Updating an earlier report, Alonzo Mourning has decided to retire, according to the Associated Press. Mourning said, "I truly feel it is best that I retire. When you've got something you love and you are passionate about, it is hard to let that go. But at 38 I feel I physically done all I can for this game. It has been an amazing ride. It is not a sad day, but it is a day to celebrate. I can think of a million people right now that would have loved to walk the path I've walked. The ups and the downs made it even more joyous."

Our View:The seven-time All-Star averaged 17.1 points and 8.5 rebounds over 15 campaigns in the NBA. He was named the Defensive Player of the Year twice.

Alonzo Mourning could announce his retirement as early as today, according to the Miami Herald. He has been rehabbing from a serious knee injury and said, "I'm working my butt off to try to get myself right physically, to get back out there and play ball. But if it doesn't happen, man, I've lived an amazing career. The years of basketball have been good to me and my family. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end."

Our View:The 38-year-old vet is considered the greatest player ever for Miami, as the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year has racked up nearly 26,000 points and 7,000 rebounds over his 15-year career.

The Associated Press reports that though Alonzo Mourning has noticeable range of motion in his surgically repaired knee, the former Miami Heat center is uncertain whether a return to the NBA this season, or ever, is realistic. "I'm working my butt off to try to get myself right physically to get back out there and play ball," Mourning said. "But if it doesn't happen, man, I've lived an amazing career. Really." Mourning is expected to make a decision on his return this season in the next few weeks.

Our View:Mourning has cited fears of sustaining an injury that would not only affect his basketball life, but his ability to function at his personal one as well. Mourning tore the patella tendon and quadriceps muscle in his right leg in December of 2007. He is not under contract with the Heat, but he practices at the team facility and a spot in the team's locker room has been reserved for him.
