The Steelers have decided to go with Byron Leftwich as their backup quarterback and rookie Dennis Dixon as No. 3, and they will put Charlie Batch on injured reserve or use a procedural injury settlement in which he would be available to them if needed later, accordind to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:Batch has about four more weeks before he will be healthy enough to play after his collarbone was broken Aug 8 in the first preseason game. If the Steelers place him on injured reserve, he would be done for the season. If they release him and reach an injury settlement with him, he could be available to them in the second half of the season. Batch had one year left on his contract with the Steelers and would be paid his $1,355,000 salary if placed on injured reserve. If they reach an injury settlement with him, he would receive a portion of that salary and would become a free agent and could sign with any other team. But he also would be available to the Steelers after midseason if, for example, they lost one of their quarterbacks to an injury - if he did not sign elsewhere. With Big Ben firmly planted in the starting role, Leftwich and Dixon carry limited value as fantasy commodities, though Dixon could be of interest for those who prefer to gamble on long-term views in keeper leagues.

Charlie Batch is likely headed for the injured reserve or the team will use a procedural injury settlement in which he would be available to them if needed later, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:Batch has around four more weeks before he will be healthy enough to play after his collarbone was broken August 8 in the preseason opener. If the Steelers place him on IR, he would be finished for the season. If they release him and reach an injury settlement with him, he could be available to them in the second half of the season. Byron Leftwich is going to serve as the No. 2 quarterback heading into Week 1, with Dennis Dixon slated for the No. 3 spot.

X-rays show backup passer Charlie Batch's surgically-repaired broken right collarbone is healing well, according to the Sporting News.

Our View:The hope is to begin rehabilitation in the trainer's room in the coming weeks. The Steelers have been using Byron Leftwich as the backup in his stead with rookie Dennis Dixon working the third string, but the questions will be asked once Batch is set to come back. Do they roll with Leftwich and Dixon, or does the veteran get a spot back? The team is unlikely to carry four quarterbacks through the season, but Dixon has shown well. We'll keep you posted on his progress and how the team reacts to the situation.

Charlie Batch commented that his surgically repaired broken right collarbone is feeling better, and he began his rehab Tuesday, hoping that he will be able to return sooner than expected, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He said, "I feel pretty good right now. I always felt I would be back before the timetable anyway. I always have whenever I had anything done before. But you want to err on the side of caution."

Our View:He could return to the Steelers for their third, and possibly second, game of the regular season.

Steelers' backup quarterback Charlie Batch suffered a broken right collarbone on Friday night and is expected to miss about a month of action, according to ESPN.

Our View:Daunte Culpepper and Byron Leftwich will compete for the primary backup job while Batch is on the shelf, with Dennis Dixon also in the mix.
