Jupiter, FL (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals signed 17 players to one-year contracts, the club announced Saturday, including outfielder Skip Schumaker and infielder Brendan Ryan.

Player Notes
Todd Wellemeyer, P Monday 2/8, 8:27 PM CT
The Giants have offered Todd Wellemeyer a minor league deal, according to the Mercury News.

Our View:Wellemeyer held a dismal 5.89 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 122.1 innings (21 starts) with St. Louis in 2009, and the 31-year-old hurler is unlikely going to get a strong deal elsewhere.
Skip Schumaker, 2B Monday 2/8, 7:03 PM CT
Skip Schumaker has agreed to a two-year deal with the Cardinals to avoid arbitration, according to team beat writer Matthew Leach's twitter page. It is believed to be worth $4.7MM.

Our View:Schumaker is batting .312 over his last three seasons in St. Louis, and scored 172 total runs over his last two. The 29-year-old middle infielder was worth retaining for another two years.
Todd Wellemeyer, P Friday 2/5, 1:43 PM CT
The New York Post is reporting that the Mets could sign former Cardinals pitcher Todd Wellemeyer.

Our View:So this is what happens when you strike out on literally every single free agent pitcher that didn't have a 5.89 ERA in 2009? This being the Mets we're talking about, however, we are probably just lucky they don't want him to play first base.
