Player Notes
November 30, 2008
Last night J.R. Smith was shutout just one game after scoring 32 points against New Orleans. On Sunday against the Rockets, he poured in 19 points in 30 minutes to help the Nuggets win 104-94..

Our View:It's unclear how coach George Karl wants to use his gunner, which makes him one of the more frustrating players to roster.
November 28, 2008
J.R. Smith scored a game-high 29 points in Thursday's close 105-101 loss to the Hornets, to go along with five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Our View:Smith scored a season-high in points tonight, but was only averaging 10 points over his previous six outings.
November 1, 2008
J.R. Smith played another 35 minutes as the Nuggets came back to defeat the Clippers in overtime on Friday. He scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Our View:Smith, who usually does his damage from behind the three-point line, hit just one three on Friday. The 10 defensive rebounds may not happen again the rest of the season. The Nuggets were without Carmelo Anthony as he served the final game of his suspension resulting from a DUI charge. Once he returns, you can expect Smith's minutes to decline, but he still holds fantasy value.

J.R. Smith played 35 minutes in Denver's loss to Utah on Wednesday. He finished with 17 points, five rebounds and three three-pointers.

Our View:Smith likely won't see this many minutes once Carmelo Anthony returns from suspension. He should remain an excellent source of three-pointers but temper your expectations for the scorer.
October 28, 2008
J.R. Smith has been playing some point guard to limit Allen Iverson's time at that spot, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View:Smith may get the most playing time of his career this season, and might even be worthy of a late round draft pick in deeper leagues.
October 21, 2008
J.R. Smith came off of the bench to score 22 points in 31 minutes. He also had five assists, four rebounds and two steals in the Nuggets' 105-94 win over Toronto.

Our View:Not quite sure how he didn't get the start over Mateen Cleaves and Dahntay Jones, but it seems clear that Smith will play a larger role for the Nuggets this season and he should be an excellent late round source of threes and points.
October 19, 2008
J.R. Smith earned the start in Sunday's 107-111 loss to Minnesota. He had 14 points in 23 minutes. Allen Iverson did not play.

Our View:Smith is an excellent scorer but it is not certain that he will start. Either way, he should produce enough points and threes to be drafted in most leagues. A possible trade of Allen Iverson would skyrocket Smith's fantasy value.
October 11, 2008
J.R. Smith scored a game-high 21 points in Friday's 118-95 preseason win over Minnesota, to go along with two rebounds, two assists, and four steals. He played just under 26 minutes, which also led the team.

Our View:Smith is battling for the starting guard spot opposite Allen Iverson, and tonight's performance helped improve his odds.
September 27, 2008
The Rocky Mountain News reports that J.R. Smith and Anthony Carter will battle it out for the other guard spot opposite Allen Iverson.

Our View:Smith did not start once last season, but increased his scoring from 9.9 to 15.7 after the All-Star break. Obviously, his value would increase if he wins the starting job. Threes and steals are the only categories Smith will contribute to after points.
August 22, 2008
J.R. Smith has re-signed a multi-year deal with the Nuggets, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Specific terms of the deal were not disclosed. VP Mark Warkentien said, "We’re extremely delighted to have J.R. back. His blend of off-the-charts-athleticism and long-range shooting ability is rare, especially for someone his age. We believe his best basketball is still to come."

Our View:Smith would hold solid fantasy value if presented with a bigger role with the Nuggets. He averaged 12.3 points on only 19.2 minutes per game last season.

Despite recent rumors, sources in Denver indicate the Denver Nuggets will in fact be offering restricted free-agent guard J.R. Smith a new deal within the next seven to ten days, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View:According to the News, the Nuggets already have extended a one-year, $3.04 qualifying offer to Smith, but it looks like he's going to get some long-term security. As always, we will keep you posted.
August 5, 2008
If rumors are true, the Cavaliers could be interested in signing Nuggets restricted free agent J.R. Smith , according to the Ohio Morning-Journal.

Our View:Look for the deal to be a sign-and-trade if it happens.
July 18, 2008
Restricted free-agent guard J.R. Smith has told local reporters that he has not received any offer sheets from NBA teams and the Nuggets have not put forth any offer other than the qualifying one-year agreement for $3.04 million, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View:It was once believed that Smith would be a coveted commodity and would draw interest from several teams. It now appears the value is inflated and most teams, having either spent their dollars or choosing to save for down the road, are no longer willing to commit to Smith at this time. If that changes or he finally decides to sign the one-year qualifier with Denver, we'll let you know.
June 27, 2008
The Denver Nuggets gave J.R. Smith a qualifying offer, which means he is a restricted free agent, and the team has the right to match any offer he receives, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View:The 22-year-old Smith has loads of potential, and the Nuggets say they will match any offer he receives, which is a smart thing to do. Smith has really improved as a shooter, as his field goal percentage and three-point percentage has gone up every year he has been in the league.
March 24, 2008
J.R. Smith blew up on Monday night for 25 points in the fourth quarter including seven 3-pointers in the Nuggets 120-106 victory over the Grizzlies. Smith scored 27 points in just 22 minutes on the night as his instant offense helped to keep the Grizzlies at bay. Smith continues to be an inconsistent performer from night to night, but when he gets his shot rolling like tonight, there are few better bets to put up points off the bench.
February 22, 2008
J.R. Smith scored a game high 43 points though it wasn't enough as the Nuggets fell 135-121 to the Bulls. Smith was 15-for-25 from the field and made a huge eight 3-pointers in the loss while Allen Iverson scored 20 and Carmelo Anthony added 22.
