According to the Chicago Tribune, new Raiders' quarterback Jeff Garcia believes he should be the starter in Oakland this season even though he is second on the depth chart to JaMarcus Russell. Garcia was quoted as saying "Not knocking JaMarcus or anybody else on the team, but I have a belief in my own abilities that has me feeling I am the best quarterback on the team. That's just how I approach the game."

Our View:Garcia has made no bones about the fact that he wants to start this season, and now he is pleading his case. The Raiders almost have to start Russell after drafting him first overall a few years ago, but if he struggles early don't be shocked to see Garcia.

The Raiders are confirming that they signed Jeff Garcia to a deal, according to the Contra Costa Times. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Our View:The Raiders considered signing him two years ago before he decided to play for the Buccaneers. Garcia will provide solid veteran depth behind JaMarcus Russell.

The St. Petersburg Times confirms that Jeff Garcia will ink a deal with the Raiders.

Our View:The 39-year-old vet will serve as the primary backup to JaMarcus Russell. This could mark the end of Andrew Walter's career in Oakland. Garcia will be returning to the bay area, as he played for the 49ers from 1999-2003.

Jeff Garcia is undergoing negotiations on a deal with Oakland that could be finalized as early as today, according to NBC Bay Area.

Our View:Apparently there weren't any teams willing to give the 39-year-old veteran an outright starting job and, while he could get a chance to compete in Oakland, it's very much expected that he'll enter as JaMarcus Russell's backup. Garcia almost surely will not be worth owning initially in the year as he'll only gain value if Russell gets hurt or struggles for the first couple weeks.

The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat states that the 49ers are not interested in bringing back Jeff Garcia. Coach Mike Singletary said, "When I look at Shaun Hill, I think he did a great job last year. I am not sure how much better we get by bringing in a Jeff Garcia and adding to the mix when you have a guy like Shaun Hill."

Our View:The club still has Alex Smith, who should compete with Damon Huard for the backup role behind Shaun Hill. The club could add a quarterback in the draft as well. The Vikings were initially interested in Garcia, but they are out of the running after inking Sage Rosenfels.
