Mariners come to terms with P Morrow, three others Peoria, AZ (Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners have come to terms with
pitcher Brandon Morrow and three other players on contracts for the 2009
season.
Morrow posted a 3-4 record with 10 saves and a 3.34 earned run average in 45
games -- five starts -- for the Mariners last year.
Pitcher David Aardsma also agreed to a one-year contract. Acquired from Boston
in January, Aardsma was 4-2 with a 5.55 ERA in a 47 games for the Red Sox in
2008.
Seattle also signed pitcher Cesar Jimenez and outfielder Franklin Gutierrez.
Luke French gave up four runs off seven hits through 5.1 innings in a 4-3 loss to Oakland Wednesday night.
Our View:French walked two batters and gave up a double and a homer against only three Ks, dropping his fifth game of the season and snapping a two-game win streak in the process. His ERA now stands at 3.90.
Russell Branyan socked his 24th homer of the year, but it wasn't enough to lift the Mariners, who lost to Oakland 4-3 Wednesday.
Our View:Branyan's two-run shot was his fourth bomb in seven games, and he's driven in eight runs over that time. Still, he's struck out 14 times in his past 10 outings and holds just a .241 average as a result.
Franklin Gutierrez is not in the Mariners lineup Wednesday due to flu-like symptoms, according to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times.
Our View:Gutierrez was pulled from Tuesday's game after hyperventilating and experiencing flu-like symptoms. He'll likely be fine once the sickness passes, which shouldn't take too long. Expect him back this weekend.
