Dolphins coach Nick Saban has stated that he hopes to re-sign Gus Frerotte, according to the Miami Herald. "He did a fantastic job for us last year," Saban said of Frerotte. "I also indicated to him how much we appreciated the job he did and how much we wanted him to be back on our team next year." Frerotte was released by Miami after the acquisition of Daunte Culpepper.

Hours after acquiring Daunte Culpepper from the Vikings, the Dolphins released last year’s starting quarterback Gus Frerotte, according to the AP. Frerotte, who went 9-6 as a starter last year, would have cost the Dolphins $4.38 million against the salary cap this year. The Dolphins remain in the market for a backup quarterback after cutting ties with both Frerotte and last year’s backup Sage Rosenfels, who signed last week with the Texans.

The Dolphins are $4.2 million over the projected salary cap of $94.5 million for 2006, meaning that if a new CBA isn't agreed to by Sunday night, they'll have to make more cuts to get under the cap. The Miami Herald reports that Gus Frerotte is the most likely target to be cut because he is scheduled to earn $4.38 million in 2006 because of rollover clauses that increased his base salary.

The Miami Herald reports that Gus Frerotte is likely to remain with the Dolphins even though the team is using the offseason to find a long-term answer at the quarterback position. However, Frerotte will have to restructure his contract before next season because he will count nearly $4.5 million against the cap.
