Player Notes
August 25, 2008
Chad Pennington has been named the Dolphins' starting quarterback for Week 1, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:Pennington should remain a conservative passer for the run-oriented Dolphins, especially since they lack a true No. 1 receiver. He is only worth drafting as a low-end No. 3 quarterback.
August 23, 2008
Chad Pennington completed 11-of-15 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown Saturday in the win over Kansas City.

Our View:This was typical Chad, dinking and dunking his way down the field. He has really upgraded the Fins' passing attack.
August 16, 2008
Chad Pennington made his debut with the Dolphins on Saturday night and completed 5-of-6 passes for 55 yards over three drives. The Dolphins scored a touchdown on the second possession and a field goal on their third drive. Pennington also rushed twice for 18 yards.

Our View:That's the efficient Pennington that the Dolphins are probably hoping to see all season. He isn't dynamic, but it's tough to argue with 10 points over three drives. It was nice to see Chad hit Ted Ginn twice for 39 yards.
August 13, 2008
Chad Pennington's two-year deal with the Dolphins is worth $7.9 million, according to ProFootballTalkc.com. He will make $4 million in 2008. It’s a $2 million reduction in what he was due to earn from the Jets.

Our View:If the Dolphins find a better option to start in 2009, they could release Pennington next spring.
August 12, 2008
The evidence that Chad Pennington is in fact the starting quarterback for the Dolphins continues to show itself during team practices. John Beck and Josh McCown continue to be bystanders during practice, according to the Orlando Sun-Sentinal. "What I have seen is, I've seen between spring and now, about over 500 throws," Tony Sparano told the paper. "I've seen an awful lot of them. I'm starting to get a pretty good picture one way or the other. I need to see, certainly more Chad Pennington."

Our View:Sparano seems to be playing off Pennington's current status. Coaches in the league knows what they have with Pennington, and a team isn't going to sit their starter on the sidelines during the heat of training camp to evaluate a backup. Pennington is the 'Phins starter Week 1 barring an injury.
August 11, 2008
Chad Pennington has been listed as the Dolphins starter at quarterback ahead of Josh McCown, John Beck and Chad Henne, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Our View:The report said the reason for the order was "seniority", but common sense tells us all that Pennington will likely open up the season as the team's starter.
August 10, 2008
Chad Pennington may not be the starting quarterback for the Dolphins, and he'll have to compete for the starting job, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "Chad is going to be competing. He knows that," said Dolphins coach Tony Sparano.

Our View:In all likelihood, Pennington is going to be the man behind center, but he is a few weeks behind, and coaches love the competition angle. Either way, he's an iffy fantasy prospect.
August 10, 2008
Chad Pennington commented on his mechanics for the new season, according to the Miami Herald. He said, "I spent a lot of time this offseason really taking a look at the criticisms of me as a professional and seeing what I can do in bettering myself. One thing I tried to do was totally change my mechanics. I wanted to create the consistency on the down-the-field throws and velocity on the ball. It's never been a question on the velocity, but the consistency is where the criticisms always come from. It's a work in progress, but I found some really good results in training camp up to this point."

Our View:Pennington will be a sizable upgrade at the position for Miami, but his fantasy value could be hindered by a lack of a strong receiving corps and an unstable offensive line.
August 9, 2008
To cover our bases, we have learned the terms of the new contract signed by Chad Pennington , joining the Miami Dolphis upon his dismissal from the New York Jets. The two-year agreement is worth $11.5 million, as quoted by ProFootballTalk.com based on a report from the Associated Press.

Our View:However, as Talk notes, the true details of the agreement are not yet known by the public. It seems likely the first year of the deal is relatively light on salary while the second year will include a substantial roster bonus due in March, thus forcing Miami to decide whether to keep (and pay) Pennington for 2009, or whether to allow him to hit the market.
August 8, 2008
Chad Pennington has signed a two year deal to join the Dolphins, according to Fox Sports. Terms have not yet been announced.

Our View:Pennington will almost certainly enter Week 1 as the Dolphin's starter, and though he isn't an overly inspiring fantasy option, he makes a nice backup option now that he is in a position where he will be allowed to start.
August 8, 2008
Chad Pennington is reportedly on the Chiefs' radar, according to the KC Star.

Our View:He would be reunited with coach Herman Edwards, who worked together for five seasons with the Jets. Pennington would serve as a more stable backup to Brodie Croyle than Damon Huard or Tyler Thigpen. Pennington is still expected to land in Miami, where he will have a chance to compete for the starting quarterback job.
August 8, 2008
The Vikings are not believed to be among the teams interested in recently released field general Chad Pennington, according to the Star-Tribune.

Our View:There was speculation that Pennington would be a good fit with the Vikings, but they are committed to Tarvaris Jackson as their starter and are content with Gus Frerotte as the primary backup. The Dolphins are said to be the most likely to sign Pennington.
August 7, 2008
There are six teams that have an interest in signing quarterback Chad Pennington, reports ESPN.com. However, he likely won't sign for a few days because of the plethora of preseason games going on right now.

Our View:Only the Dolphins were mentioned as one of the teams, but there are a number of places Pennington could wind up. His fantasy value depends entirely on where that is.
August 7, 2008
The Chicago Bears are probably do not have any interest in acquiring quarterback Chad Pennington, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View:The team still wants Kyle Orton or Rex Grossman to lead them, for reasons known only to them. Fantasy owners assuredly know better than to let Orton or Grossman lead their teams.
August 7, 2008
As expected, Chad Pennington has been released by the Jets, according to ProFootballTalk.com. Jets' GM Mike Tannenbaum stated, "I have all the respect in the world for Chad as a person and a player. We have accomplished a lot of great things with Chad, including winning playoff games, which is very hard to do. He gave his heart and soul to this organization for a long, long time. I really appreciate everything he has done."

Our View:There are a handful of teams he can compete for a starting job with, such as Miami, who are believed to be targeting him now that he has been released by the Jets.
August 7, 2008
The Dolphins are going to target Chad Pennington if he is released by the Jets as expected, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:Bill Parcells drafted Pennington back in 2000 when he was with the Jets. Pennington would likely start over Josh McCown or John Beck, but his situation would not be favorable as the Dolphins lack a stable offensive line, and their receiving corps is less talented than the Jets, with Ted Ginn being their top target.
August 7, 2008
Adam Schefter of NFL Network indicates that Chad Pennington is expected to be released by the Jets today, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:The Chiefs, Dolphins, Falcons, Bears, and Vikings, could be possible destinations for him if he wants a chance to start. The signing of Brett Favre made him expendable to the Jets, as they favor Kellen Clemens as their primary backup.
August 6, 2008
With news that Brett Favre has been traded to the New York Jets, the talk will (eventually) turn to veteran passer Chad Pennington . In fact, writer Brad Briggs has already taken note and submitted an article for tommorrow's paper, urging the fans of the Chicago Bears to contact the team and encourage the signing of Pennington in Chicago, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Our View:It is a fair point to note Pennington is getting on in years and will not present an option that can be viewed as move for the future. However, with Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman working to earn snaps as the starting passer, it would seem wise for the Bears to at least consider a move to add a worthy veteran arm of reliability. The Bears are also rumored to be tracking the status of Chris Simms in Tampa Bay, much younger and much more likely to stick around for a few years. We'll track the situation and see if Pennington gets the call... assuming Favre reports to New York.
August 5, 2008
Head coach Eric Mangini hasn't decided whether to start Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens in Thursday's preseason game against the Browns. "Because there's a lot of factors that go into that, I'll get together post-practice, watch the tape," Mangini informs ESPN.com.

Our View:We're not sure why Mangini doesn't take the traditional route of starting, say, Pennington against the Browns and Clemens next week against the Redskins. Fantasy owners should continue to steer way clear of this situation.
August 2, 2008
Chad Pennington outperformed Kellen Clemens during practice Saturday, and continues to hold him off for the starting job at quarterback, according to ESPN. Pennington's green team beat Clemens' white squad 10-7. Each threw a touchdown pass and had no turnovers in the annual event. Pennington finished the scrimmage 8-of-14 for 115 yards, including a 27-yard scoring dart to Jerricho Cotchery. Clemens was 8-of-22 for 137 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Dustin Keller.

Our View:Pennington remains ahead of Clemens, but there is still a long way to go in the competition for the starting gig at quarterback.
July 28, 2008
Chad Pennington has performed better than Kellen Clemens in the early going of training camp, according to the Star-Ledger. Pennington hasn't been impressive, but Clemens has been a downright disappointment. Clemens still looks uncomfortable in the pocket, and has already thrown four interceptions, while Pennington is yet to throw one.

Our View:As of now, the conservative Pennington looks to be ahead of Clemens for the starting job.
July 28, 2008
The Jets have cancelled both practices for Monday, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:The team did not disclose the reason for shutting down camp for a day. Practice is scheduled to resume Tuesday, with two sessions.
July 24, 2008
Chad Pennington revealed that he was playing with two torn ligaments in his right ankle last season, according to the NY Post. He said, "It was an injury that I could easily have taken three weeks off, but you guys know how I am, I didn't believe it that."

Our View:Pennington is a tough pro, but is still expected to lose to Kellen Clemens for the starting gig at quarterback this season.
July 8, 2008
With training camp on the horizon, Chad Pennington is working on changing mechanical issues with his throwing motion, according to the Sporting News. He is looking to improve his consistency on his throws, namely his velocity.

Our View:He is trying to hold off young gun Kellen Clemems for the starting gig with the Jets this season, and should be a tight battle through training camp.
June 7, 2008
Chad Pennington is reportedly favoring the right ankle he injured last season, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:He sustained a high ankle sprain at the start of last season, and it seemingly continues to linger into 2008, as he was reportedly walking with a slight limp at times during Friday's practice session. If he doesn't get this under control and it continues to be an issue, then it could improve Kellen Clemens' chances of starting this season.
June 6, 2008
Chad Pennington is overhauling his throwing mechanics according to The Sporting News. The report notes that heading into the 2008 season, Pennington knows his 65.6 career completion percentage might not be enough to allow him to reclaim the starting job he lost to Clemens eight games into last season. So this offseason, his personal reclamation project began of reinventing himself.

Our View:Unless he can bolster his arm strength, his chances of reclaiming the starting role in New York are slim. His chances of being a fantasy starting option? Even less.
May 28, 2008
Quarterback Chad Pennington struggled during passing drills at the New York Jets organized team activities, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:In a passing drill (with no defenders), Pennington came up well short on a 15-yard ‘out’ route. Moments later, he bounced a 20-yard out and, perhaps overcompensating, badly overthrew his next pass, another 20-yard out, to receiver Laveranues Coles. It's still early in the process, but not the kind of update you want to hear, especially considering there was no pass rush in his face.
May 15, 2008
Chad Pennington worked out with the Jets first team on Thursday though he and Kellen Clemens figure to alternate working with the starting unit every other day, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:It looks like the starting spot is truly up for grabs here and will be determined by who performs better, which in our minds is that way that all position battles should be determined.
April 22, 2008
A rumor has emerged that the Ravens may be interested in trading for Chad Pennington if the Jets choose Matt Ryan in Saturday's draft, Scout.com reports.

Our View:We'll consider this idle speculation at this point. It seems more likely that the Ravens would try to trade up if Ryan actually slips down to the No. 6 spot in the draft.
March 31, 2008
Chad Pennington is not on the trading block, according to the Daily News. "Chad is under contract. I'm happy he is here. Eric (Mangini) is happy he is here and the best player will play. Chad is going to be here this year," said general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Pennington could easily be the starter coming out of training camp. But he and Clemens could have company this summer. The Jets held a private workout in Boston on March 21 for Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, which was attended by Mangini, Tannenbaum and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. They are the three key quarterback decision-makers and they all would not have been there, if the Jets did not have serious interest in Ryan.
March 5, 2008
The Jets aren't only spending big bucks on free agents. Chad Pennington is also earning a hefty paycheck in 2008. According to the New York Daily News, Pennington's 2008 base salary is up to $6 million from $4.8 million due to a clause in his contract. His cap number for the coming season is $9 million. Ouch.
March 4, 2008
The New York Jets are in win-now mode making quarterback Chad Pennington the likely starter for the organization in 2008, according to the Daily News. This report could be more speculation than fact, as GM Mike Tannenbaum emphasized he’s not into a quick fix - and the recent flurry of free agent signings was made in the interest of building the franchise for the long-term. The much-maligned Pennington is expected to compete with Kellen Clemens for the starting job during the offseason.
February 22, 2008
New York Jets HC Eric Mangini announced the starting quarterback job would be an open competition in 2008, according to the Record. Mangini, who made the announcement at the Indianapolis scouting combine, dismissed any thought that Pennington would be traded, instead he will remain and compete with second-year QB Kellen Clemens. Neither player was particularly effective on a consistent basis last season, as New York finished the season ranked 25th in passing offense (188.4 yards-per-game).
January 8, 2008
Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum confirmed on Monday that the team will bring quarterback Chad Pennington back in 2008. When asked about potential trade offers for Pennington, Tannenbaum told the Daily News, "We would listen to anything, but I expect Chad to be back." Pennington will apparently compete with the underwhelming Kellen Clemens for the Jets starting job next season, and Tannenbaum also said they wouldn't attempt to renegotiate his $4.8 million salary becaue they are well under the salary cap.
