Phils' Hamels hurls first career shutout against Atlanta
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Cole Hamels went the distance for his first career shutout and the Philadelphia Phillies launched three home runs in defeating the Atlanta Braves 5-0 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

Hamels (5-3) allowed only four hits and two walks, striking out six. He retired 16 of the first 17 batters including 15 straight for Philadelphia, which is 5-5 in its last 10 games.

Player Notes
Scott Mathieson, P Friday 5/16, 10:16 AM CT
Scott Mathieson underwent a second Tommy John surgery yesterday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. He has hist first operation in 2006.

Our View:Mathieson was a pretty nice prospect at one point, but his career path is very cloudy now.
Kris Benson, P Friday 5/16, 10:12 AM CT
Kris Benson is scheduled to pitch a simulated game on May 26, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Benson is coming back from shoulder surgery.

Our View:The Phillies rotation hasn't exactly lit the world on fire, but Benson is still a long ways away from helping out.
Cole Hamels, P Friday 5/16, 10:07 AM CT
With all the young guys signing contract extensions, is it time for the Phillies to lock up Cole Hamels? It won't happen anytime soon, GM Pat Gillick tells the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Right now, it isn't going to happen," Gillick said. "If at some point, if [Hamels is] performing to the level, you're going to have to talk multiyear at some point."

Our View:Hamels is under the Phillies' control until 2012, so the team isn't in any rush.
