Report: Mets pick up Delgado's 2009 option
New York, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Mets have informed first baseman Carlos Delgado that they will pick up his option for the 2009 season, according to a report in the New York Post.

The 36-year-old's option is worth $12 million.

Delgado finished the 2008 season with 38 home runs and 115 RBI to go with a .271 average, but his Mets missed the playoffs by a single game for the second straight year.

Also in the Post's report, the club is close to reaching an agreement on a two-year contract with manager Jerry Manuel.

Player Notes
Carlos Beltran, CF Friday 10/10, 12:22 PM CT
The New York Mets will be willing to listen to offers for center fielder Carlos Beltran, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View:Take that for what it is worth. General managers likely take calls on pretty much everybody, just for due diligence, but they rarely lead to anything.
Ambiorix Burgos, P Thursday 10/9, 12:13 PM CT
Ambiorix Burgos will be jailed for three months ahead of trial for a hit-and-run accident that killed two women, according to the AP. A Dominican judge ordered him to remain behind bars Wednesday night out of concerns for his safety. The 24-year-old reliever said, "I am going to come out of this fine because my conscience is clear, and I’m not worried this will affect my career because I haven’t done anything."

Our View:Burgos spent the past season on the DL following elbow ligament replacement. He pitched in the minors last month while on a rehab assignment. He could be facing six months to two years in prison.
Ambiorix Burgos, P Tuesday 10/7, 7:39 PM CT
Ambiorix Burgos turned himself in on Tuesday, a week after police say he was involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed two women, according to SI.com. Witnesses say Burgos was the driver, even though his cousin claimed to be behind the wheel, according to police. Burgos also faces an unrelated charge of illegal weapon possession and had recently been released after posting a $3,000 bond. He also has an Oct. 23 court hearing in the U.S. stemming from assault and harassment charges filed after he allegedly threw his girlfriend to the ground.

Our View:The 24-year-old reliever missed all of last season due to Tommy John surgery and it remains to be seen how long he will remain on an MLB roster.
