Pirates exercise 2010 option on manager Russell
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The John Russell era could very well extend into 2010, as the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they exercised the 2010 club option on their manager.

The announcement was made on Saturday morning by senior vice president and general manager Neal Huntington.

Russell, the 38th manager in franchise history, will begin his second campaign at the helm after guiding the Pirates to a 67-95 mark last season.

"JR met or exceeded expectations in his first year as the Pirates manager," said Huntington. "His club worked hard to play ... More...

Player Notes
Charlie Morton, P Sunday 9/5, 4:18 PM CT
Charlie Morton gave up two earned runs (six total) off eight hits and two walks with one strikeout over 3.2 innings against the Nationals on Sunday.

Our View:Through 12 starts with the Pirates this season, he's 1-11 with a 9.66 ERA and a WHIP on the wrong side of 2.00. He simply doesn't belong in the MLB>
Jeff Clement, 1B Sunday 9/5, 12:11 PM CT
Jeff Clement (oblique) has been shut down for the remainder of the season, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View:Talk about bad luck. While on a rehab assignment for a torn meniscus, Clement suffered a pulled oblique. The former first-round pick hit just .201 through 144 at-bats this year, and his future with the team could be in jeopardy.
Jeff Karstens, P Sunday 9/5, 10:20 AM CT
Jeff Karstens has been scratched from Sunday's start due to a sore shoulder, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:It's late enough in the season to assume that Karstens might be shut down for the year. There's no reason to risk further injury. Brian Burres will take his place on the mound Sunday.
