quickly. He has missed a lot of camp, obviously, and his first practice with the team was today in front of around 7,000 people.
August 8, 2008
Brett Favre apparently wanted to join Tampa Bay but with details emerging of the offer the Bucs made it is no surprise that Favre was instead sent to the Jets, according to the St. Petersberg Times.

Our View:The Bucs offered Chris Simms and a 4th round pick for Favre. However, the pick would only vest if Favre played two seasons in Tampa. If the Bucs really wanted Favre, they needed to make a better offer than that.
August 6, 2008
It never ends. With the report that the Packers and Jets have agreed on a trade sending Brett Favre to New York, Chris Mortensen is now reporting that many obstacles need to be cleared to turn this into a reality, the most daunting of which would be Brett Favre, as reported on ESPN.

Our View:Mort reports Favre is dying to get back in the league, but he had expressed strong concerns about going to New York. He wasn't excited about their team or their chances to compete, and he had pushed the Packers to trade him to Tampa Bay. Mort now believes the Packers simply ignored Favre and did what was best for them, and in fact may have intentionally designed this deal to influence Favre to once again consider retirement. He reports the Jets are likely to be on the phone right now, attempting to convince Favre to join the Jets, but in the end, the veteran passer still has the power in that he can still retire and walk away from it all. If his anger with the Packers is as strong as most reporters and friends believe it to be, that is not out of the realm of possibility. There will be more drama tomorrow, assuming this is not easily settled (and it sounds as if that is a long shot). We'll keep you posted along the way.
August 6, 2008
According to Jay Glazer, it is over. The Green Bay Packers and New York Jets have completed a trade agreement sending Brett Favre to New York, though Glazer is unsure of the exact details of the compensation coming back to Green Bay, according to FoxSports.com.

Our View:As a result of this, the Jets will likely release a quarterback. Signs have been pointing to Chad Pennington as the likely culprit because the team will need to free up cap room to fit Favre's contract under the salary cap. The Packers had been hopeful of getting a deal done with the Jets for two reasons. One, it was the better offer on the table as far as the quality of the compensation. Two, it sends Favre out of the conference, meaning a meeting in the playoffs is an extreme longshot. We will bring updated information as it comes in.
August 6, 2008
As the trade talks swirling around Brett Favre continue, a report filed via telecast on ESPN from Sal Paolantonio indicates the Green Bay Packers have been offered, contrary to reports filed by Peter King of SI.com, a conditional 4th-round pick from the New York Jets and a conditional 3rd-round pick from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for the future Hall of Famer. However, Paolantonio reports the Packers are asking the Bucs to come up with a conditional 3rd-rounder that could escalate to a 1st based on team performance as well as a player, presumably veteran quarterback Brian Griese, to get a deal done.

Our View:Back and forth... we keep getting conflicting reports on what is offered, what the Packers are seeking, and what is likely to happen. It would seem these teams are working into the night to get this done, so we hope to have it finalized soon (for the sanity of us all).
August 6, 2008
We are now receiving word that the Jets may be offering a conditional 1st-round draft pick in 2009 to the Packers in exchange for veteran passer Brett Favre , according to Peter King of SI.com.

Our View:With Favre slated to be traded to either the Jets or Buccaneers, Peter King of SI.com reports that he has heard reliably that the Jets are offering the Packers a third-round draft pick that could rise to a first-round pick depending on the team’s performance and how well Favre plays. Per King, the Buccaneers would definitely not offer that kind of a package for Favre. That meshes with the previous report from Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, who said the Jets were making the Packers a much better offer than the Buccaneers were, but that Favre hadn’t warmed up to the possibility of playing in New York.
August 6, 2008
As we continue to watch the Brett Favre situation, reports have come forth indicating Favre has confirmed that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets are the two teams attempting to trade for his services, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette. “It’s in everyone’s best interest to do it quicker than later,” Favre. “I won’t say we’re running out of time, but I need to get into a camp somewhere.”

Our View:Favre, his wife, Deanna, and his agent, Bus Cook, flew back into Pine Belt Regional Airport this afternoon after meeting for the past three days with officials from the Green Bay Packers, for whom Favre has quarterbacked the last 16 seasons. Upon arrival, he spoke with reporters and confirmed those reports when asked. He hopes to see the deal done soon ane we expect the Packers are pushing to make that a reality. As always, we will keep you posted.
August 6, 2008
It appears that Brett Favre will be traded soon, and he is expected to land with either the Bucs or the Jets, according to the Clarion-Ledger. "Brett's ready to go play," said Bus Cook, Favre's agent. "It looks like it's going to be New York or Tampa Bay. We're waiting to find out and we could learn in the next hour or so."

Our View:Reports indicate that Favre would rather play in Tampa Bay, but that New York is offering more in return for the future Hall of Famer. We'll continue to closely track this ongoing saga.
August 6, 2008
The Tampa Tribune indicates that Brett Favre could be dealt to the Buccaneers within the next 24 hours. Brian Griese could be sent to Green Bay to back up Aaron Rodgers as part of the deal.

Our View:Favre is willing to leave the Packers for the Buccaneers, and would be a significant upgrade over current starter Jeff Garcia.
August 6, 2008
Head coach Mike McCarthy made it clear during his media session on Tuesday that Brett Favre will "never appear in a Packers uniform again," writes Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com. The Packers will either trade or release the veteran quarterback.

Our View:Wasn't it just a two days ago that Favre was set to be in an open competition with Aaron Rodgers? This is the most definitive report to date that says Favre won't be wearing a Packers uniform in 2008. Of course, this won't end the media coverage about where he will end up.
August 5, 2008
Brett Favre has been placed on the Declared Non-Football Injury list due to a lower abdominal ailment, NFL.com reports. He remains on the 80-man roster but is not being paid.

Our View:This news means about as much telling you what Favre is having for dinner on Tuesday night. His situation basically remains the same.
August 5, 2008
Head coach Mike McCarthy discussed Brett Favre again after practice on Tuesday, and he informs the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the quarterback told the coach that he "wasn't in the right mindset to play (in Green Bay)." McCarthy adds that Favre does want to play. The quarterback also has a lower abdominal strain that would have kept him from practicing.

Our View:We take from the report that Favre is neither mentally nor physically ready for, at the least, work with the Packers. Does that mean he'd be more prepared to work for a different club? Are we reading too much into this? Is anyone not completely tired of this situation yet?
August 5, 2008
ESPN's Ed Werder reports that the Packers and Buccaneers are currently discussing a Brett Favre trade.

Our View:Favre has previously said he didn't want to go to Tampa Bay, but given how his situation has played out, he may end up changing his mind.
August 5, 2008
Brett Favre has left Packers camp for the day and will not attend practice today, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View:Stay tuned as the Favre saga continues to play out over the next couple days.
August 5, 2008
Although no official announcement has been made. Brett Favre is unlikely to return as a Packer following Monday night's one-on-one meeting with coach Mike McCarthy, according to FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer.

Our View:Stay tuned as the Favre saga continues to play out over the next couple days.
August 4, 2008
Adam Schefter of NFL Network indicates that the Vikings will not be punished for allegedly tampering with Packers' quarterback Brett Favre. The Packers made the tampering charge last month based on their belief that Favre had excessive communications with Vikings offensive coordinator Darell Bevell, who previously was Favre’s quarterbacks coach in Green Bay. Favre recently admitted that he talked both to Bevell and to Vikings head coach Brad Childress, but Favre denied that they enticed him to play for the Vikings.

Our View:Minnesota could have been penalized draft picks if found guilty of tampering with Favre.
August 3, 2008
Brett Favre might be back with the Packers, but according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and an unnamed source, the team contacted the Vikings as recently as Friday to let them know that Favre could still be had in a trade.

Our View:It was a record, we almost went a whole 10 hours without a Favre update. The report indicates that the Vikings would only be willing to part with a fourth of fifth round draft pick for the Packers great.
August 3, 2008
In the continued line of intrigue and suspense that has been the fight by Brett Favre to rejoin the Packers, team President and CEO Mark Murphy has announced the team will welcome Favre back and he will compete for the starting job, according to Packers.com.

Our View:It's done. To be clear, Murphy announced Favre will join the team at camp tomorrow and coach Mike McCarthy will be speaking to the team about how they will proceed at quarterback, but several sources close to Favre claim to have spoken with the veteran passer and are reporting he has been assured that he will be given every opportunity to start for the Green Bay Packers on Week 1. So there ya' have it... start drafting Favre in your fantasy leagues.
August 3, 2008
The headline hits keep coming for Brett Favre , heading back to Green Bay today with his family to face the team that no longer wants him in the fold. The latest reports indicate Favre may be making the trip with his family in an effort to advance negotiations regarding a marketing agreement that would pay Favre millions of dollars not to play are continuing, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Writes Tom Silverstein of the Journal-Sentinel: “[T]here’s some thought that Favre, who is coming to Green Bay with his agent, James (Bus) Cook, and his family, may be reporting to force the Packers to meet his financial demands. The negotiations are believed to be all about money.”

Our View:It sounds to us like Silverstein has a source with the team, and that source believes (as does the team) that Favre is bluffing. We tend to disagree and think more of the power may lie in the hands of Favre than thought. He has told local reporters that he wants to push for a deal to Minnesota and we have every reason to believe the NFL is going to encourage the Packers to make some kind of deal if Favre does in fact want to play. Right now, it appears Minnesota may be the only team offering what could be perceived as value for the passer, and thus it may be that Favre has a desire to push those efforts along more than the retirement offer to work as a marketing agent for the team (seems like he could do that over the phone, right?). We continue to keep you posted as news is released.
August 3, 2008
Future Hall of Fame passer Brett Favre has dominated on the gridirons of the NFL for many years, and now he is looking to dominate the headlines for August 3rd. We are now receiving reports that the Packers are indeed looking to ramp up their efforts to trade Favre, and it is indicated in those reports that, as part of his reinstatement from retirement, Favre will no longer carry the right to veto any trade agreement reached by the Packers, according to FoxSports.com.

Our View:Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports Favre no longer will have the power to veto any trade by refusing to seek reinstatement. Of course, if Favre doesn’t want to play for the team to which he’s traded, he can simply retire again.
August 3, 2008
Adding to the report we just filed from ESPN, confirming Brett Favre and family are on a plane headed for Green Bay, Ed Werder also reports NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has approved his request for reinstatement to the NFL, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:He's ready to play, he's on his way to Wisconsin, and his family is in tow for the Packers' Family Night event at training camp this evening. Reports had surfaced earlier in the day that stated Favre and family wouldn't be attending, but now they are confirmed in the air and on their way. It seems likely the veteran passer is going to push for resolution, be it a lucrative agreement to not play at all or a trade to another squad. We'll keep you posted as we get updates.
August 3, 2008
We have reports that Brett Favre has boarded a plane and is on his way to Green Bay, according to ESPN.

Our View:Packers quarterback Brett Favre will be leaving Mississippi in ninety minutes with his wife and children and heading to Green Bay, according to Ed Werder of ESPN. Get ready folks... we are on our way to an intriguing day in Green Bay (sorry for the annoying rhymes).
August 3, 2008
In the latest chapter of the drama that is Brett Favre and his pending return from retirement, the veteran passer has told reporters that he has every desire to play for the Minnesota Vikings and is now motivated by his wish to compete against his former employer, the Green Bay Packers, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. In a text message sent to the Journal, Favre states, "My intentions have been to play, and with Green Bay. They say no, so I still want to play in this division for obvious reasons, which I made clear to management. If they won't let me play in Green Bay, let me play against you. That's where I am."

Our View:As the world turns... and we are expecting commissioner Roger Goodell to act on this matter tomorrow. It is hard to imagine this will be resolved any time soon, but it would seem likely the NFL would encourage the Packers to do what they must to get Favre on the playing field, whether it be in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, or on the moon. Having all of the power, Packers team management (namely GM Ted Thompson) is under the gun and feeling pressures from all sides. A trade to Minnesota or Chicago would be a last-resort option, but as time moves on, it is starting to seem like a more-than-reasonable outcome. Stay tuned.
August 2, 2008
Roger Goodell will reinstate quarterback Brett Favre on Monday, giving the Packers until Tuesday to figure out what to do with him, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:Favre is still deciding whether or not he will take the Packers $25 million marketing offer. His decision will need to come soon so Green Bay knows what they are dealing with. The Brett Favre Situation continues.
August 1, 2008
The Chicago Bears are not interested in acquiring the services of Brett Favre, according to Sporting News Today. Offensive coordinator Ron Turner said he is happy with quarterbacks Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton.

Our View:Apparently Turner is seeing something that the rest of us are not. It's one thing if the Bears don't want to surrender the compensation to acquire Favre, but to say they'd rather have Grossman or Orton is lunacy.
July 31, 2008
After all of the crowing by nearly every media member about how horrible, awful and disrespectful it was for the Packers to offer Brett Favre $20 million for doing nothing, he is now seriously considering taking the deal, according to ESPN.com. Favre texted ESPN reporter Ed Werder and said in part, "Mark Murphy is at least trying. We know what they want and where I stand. His solution, although awkward and unsettling for most, may be the best in the end."

Our View:So apparently sitting around and collecting $20 million isn't the most awful proposal ever to come along. Someone should tell the talking heads at ESPN that.
July 31, 2008
The Brett Favre Situation is closer to ending. The New York Jets are in serious discussions with Favre's agent, Bus Cook, and his flight to Green Bay was cancelled, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette.

Our View:Finally, the Story That Won't Go Away may finally, thankfully, be over. Favre in New York would be interesting, to say the least, but he is undoubtedly an upgrade over noodle-armed Chad Pennington and the unproven Kellen Clemens.
July 31, 2008
The Orlando Sentinel reports that both the Buccaneers and Jets received permission to speak with Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre , but the Packers icon has declined invitations from both teams. They point out that "it's become clearer and clearer the Favre, 38, wants to play for the Minnesota Vikings, where he has an element of familiarity with Coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell."

Our View:Why is the Orlando Sentinel weighing in on Favre? They are hundreds of miles from an NFL team but somehow are the first to point out that Favre has turned down the possibilities of playing in New York or Tampa Bay. This is getting ridiculous.
July 31, 2008
ESPNews reports Brett Favre has chartered a plane to Green Bay and is a threat to join training camp this weekend.

Our View:Oh bloody hell. We will be getting news on Favre on the hour from now until Week 3. Assuming he shows up at training camp on Friday (the team is off on Thursday) expect the media to hit Green Bay's training camp like Nagasaki.
July 31, 2008
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that the Green Bay Packers have actually discussed internally the possibility of trading Brett Favre to either the Bears or Vikings "if backed into a corner by the National Football League and public sentiment."

Our View:It's hard to envision this happening. On Monday, general manager Ted Thompson said flatly that the Packers would not trade Favre within the division. Clearly they really, really like Aaron Rodgers. The Vikings would possibly become NFC favorites with such a move.
July 30, 2008
According to the most recent report, the Green Bay Packers have proposed a deal with Brett Favre , offering the future Hall of Famer $20 million over the next ten years to retire now, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View:WTMJ-TV Channel 4 in Milwaukee, citing two sources, reported Wednesday that Packers president Mark Murphy at least floated the idea to Favre of paying him a package in the neighborhood of $20 million over 10 years to remain retired. Murphy met most of Wednesday with Favre and his agent, Bus Cook, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Murphy has refused comment and will not address the report.
July 30, 2008
An NFL spokesman has stated commissioner Roger Goodell has yet to take any action on quarterback Brett Favre's request to be in reinstated from retirement, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Per the official statement, "The commissioner is taking no action today. He wants to give both the Packers and Brett an appropriate amount of time to make decisions, including decisions impacting the team's roster and salary cap. When Brett is reinstated by the commissioner, we will announce it."

Our View:It is obvious Goodell is hoping this can be resolved. Having Favre in the league is a positive, but having him embattled with the franchise that each and every fan represents with him is not. One might suggest that an attempt by the Packers to simply force Favre into retirement will be frowned upon by the NFL, but in the end, the Packers own the ultimate power by retaining Favre and keeping him in the second spot on the depth chart. As always, we'll keep you posted on news as it comes forth.
July 30, 2008
The Green Bay Press Gazette reports that Brett Favre worked out with the Oak Grove High football team Wednesday morning before hustling off at 9:50 am to a scheduled meeting with Packers’ President and CEO Mark Murphy. Murphy flew into Hattiesburg late Tuesday night for discussions aimed at keeping Favre out of the Packers’ training camp until the sticky situation can be resolved. When approached after the workout, Favre told reporters, “I’m late for a 9 o’clock meeting and I’m not lying.”

Our View:Brett, your meeting was nearly an hour ago and your just now leaving a high school team's practice?!? Do you really even want to play this season? Unless a sweet deal comes through for Green Bay, this thing has a good chance of getting messier before showing signs of resolution. On the other hand, how sweet would it be to be on the Oak Grove High football team this morning?
July 29, 2008
The President of the Green Bay Packers, Mark Murphy, flew to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to meet with Brett Favre and try to resolve the situation, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View:Murphy traveled to Mississippi alone, and he will try to work things out one way or another with Favre. The situation has come to a head, so expect a resolution by the end of the week.
July 29, 2008
Brett Favre has backed the Green Bay Packers into a corner, because he has made it official and faxed his signed reinstatement letter to the NFL, according to ESPN.com. The Packers now have 24 hours to decide whether or not to keep him on the roster, trade him or release him outright.

Our View:The Packers now have a huge decision to make in one day, or Favre will be strolling into Packers camp ... as the backup.
July 29, 2008
ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre has finally filed reinstatement papers with the NFL. He has held off reporting to camp to give the Packers a few days to find a trade partner.

Our View:If the Pack don't deal the future Hall of Famer in the next couple days, expect Favre to report and make it awkward for everyone involved. We'll continue to monitor this situation closely.
July 29, 2008
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers have been calling all over the National Football League trying to acquire something of value in return for Brett Favre, whom they no longer want. But a source close to the trade process said the team had nothing even close to an offer it would consider for the Hall of Fame quarterback. After a pair of 45-minute telephone conversations with GM Ted Thompson on Saturday, Favre agreed to delay for several days the possibility that he will report to training camp. The first step must be for Favre to undertake the formality of seeking approval of his request for reinstatement by Commissioner Roger Goodell, but Favre didn't do it Monday.

Our View:The Packers clearly want to get something prominent in return for their franchise cornerstone. If not, they may actually bring him into camp as Rodgers' backup and go from there. However, Favre's basic message to Thompson for some time now is a request for his outright release. The Packers have been convinced that always has been the strategy of Favre and his agent, James "Bus" Cook. If there ever was a chance that the Packers would just give Favre his freedom, it might have dissipated in the last week. First, Favre went on TV and essentially called Thompson a liar. Second, Favre gave interviews to two journalists in which he revealed intimate details of his talks with Thompson.
July 27, 2008
ESPN.com reports that Brett Favre has signed his reinstatement papers, so, yes, it appears Favre will be eligible to play somewhere this season. For now he is avoiding Packers camp and hoping he will still get traded.

Our View:Favre's effectiveness will depend entirely on where he ends up. Most importantly, he needs a solid offensive line that can keep him off of his back. Favre is the type of player that is at his best with teams that are competing for Super Bowls.
July 27, 2008
Brett Favre said he will stay away from Packers' camp, for now, according to the AP. GM Ted Thompson has asked Favre to stay away for a couple of days to resolve the situation, and Favre agreed to do so. Favre said, "I don’t want to be a distraction to the Packers, and I hope in the next few days we can come to an agreement that would allow me to continue playing football."

Our View:The agreement is presumed to be a trade, with the top suitors being the Jets and Buccaneers.
July 26, 2008
Updating the latest in what seems like hourly news on Brett Favre, the New York Jets now seem like an unlikely landing spot for the quarterback, as team officials deemed the possibility of trading for him, "very remote", according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Our View:Favre would have been a pretty good fit in New York, despite the fact he would have received even more media attention than he ever has. New York must still decide between Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington at QB.
July 26, 2008
Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy says he has no idea how or where the Brett Favre saga to unretire will come to fruition, but he does know this: Aaron Rodgers is his starting quarterback, according to SLAM Sports.

Our View:McCarthy acknowledged the possibility that Favre, who is having serious second thoughts about his football future, could report to training camp with the rest of the team and even be in uniform for their first practice Monday morning. But he'll have to file for reinstatement with the league first, then pass a physical. The team has been more than honest in letting Favre know he is in line to enter as the QB2, but you better believe Favre knows what he is doing. If he does in fact file for reinstatement and join training camp with the Packers, and if he is retained in the QB2 spot entering the season, it is rather difficult to imagine how the local fans will respond the first time Rodgers goes three-and-out. It's a story that just won't die, and it seems we have a long road ahead to reach the end. Stay tuned.

Updating the latest in the Brett Favre saga, the Jets appear to be actively seeking a path towards bringing the future Hall of Famer to New York, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:According to the News, the Jets and Packers have held preliminary trade talks to discuss draft pick compensation and Favre's contract status, according to unnamed sources close to the situation. The same source reports the Packers have urged the Jets to call Favre and gauge his interest in coming to New York as well, yet the Jets have not made that call as of Friday evening. As always, we'll keep you posted as news comes forth.
July 25, 2008
ESPN reports that the Jets have been granted permission by the Packers to speak to Brett Favre.

Our View:Favre would have no problem beating out Kellen Clemens or Chad Pennington for the starting quarterback job with the Jets. If he ultimately lands with the AFC East club, the fantasy value of Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery would rise. Coles will see more deep passes (effectively) directed his way, and Cotchery could potentially challenge 100 receptions, as the Jets' aerial attack would be more consistent.
July 25, 2008
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Brett Favre plans to show up for training camp, as posted on ProFootballTalk.com. Schefter noted that all indications are that Favre is returning with the intention of spending the season with Green Bay.

Our View:In order to participate, he would need to apply for reinstatement, via a letter that could be sent to Commissioner Roger Goodell as soon as today.
July 24, 2008
Yahoo Sports indicates that the Packers are nearing a deal for Brett Favre.

Our View:A basic agreement has been reached, with the Packers coming up with a list of teams willing to trade for Favre, then presenting him with the list to find out where Favre would prefer to play.
July 23, 2008
Turning the attention to the field of play, reports now indicate veteran passer Brett Favre is expected to make an official decision about his status for 2008 before the end of the week, possibly as early as Thursday, according to Adam Schefter of NFL.com.

Our View:Favre has yet to put forth an official letter of request for reinstatement to the NFL league office, and there are still many who believe he will remain retired. Schefter reports Favre will make that decision by the end of this week. He also reports the Packers are growing increasingly concerned with the options in the trade market. Schefter reports the Packers have spoken with 20 teams with which they would consider making a deal for Favre, the bulk of which claim they have absolutely no interest. That leaves a list of less-than-desirable partners to negotiate a trade with, and that adds to the intrigue of the scenario. Stay tuned.
July 23, 2008
As the flurry surrounding Brett Favre , his use of a team-provided cell phone, potential salary-cap infractions, and his potential return to the NFL continues to swirl, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has told reporters that he has spoken with management for the Packers and is "closely monitoring the situation," according to the Associated Press.

Our View:ESPN.com first reported Goodell's interest in the Favre predicament, indicating that Goodell encouraged Packers general manager Ted Thompson to survey teams around the league to try to find a trade partner in hopes of resolving it quickly. NFL.com reported Tuesday that the Packers had spoken to several teams to gauge their interest in a trade for Favre. Goodell has more than a few interests of need in tracking the situation. Accusations (and the pending investigation) against the Minnesota Vikings of tampering, attempting to talk with Favre while his rights were still retained by the Packers, is priority #1, but the desire to move past this ugly chapter of the offseason is likely to be a concern for Goodell as well. Getting the tampering scandal under wraps, insuring the Packers have or have not violated salary cap restrictions and the investigation sure to follow on those charges, giving Favre an avenue to return despite Green Bay's desire to hold him out... that's a full plate.
July 22, 2008
This has become the time of Brett Favre off the field as the headlines and rumors continue to swirl around him. Tampa Bay, believed to be the top suitor for the veteran passer in potential trade talks with the Packers, has been asked for official comment, questions that have brought answers that further add to the intrigue of the situation, according to ProFootballTalk.com. Bucs G.M. Bruce Allen was asked about the possibility of pursuing Favre on a local radio show, calling any such talk “hypothetical.”

Our View:If the Packers and the Bucs have spoken, Allen couldn’t have disclosed the existence of those talks without risking a tampering violation. Still, the answers seem to push the thought that there are hopes of getting this done, and it might be best to protect those efforts by saying nothing. The general concensus has listed the Bucs as the most likely spot for Favre to land despite a roster bloated with passers. Their love of veteran commodities and an even-larger love of quarterbacks has Tampa Bay squarely in the light of this saga, so comments like this only add to the fire. Stay tuned.
July 22, 2008
The story continues to grow as reports of cellphone usage and records by Brett Favre hit the headlines. League sources have indicate the fact that Favre was using a team-issued cell phone at any time during his career with the Packers would be a violation of the salary cap rules, unless the value of the phone was included within Favre’s total cap number, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:The use of the phone is not an issue after Favre's retirement, working in whatever capacity he was for the team and no longer earning roster dollars to count against the cap. However, if Favre was using the phone during his career, the NFL may seek to penalize the team for violating the league's salary cap.
July 22, 2008
The Green Bay Packers are reportedly in possession of cell phone records that show passer Brett Favre has had multiple phone conversations with Minnesota HC Brad Childress and OC Darrell Bevell, supporting claims of illegale tampering, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Our View:Source state Favre had continued to use a Packers-issued cell phone and that when the team checked the phone records it found repeated calls to Childress and Bevell. The possibility of Favre having used a phone issued by the Packers had been speculated on last week after the Associated Press reported that Green Bay informed the NFL it felt “an investigation of the phone records would show more than ‘normal contact’ between the Vikings and Favre, even before he formally asked for his release to play for another team.” The league continues to investigate, and the Vikings, if found guilty, could face penalties that include loss of draft picks and/or fines.
July 22, 2008
The Packers have spoken to multiple teams about what they might be willing to offer for Brett Favre, NFL.com reports. At least one of the contacts is an NFC club.

Our View:The going rate for a Pro Bowl player appears to be a second-round and a fifth or sixth-round pick. This report doesn't mean a deal is imminent regarding Favre.
July 21, 2008
Brett Favre has abandoned his attempt to return to the NFL, an unconfirmed source informs Pro Football Talk. The Packers reportedly offered three potential teams they'd be willing to trade Favre to, and the quarterback turned down all three options.

Our View:One, it sounds like PFT isn't very secure on their source. Two, Favre could change his mind three times by the time we're done with this sentence.
July 19, 2008
In town to present former teammate Frank Winters for induction into the Packers' Hall of Fame, Brett Favre didn't comment on his rift with Packers' management, according to the AP. "That's the thing about Green Bay," said Favre, who spoke for about three minutes before stepping off the stage and ducking out a side door. "It's a special place. There's a lot of tradition. You think of the Packers, you think of all these great names, and to be a part of that -- and I know Frank feels honored -- is a special thing. I'm thankful that he asked me to be here."

Our View:We didn't really anticipate Brett addressing his status, as he didn't want to cause any tension during Winters' special day.
July 18, 2008
The Vikings are remaining silent on the tampering charge against them involving Brett Favre, according to the Star Tribune. A team spokesman said, "We are not commenting on the issue. These types of matters are handled by the league."

Our View:If found guilty of having "inappropriate dialogue" with Favre, the Vikings could face penalties that include the loss of draft picks and/or fines.
July 16, 2008
In the never ending saga of Brett Favre, the latest report is that the Packers have accused the Vikings of tampering with Favre, according to Fox Sports. The Vikings deny the charges which stem from a conversation the Vikings OC Darrell Bevell, a former assistant with the Packers, and Favre had.

Our View:The Packers have filed a formal charge with the league, and the Vikings are waiting on the league to call on them to give the organization a chance to respond to the charge.
July 16, 2008
ESPN.com reports that "If Brett Favre is really going to force a showdown with the Green Bay Packers, it won't happen right away, his agent told Chris Mortensen." In the report Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, said we [he and Farve] have until Week 6 to file for reinstatement, and that Favre will not play backup in Green Bay.

Our View:The news just keeps pouring in, and the situation changes like the weather here in Missouri.. every 10 minutes.
July 16, 2008
According to the Tampa Tribune, the latest news on the Brett Favre front is that the Bucs are courting the retired quarterback and that general manager Bruce Allen recently dined with Favre. "I think the people at Fleming's can tell you that's absolutely not true,'' Allen told The Tampa Tribune on Tuesday.

Our View:Talk of Favre playing for the Bucs has been prevalent for days, but Favre said himself during an interview broadcast on Fox News on Monday that he sees a trade being a "way-out-there possibility.''
July 16, 2008
Brett Favre is expected to petition NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for reinstatement to the Packers' roster soon, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. He is on the Packers' reserve/retired list, and by NFL rules, has to ask the commissioner in writing for reinstatement to the team.

Our View:If Favre petitions and receives reinstatement, the Packers would have to add him to the 80-man roster or release him. GM Ted Thompson has said he's already ruled out releasing Favre, so the presumption is that he'd put Favre on the roster and try to trade him.
July 15, 2008
In the second part of his interview with Fox News that airs tonight, Brett Favre says he is thinking about showing up to Packers training camp in order to call their "bluff," according to ESPN.com.

Our View:This is getting uglier every day, and none of this is making Favre or the Packers look particularly good. There will undoubtedly be more later.
July 15, 2008
Brett Favre is planning to play in 2008 and no longer feels welcome in Green Bay. But if he is able to gain his release or be traded from Green Bay, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may not be very high on Favre's list of new teams, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Favre has recently told sources close to him that Tampa Bay was '”too hot” and that he prefers to play and practice in cooler weather. The Jets and Ravens have already denied interest in his services, but Miami, Chicago and Minnesota have been mentioned as possible landing spots. Stay tuned.
July 14, 2008
Updating previous reports, the Fox News segment has aired, and Brett Favre has told his side of the story, the Green Bay Press Gazette reports. "I was not totally ready to commit," Favre says of his March 3 press conference. "(I) sort of left the door open. But they wanted an answer, and am I mad at them for that? No. And I think that’s what needs to be cleared up, is that, hey, you wanted an answer? I gave you the honest answer at that time." He explains that he wanted to wait until training camp to make a decision. Favre adds, "I was told that playing in Green Bay was not an option." He has not signed his retirement papers and has asked to be released. "Apparently now, they want to protect my legacy by bringing me back and having me be a backup. Boy, that, that is really good," Favre concludes.

Our View:We're excited for another couple weeks of he said/they said between Favre and the Packers. It sounds like Aaron Rodgers will be under center for the Pack come Week 1, and Favre will have to find work elsewhere.
July 14, 2008
Brett Favre was interviewed by Greta Van Susteren of Fox News on Monday, and the exchange will air on Monday night. Among the details already leaked, Favre says he doesn't want to be a backup to Aaron Rodgers and that he felt pressured to make a decision about his retirement, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.

Our View:The saga continues. Fantasy leaguers can only sit back and wait to see what happens in the coming weeks. It seems more and more likely that Favre will indeed return, but probably not for the Packers.
July 13, 2008
More Favre: the New York Jets say they will not pursue the services of quarterback Brett Favre, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:Chad Pennington's arm is such that he has trouble throwing the ball 20 yards in the air, and Kellen Clemens has yet to prove he belongs as a starting quarterback in the NFL, so the Jets seem like a decent option. Alas, Favre will have to turn elsewhere.
July 12, 2008
The headlines just keep coming on embattled passer Brett Favre , the latest reportingt Favre and his agent are putting full focus on enticing the Miami Dolphins and Carolina Panthers into making potential offers to obtain his services, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Our View:A client of James "Bus" Cook, Favre's agent, recently told a friend that Miami and Carolina were the teams that were Favre's most likely landing place, and probably the only way he would know that is if discussions had already taken place with those teams. If Favre submits his reinstatement letter to the NFL office, the Packers will begin offering him up for a trade. It's possible they'll give Cook permission to negotiate with other teams, but Thompson will put his top two lieutenants, directors of football operations Reggie McKenzie and John Schneider, on the case and tell them to find the best deal possible. We'll continue to bring updates as they become available.
July 12, 2008
The ongoing saga of the not-so-retired savior of Green Bay continues to come forth, the latest report stating the Packers have informed Brett Favre that he will not be granted his unconditional release and is more than welcome to return to the Packers... as the team's backup quarterback, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:Clearly the team has no desire to see their future Hall of Fame representative end his career with division rival Minnesota or Chicago, thus the desire to deny (at least in initial reactions) his request for release without condition only makes sense. However, the invite to return as the team's backup is clearly a statement designed to display a hard-nosed stance that the Packers will be sticking to their guns and retaining Favre's rights. Of course, everything has a price, but the tag to make a deal for Favre right now is likely to be rather steep. We'll keep you posted as this saga progresses.
July 12, 2008
Sources close to Brett Favre believe that the future Hall of Famer will not be released by the Packers under any circumstance, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View:A trade is still possible, but if a deal is not worked out the club will have to decide what to do with Favre. The team won't release him, namely in fear he would be scooped up by a rival that needs a strong quarterback, like Minnesota.
July 11, 2008
Green and Gold insider Mike Clemens is reporting the Minnesota Vikings have already inquired about signing quarterback Brett Favre, pending his release from the Green Bay Packers, according to Green Bay 1250 WSSP.

Our View:There are rumors that Favre wanted to return to the Packers in March, but was told that he would be Aaron Rodgers' backup. As a result, he now wants out of Green Bay.
July 11, 2008
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that sources near the situation have said that the Favre and his agent, James "Bus" Cook, may already have a team picked out with Miami and Carolina the rumored targets.

Our View:Sources close to the situation say that under no circumstances will the Packers release Favre from his contract. Trade him, possibly, but release him, never. This could set up a Jason Taylor for Favre trade in the near future.
July 11, 2008
The following statement has been released on Packers.com: The Green Bay Packers are aware of the latest developments regarding Brett Favre, who earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms. We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion. Brett's press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement. The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team. As a retired player, Brett has the option to apply for reinstatement with Commissioner Goodell. If that were to occur, he would become an active member of the Green Bay Packers. As always, the Packers will do what's right and in the best interest of the team.

Our View:The Packers front office has to be very careful with how they handle this situation, because it’s a public relations nightmare waiting to happen. They are saying the right things in this statement. It will be very interesting to see how all this plays out in the next couple of weeks before training camp. For the record, the Packers veterans report to training camp on July 27. Stay tuned.
July 11, 2008
Three days after a conference call with Green Bay team officials in which quarterback Brett Favre emphatically expressed his desire to play in 2008, Favre has formally asked for his contractual release from the Packers, according to ESPN.

Our View:The letter was sent by Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, via overnight mail on Thursday and arrived at the Packers facility Friday morning. Cook, on behalf of Favre, expressed a desire to have an amicable parting, as the Packers have been reluctant to embrace his return. Stay tuned, this situation is about to get juicy.
July 11, 2008
Chris Mortensen is reporting on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” that quarterback Brett Favre has sent the Green Bay Packers a letter requesting his unconditional release.

Our View:We will be updating this story as more information becomes available, but it appears that Favre is serious about playing football in 2008.
July 11, 2008
Pat Kirwan of NFL.com states that he feels there is about an 80% chance Brett Favre returns to the league this season. Kirwan noted that he talked to a few sources close to Favre, and added, "He’s throwing footballs, working out and it’s more than an itch to play."

Our View:So it appears there is a good chance he will return to the league, but now the big question is where.
July 9, 2008
According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, team president and CEO Mark Murphy believes that Brett Favre will remain retired, rather than come back for an 18th season in the NFL.

Our View:Every major media outlet in the free world, including ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported last week that Favre had communicated his potential desire to return to coach Mike McCarthy, but with the head coach on vacation everything that pertains to the return of Favre remains in limbo.
July 9, 2008
Packers' president and CEO Mark Murphy commented on Brett Favre, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Murphy said, "It's a very delicate situation, because he has such a special place in Packers history. No player leaves the game gracefully." Chairman Bob Harlan added, "What I remember about him is he was ready to retire, and that's how I feel today. I think down deep, that's exactly how he feels." James Jones also remarked, "I don't think he's coming back. Aaron Rodgers is the guy, OK? It was great playing with Brett Favre. He got out at a great time, he had a great career, and it's Aaron Rodgers' time now."

Our View:Favre is yet to make an official statement regarding his plans to return to the NFL, but it is clear the team had already planned to move on without him.
July 7, 2008
Peter King of SI stated that Brett Favre wants to play football again, but the Packers do not want him to. Favre has reportedly told coach Mike McCarthy that he wants to return. King also expects Favre's agent to send a letter to the Packers within the next 10 days, indicating that Favre wants to be taken off the NFL's reserve/retired list. At that time, the team will have no choice but to re-admit Favre back to football.

Our View:The Packers can take Favre and his $12.8-million cap number back onto the club and give him his starting role back, or they can trade him, or they release him.
July 6, 2008
There has been a rumor swirling that Brett Favre wants to play for the Panthers, but GM Marty Hurney said, "I don't know where these things come from," according to the Charlotte Observer.

Our View:Jake Delhomme is coming off elbow surgery, but has looked solid so far in the off-season, and the Panthers are content with Matt Moore as the top backup.
July 3, 2008
What would the NFL Sunday Soap Opera be without some offseason/pre-training camp noise? PackerNews.com is reporting that talk of a possible return by Brett Favre continued to dominate the news in Green Bay. The report notes that the Packers haven’t changed their response to Wednesday’s revelation Favre may want to unretire.

Our View:The Green Bay Press-Gazette has been reporting for several months that Favre had been having second thoughts to retiring. Wednesday’s story, which was first reported by ESPN, suggests that Favre called McCarthy and expressed a desire to play for the Packers in 2008. All indications are the organization would rather see Favre stay retired which would open the door for the quarterback to play for an organization other than Green Bay. No matter what happens, Favre has opened Pandora's box, and it is a lose-lose situation for the Packers front office. They allow Farve to return and noise will be make about the "future", release him and let him play a year with another team and locals claim blasphemy.
July 3, 2008
Brett Favre's agent, Bus Cook, has been privately saying his client wants to play for the Carolina Panthers, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:The Favre saga gets weirder and weirder. Jake Delhomme is the starter in Carolina for the time being, and there is no word on if the Panthers would be interested in Favre.
July 2, 2008
No sooner do we speculate on when Brett Favre's potential comments about the news of today, stating he was seeking a team to join for a return to the NFL, then ESPN reports Favre has contacted them and is stating he has no interest in returning to the game.

Our View:ESPN is filing the report on television as we speak, and we anticipate more of the story is still to come. Simply stated, Chris Mortenson is reporting he has received a text message from Favre that states, "I'm not coming back." We'll keep you posted.
July 2, 2008
In a string of reports we have brought forth concerning a potential return for veteran passer Brett Favre , we are now hearing reports that Favre has in fact requested his release from the Green Bay Packers, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

Our View:The Journal states Favre made this request within the last few weeks, noting either Favre or his agent, Bus Cook, reportedly contacted the Packers to inform them of his intent to play again. When the Packers said they've moved on, Favre demanded to be released. The Packers said no. The folks on NFL Network are dedicating discussions to potential landing spots for the future Hall of Famer, including the Jets, Chiefs, and Baltimore. The flurry of speculation appears to have legs for it has become the hot topic of the day and it would seem just a matter of time before Favre and/or Cook comment on the subject to reporters. We'll keep you posted.
July 2, 2008
ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre said the talk of him coming out of retirement is "all rumor". Chris Mortenson reported earlier today that Favre has the "itch" to return to the gridiron.

Our View:Who knows what Brett is really thinking right now. He probably doesn't even know. We'll continue to update his situation.
July 2, 2008
ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre has an "itch" to report to Packers training camp and play one more season. The report notes that Favre spoke with head coach Mike McCarthy but talks are in the preliminary stages. According to an unnamed source the team is hesitant to bring the veteran back into the fold because "Brett retired for the right reasons, even though I know his family is tugging on him [to play]." James Cook, Favre's agent said "As far as I know, right now, Brett Favre is retired."

Our View:Chris Mortensen reported that a second source conceded Favre was "getting the itch" to play football this year, as well. Any continued rumor or speculation about Favre's return will result in plenty of fantasy owners using a late round pick on the future Hall of Fame quarterback. It will also result in Greg Jennings and Donald Driver having added value, on speculation alone.
June 30, 2008
Brett Favre may want to play in the upcoming season, or so his agent, Bus Cook, has been saying privately, according to Pro Football Talk.

Our View:Here we go again. Until Favre actually comes out and signs a contract, or publicly states he wants to come back, this is much ado about nothing.
May 17, 2008
Colts' quarterback Peyton Manning is not sure Brett Favre has hung up his cleats for good, according to ProFootballTalk.com. Manning recently explained that he usually writes a letter to players who have retired. Manning says he has yet to pen a letter to Favre. Manning doesn’t have any inside information, he’s just taking the same wait-and-see approach that the rest of us have employed, given Favre’s equivocation on the subject in a handful of interviews since he announced his decision to retire. Manning said, "Like everybody else, I guess we'll see what happens this fall. In a lot of ways I kind of hope he returns. Brett's a guy that's been such an influence on me and all young quarterbacks. I guess part of it is kind of hope, maybe, that he finds his way back in the NFL this year."

Our View:Manning still writes letters. Hasn't he heard of email?
May 6, 2008
David Witthoft finally shunned his Brett Favre jersey for a red shirt for the first time in 1,581 days, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The 12-year-old Ridgefield, Connecticut boy wore the No. 4 jersey every day since receiving it as a Christmas gift in 2003.

Our View:David's father, Chuck Witthoft, said that his son's last day wearing the jersey was April 23 on his 12th birthday. Witthoft conceded his son started to become concerned about his appearance after the jersey barely came down to his belt line.
April 24, 2008
Brett Favre continues to run his mouth and say things that are in opposition to his stated goal of retiring, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Favre taped a segment on the Late Show with David Letterman, and here is part of what he said. "I think when training camp gets close, I will - something's bound to happen." Letterman asked him what he meant and Favre replied by saying, "Butterflies, or - I don't know, something's bound to happen."

Our View:Are you as sick of this already as we are? We will keep reporting all the non-sense surrounding this situation, but the team certainly can't be happy with not being sure of which direction they will move in this season with Favre sending mixed signals on a weekly basis.
April 24, 2008
It took him 11 years, but Brett Favre is finally getting around to sitting back down with David Letterman, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The former Green Bay Packers quarterback will be on tonight's "Late Show with David Letterman'' at 10:35 p.m. on CBS.

Our View:Favre made his first appearance on the show Feb. 7, 1997, after the Packers won Super Bowl XXXI.
April 8, 2008
Brett Favre has denied reports that he's considering a comeback, but when asked if he might return to the Packers if they needed him because of injury, he sounded like it could be possible. "It would be hard to pass up, I guess," Favre told the Sun-Herald. "But three months from now, say that presents itself, I may say, you know what, I'm so glad I made that decision. I'm feel very comfortable in what I'm doing and my decision. Yeah, I can probably be up there doing that and playing, but again, I don't know. It's only speculating." We don't expect to see Brett at all this year, but crazier things have happened.
April 4, 2008
Brett Favre, startled this morning to see the enormity of a report on a morning sports show that he might play football again, said he is not considering coming out of retirement, according to SI.com. "That's the last thing I'm thinking about,'' Favre told SI.com. "I have no idea where that came from, but it certainly didn't come from me. I'm happy about my decision and I haven't once said, 'I wonder if I made the wrong decision.' I know it's the right one.'' Ninety-nine percent of what he said in a 20-minute conversation was very much about football being in the rearview mirror. And he certainly would not want the Packers or any other team to line up, hoping he'd change his mind in August and come in to save a sorry quarterback situation.
April 4, 2008
General manager Ted Thompson is laughing off a published report that Brett Favre is considering a comeback with a team other than the Green Bay Packers, according to NFL.com. "We don't know anything about it, and it's inconceivable," Thompson said. The Los Angeles Times, citing anonymous sources, reported on its Web site Thursday that a representative of Favre has "quietly inquired" with other teams about their interest in trading for him. Either way, Favre's rights still belong to the Packers, and he would have to be traded or released if he wanted to play for another team. And for now, that doesn't appear to be the case.
April 3, 2008
Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre, who announced his retirement last month after 17 seasons, could be weighing a comeback with another team, according to the Los Angeles Times. Favre, 38, has yet to give written notice of his retirement to the league or the players' union, although that's neither required nor irrevocable. It's also not uncommon for players to delay in doing so, particularly if they are not in immediate need of their pension money. Reached today, agent James "Bus" Cook said he was not aware of Favre's interest in resuming his career. "That's news to me," Cook said. "I don't think that has anything to do with anything. He's retired, period, point blank." In other news, we saw Elvis at the neighborhood convenience store.
March 25, 2008
Brett Favre has not yet filed his official retirement papers, and it's unclear when he will, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. His agent, James "Bus" Cook, said he had no idea where Favre was in the process of filing the paperwork that would finalize his retirement. When it does become official, the Packers will clear $11.4 million in salary cap space. Until Favre officially files the paperwork, there will be speculation that he could return.
March 19, 2008
Mark Murphy, president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers, said that the Packers plan on retiring Brett Favre's number sometime this coming season, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Murphy said he had had a preliminary discussion with Favre, and that both Favre and the organization agreed that his No. 4 would be retired in 2008. "Our plan and his is to retire his number sometime this season. And we will make a decision after the schedule comes out," Murphy said. These plans are in the “preliminary” stages, but if the organization retires his number during a game, it will obviously be a hot ticket.
March 7, 2008
General manager Ted Thompson didn’t try to talk quarterback Brett Favre out of retiring, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. The report cites league sources that say Thompson will never admit it, but he was ready to move on without the 38-year old future Hall of Famer because he faded down the stretch over the past three seasons. In 2007, Favre posted a 101.5 QB Rating in the Packers' first 11 games and 82.1 in the last seven. In 2006, he had an 81.3 QB Rating in the first nine games and 61.0 in the last seven, and finally in 2005, Favre had a 93.1 QB Rating in the first six games falling to 58.0 in the last 10 games of the season.

ESPN.com reporter Chris Mortensen said that he received a voice message from quarterback Brett Favre explaining that his decision to retire was based on his unwillingness to prepare for a season that he couldn't be assured would end in a Super Bowl victory, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette. "I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired," Favre said. "I know it shouldn't feel unsuccessful, but the only way to come back and make that be the right decision would be to come back and win a Super Bowl and honestly the odds of that, they're tough. Those are big shoes for me to fill, and I guess it was a challenge I wasn't up for. " This latest update makes Lord Favre's retirement seem like more of a reality.

Brett Favre’s agent, James (Bus) Cook, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this morning that he believes Favre wants to play another year and didn't get the sense that the Packers wanted him back all that badly. "It's my opinion," Cook said of the Packers' lack of interest. "I know he wants to play one more year. I do not know much conversation there was (between Favre and the Packers) and I don't think anyone forced him to make that decision. But I don't know that anyone tried to talk him out of it." Cook said that Favre feels physically and mentally capable of playing at least one more year. "I think he wanted to play," Cook said. " I think he's still got it. He knows he's still got it. I think he felt he could play one more year. I don't know if they told him they really wanted him to play. That's just the feeling I got." There are already conspiracy theories developing that Favre could still choose to play in 2008, and we have a feeling this story is far from over.

The Green Bay Packers officially announced quarterback Brett Favre's retirement, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The following statement was issued by general manager Ted Thompson: "Brett Favre has informed us of his intention to retire from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL. He has had one of the greatest careers in the history of the National Football League, and he is able to walk away from the game on his own terms – not many players are able to do that. "The Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. He has given Packers fans 16 years of wonderful memories, a Super Bowl championship among them, that will live on forever. Brett’s many accomplishments on the field are legendary. He leaves the game holding virtually every career passing record, plus his consecutive starts streak, which may never be duplicated. "The uniqueness of Brett Favre – his personality, charisma and love of the game – undoubtedly will leave him as one of the enduring figures in NFL history."

Brett Favre has decided to call it quits, according to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer. The future Hall of Famer apparently informed the Packers of his decision within the last few days, though it's unclear when he and the team will announce the decision publicly. Favre is coming off a terrific year, having thrown for 4,157 yards and 28 TDs, but at 38, he's apparently decided to move on. Unless the Cheeseheads go out and acquire a quarterback, Aaron Rodgers will take over under center.

There was a link posted briefly to the Green Bay Packers’ website leading to a page that declared quarterback Brett Favre was retiring, which is erroneous information, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Per agent James “Bus” Cook, Favre has not made a decision on his future yet. Cook said he was aware there was something posted briefly on the Packers' website about Favre retiring, but he said it was not accurate. He said he hasn't talked to Favre about his plans for next season and figures the quarterback will call him when he has made his decision. Bottom line… the page exists on the website because it has to prepare in advance in case Favre does decide to retire.
