Player Notes
December 2, 2008
Josh Smith will return for the Hawks on Wednesday night, but coach Mike Woodson will monitor his playing time closely, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:Smith has only appeared in four games for the Hawks this year, but averaged 12 points and eight rebounds in those games.
November 30, 2008
Josh Smith, who missed the last 12 games with a sprained ankle, hopes to return to the court Wednesday against Memphis, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Smith said, "I’m ready to go right now. But if the guys that know the Hawks’ athletic training staff think I should wait a couple more games, I have to go with it."

Our View:Smith looks to be ready to pencil back into lineups at some point next week, if not Wednesday.
November 26, 2008
Hawks forward Josh Smith was put on the team's travel list, and he will practice on Thursday before possibly playing on Saturday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:It's more likely that Smith returns in the middle of next week instead of Saturday. He does a lot of different things, so fantasy owners should be itching to get him back in the lineup.
November 21, 2008
Josh Smith (ankle) is back to running on a treadmill, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:Smith could return next weekend. In his first four games, he was a defensive force and was an integral part of the Hawks' hot start. He should return to carrying defensive categories for his owners.
November 16, 2008
Josh Smith (ankle) is now in a walking boot, but there is no clear-cut timetable for his return, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:The initial timetable was 2-4 weeks, but he is hoping to return sooner.
November 13, 2008
The sprained ankle that Josh Smith is suffering from has gotten better, and the swelling has gone down recently, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:The initial prognosis was that Smith would miss somewhere from two weeks to a month, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that he could be back a little sooner.
November 8, 2008
TSN reports that Josh Smith will miss the next two to four weeks due to a sprained ankle.

Our View:Through his first three games this season, the talented fourth-year pro is averaging a double-double with 14.0 points and 10.7 rebounds to go along with 3.3 blocks per contest.
November 7, 2008
Josh Smith left Friday's game in the second quarter with a sprained ankle, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:We'll update you on Smith's status as we have more information.
October 29, 2008
Josh Smith showed why some selected him as a first rounder while putting up big numbers on Wednesday against the Magic. He finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks and four steals. He also hit a three in the effort.

Our View:Smith can put up excellent defensive numbers when motivated. If he can keep up his motviation, he will be one of the top fantasy players once again.
October 26, 2008
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Josh Smith went down in the first half of Thursday's game in Detroit with a sprained right ankle. He missed a portion of Sunday's practice, but coach Mike Woodson thinks he will play in the season opener.

Our View:Smith has had a rocky preseason after signing a rich offseason deal. As long as he can continue to produce excellent defensive numbers, he should be worthy of a second round selection.
October 21, 2008
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that coach Mike Woodson specifically named Josh Smith as being a player who needs to step it up as the regular season approaches. Smith took exception and shattered his mouthpiece on his way to the locker room a few moments later. “I’m not letting these guys off the hook," said Woodson. Smith later insisted that his reaction to Woodson was strictly a tongue-in-cheek showing to get a rise out of everyone — and he later went into Woodson’s office to make sure there was no mistaking his motives. “Coach is right. I do need to crank it up...I’m going to play 82 games as hard as I can and do whatever it takes for my team to win, be it rebounding, blocking shots or scoring or whatever it is.”

Our View:Smith has been a shadow of his usual self during this preseason. He’s grabbed just one rebound in the Hawks’ last two preseason games and didn’t block a single shot in either game. Smith’s preseason averages of 11.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 blocks are a far cry from his averages of 17.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.8 blocks and 1.5 steals last season.
October 10, 2008
Josh Smith contributed 12 points, one board, three assists, one steal, and two blocks in Friday's 102-80 loss to the Blazers. He played a little over 25 minutes.

Our View:Smith averaged 17.2 points and 8.2 boards per game in 2007, and looks to be headed for another productive campaign in 2008.
October 8, 2008
Josh Smith scored 18 points in 23 minutes in the Hawks' 100-96 win over the Suns on Wednesday night. Smith was 6-of-10 from the floor and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the line.

Our View:It looks like Smith is ready to pick up right where he left off a year ago. In 2007-2008, Smith scored 17 points a game and corralled eight boards a game.
October 6, 2008
Josh Smith played a game high 31:39 on Monday night in the Hawks 118-101 victory over the Magic. He scored nine points as he connected on just 4-of-14 shots, though he did add seven boards.

Our View:Smith will continue to be a productive point getter (17.2 points last season), and he is a surprisingly strong rebounder (over eight per game the past two years) for guy who doesn't have the reputation of being a huge inside presence.

The Atlanta Hawks have decided to match the five-year, $58 million offer sheet forward Josh Smith signed with the Grizzlies, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "Tonight, the Hawks organization received an offer sheet from the Memphis Grizzlies for Josh Smith. We are happy to announce that we will match their offer sheet," Hawks general manager Rick Sund said

Our View:Smith is a quality fantasy player who put up over 17.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.8 blocks and 1.5 steals per game. He is only 22, so those numbers should improve in time.
August 8, 2008
Restricted free agent Josh Smith has signed an offer sheet with the Grizzlies worth $58 million, according to the Memphis Edge.

Our View:The Grizzlies are said to be the last team with significant room under the cap, and decided to target Smith, who averaged 17.2 points and 8.2 boards with Atlanta last season. The Hawks have said they would match any contract offer for Smith, but are on the hook next season with big contracts for Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson. If Smith lands in Memphis, he will play power forward alongside Rudy Gay at small forward.
July 28, 2008
The Pistons had talks with the Hawks about restricted free agent Josh Smith, but Atlanta was asking for too much, a source informs the Detroit Free Press. The discussion ended a few weeks ago.

Our View:These talks apparently came before Josh Childress bolted for Greece, and the asking price for Smith may be even higher now. The Hawks may still move this talented young forward, and the move will likely be a sign-and-trade.
July 10, 2008
With the flurry of free-agent signings and the list of moves made in the NBA over recent days, the list of NBA talents available for hire is dwindling, now topped by four major draws, inlcuding Atlanta forward Josh Smith , Philadelphia forward Andre Iguodala, Charlotte forward Emeka Okafor, and Chicago guard/forward Luol Deng.

Our View:The bidding for Smith and Okafor will be the most intriguing, both playing the same position with Smith likely to garner a larger offer based on his young age and athletic talent. Okafor is more polished and reliable, but the Bobcats are rumored to be seeking a sign-and-trade deal with a secondary team. Iguodala turned down a $57 million offer to stay in Philly in June but is likely to be re-signed now that the team has added Elton Brand. Deng is a restricted free agent and turned down an offer for a $57.5 million extension last month. The Bulls seem likely to match any offer and we doubt he changes uniforms. Other names of note include Golden State center Andris Biedrins and guard Monta Ellis, Atlanta forward Josh Childress, Chicago guard Ben Gordon, New Jersey forward/center Nenad Krstic, and Cleveland guard Danile Gibson.
July 8, 2008
Now that Elton Brand is apparently headed to Philly and Corey Maggette is on his way to Golden State, the Clippers may use their excess cap space to make a run at restricted free agent Josh Smith.

Our View:The Atlanta Hawks have said that they will match any offer for Smith, but it's doubtful they expected the Clippers to get in the mix. They are expected to throw a ton of cash at Smith within a matter of hours.
July 5, 2008
Forward Josh Smith left Philadelphia without signing an offer sheet, but he felt good about his experience. "[It's] definitely the City of Brotherly Love," Smith informs the Philadelphia Daily News. "I felt welcome as soon as I got here, people stopping me, telling me that they wanted me to really come. I think that it was first class how everything was prepared; it was very organized and I had a good time while I was out here." Smith is a restricted free agent, and the Hawks would have a week to match any offer he signs.

Our View:If Smith were unrestricted, teams would be lining up to court the 22-year-old forward. As it is, the thought seems to be that the Hawks would match whatever another team puts on the able. Only a front-loaded deal could make things complicated for the Atlanta organization.
July 3, 2008
The Philadelphia 76ers gave Josh Smith, a restricted free agent, the red carpet treatment yesterday and he was impressed, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Sixers can over Smith a deal in the five-year, $66 million range. "They fit the style of play that I like to play, which is up-tempo," Smith told reporters at the airport. "They have great talent. This is one of the teams that I'm looking at."

Our View:The Hawks could match, but may hesitate given the headaches Smith has caused in the past, large contracts that are due to Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson, and an ownership group that rarely agrees on anything. Putting Smith in an offense with Andre Miller would increase his fantasy value.
July 2, 2008
Josh Smith is to meet with the 76ers on Wednesday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:The 6-foot-9 Smith is a fantasy freak because he is valuable in all categories. If he were to play with Andre Miller under coach Maurice Cheeks, his fantasy status would be even higher. However, the Hawks have the right to match any offer as Smith is a restricted free agent. Smith has had multiple run-ins with Hawks coaching and management during his four seasons in Atlanta.
June 30, 2008
The Hawks hope to retain the services of restricted free agents Josh Smith and Josh Childress, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. If Smith and Childress sign offer sheets with other clubs when the free agency period opens, the Hawks will have seven days to match the offers.

Our View:Josh Smith is being targeted by Philadelphia with their $11 million-plus in available cap space. Josh Childress is going to targeted by at least three different veteran-stocked playoff clubs that are over the salary cap, meaning they’ll use their mid-level exception to try and scoop him up while the Hawks are busy figuring out what they’ll do with Smith.
June 23, 2008
Josh Smith could be on the Pistons' radar, according to the Detroit News. Smith is a restricted free agent reportedly looking for a deal that starts in excess of $11 million. Hawks' new GM Rick Sund might not be willing to start a deal at that price. If an impasse happens, the Pistons are believed to come asking about a potential sign-and-trade deal.

Our View:Smith averaged 17.2 points, 8.2 boards, 3.4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 2.8 blocks per contest in 2007-08, and the Hawks won't easily let the rising star leave Atlanta.
May 4, 2008
Josh Smith would like to stick with the Hawks for the 2008-09 season. He is a restricted free agent this summer. "Most definitely, we came a long way," Smith tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I grew with this team."

Our View:We'd be shocked if the Hawks let this budding star leave.
April 28, 2008
Josh Smith added 28 points and seven blocks to Joe Johnson's 35 points, and the surprising Atlanta Hawks overcame two double-digit deficits to beat the Boston Celtics 97-92 on Monday night, evening the series at two games apiece.

Our View: The best-of-seven series travels back to Boston, where the Celtics have won by an average of 21 points per game.
April 23, 2008
The Atlanta Hawks have few points of optimism after falling in Game 2, 77-96, to take a 0-2 deficit to the Boston Celtics in their first-round playoff series. Forwards Josh Smith and Marvin Williams led their effort with 13 points each, but neither will wish to dwell on the evening.

Our View:Smith shot just 3-for-13 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line. Williams wasn't much better, shooting 3-of-9 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe.
April 16, 2008
With the playoffs looming the and Hawks hoping to keep their key pieces in tune for games that truly matter, the full starting lineup worked tonight's 99-113 loss to the Miami Heat. Forward Josh Smith was the leading scorer, shooting 7-of-13 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe to score 20 points, adding seven rebound to the effort.
April 12, 2008
Josh Smith scored 17 points, pulled six boards, and dished out four assists despite fouling out in under 27 minutes of action.

Our View:Smith also added four big blocks on the night and has now scored at least 17 points in 6 of his last 7 games for the Hawks.
April 11, 2008
The Atlanta Hawks showed no mercy this evening, putting three of their best players among the top NBA performers of the day while another made a strong bid to join them as Atlanta beat up on the Knicks, 116-104. Forward Josh Smith went 7-of-12 from the field and 10-of-12 from the free-throw line to score 24 points, also posting 6 rebounds and four assists. Guards Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson were also up to their offensive best, Bibby going 10-of-19 from the field and 3-of-6 from long range to score 24 while Johnson went 13-of-21 from the field and 6-of-9 from three-point range to finish with a team-leading 34.

Our View:Rookie Al Horford also put his two cents in, going 6-of-10 from the field and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe to finish with 19 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
April 8, 2008
Josh Smith and Joe Johnson got their work done in the box score this evening, but the effort fell short as the Hawks suffered the 98-112 loss loss to the Indiana Pacers. Smith went 7-of-18 from the field and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line to score 25 points, tacking 13 rebounds, three assists, a blocked sheet and a steal to the top fantasy performance of the night. Joe Johnson was more impressive in scoring, going 13-of-24 from the field and 2-of-6 from the three-point line to score 30, posting six rebounds but just four assists.
April 5, 2008
Josh Smith scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on Saturday night for the Hawks. As solid a night as that sounds it's barely better than his season long marks of 17.1 points and 8.2 boards a game. This is the fourth straight season that Smith will have seen his scoring average go up, and his current 45.6 shooting percentage would be a career best.
April 1, 2008
Josh Smith led the Hawks with 26 points and eight boards in Monday night's win over Memphis (116-99). He also chipped in six assists, three steals, and a block. That was his highest scoring outing since February 23, when he poured in 30 points against Utah.
March 12, 2008
Josh Smith did his best to keep the Hawks in the win column, but his marvelous personal performance failed to result in a W. Smith scored 16 points with a whopping 22 rebounds, adding two assists, two steals, and a block. Smith has been a great fantasy commodity for many this season and he continues to improve his overall game. Getting the Hawks on track is priority , but we can all enjoy the fantasy rewards along the way.
March 4, 2008
Josh Smith suffered a surprisingly slow night, scoring just 20 in Atlanta’s loss to Golden State (135-118). He added 11 rebounds and four blocks to help ease the pain.
February 4, 2008
Josh Smith had one of the most complete games of his career on Monday night as he scored 19 points with nine assists, six rebounds, four steals and a career best nine blocked shots in the Hawks 96-91 victory over the Sixers. Josh Childress added 21 points in support of Smith who had a massive fantasy performance.
January 5, 2008
It turns out there's a reason why Josh Smith hasn't been attacking the rim with his usual veracity in recent weeks. It turns out he's been dealing with a sore neck since colliding with Dwyane Wade on Dec. 19, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. J-Smoove has continued to play and perform at a pretty high level, but he may not be at peak performance until the soreness subsides.
