Timlin activated from DL, Smith optioned
Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox activated righty Mike Timlin from the 15-day disabled list in time for Thursday's game against the club's bitter rival, the New York Yankees.

Timlin was placed on the DL on June 21, retroactive to June 17, with left knee tendonitis. Timlin is 3-3 with a 7.06 earned run average in 24 games this season for Boston.

To make room for Timlin, the Red Sox optioned pitcher Chris Smith to Triple-A Pawtucket. Smith has pitched to a 2.84 ERA in three games for Boston since being recalled on June 17.... More...

Player Notes
Jonathan Papelbon, P Friday 7/4, 1:13 PM CT
Jonathan Papelbon has not stepped on the mound in exactly one week, according to RedSox.com. "It's good, because you know there will be that period where I throw a bunch of days in a row," said Papelbon.

Our View:Fantasy players with Papelbon on their squad would sure like to see the streak end at some point, but it should be nothing to worry about. These things happen with closers from time to time.
Jon Lester, P Friday 7/4, 11:58 AM CT
Red Sox manager Terry Francona says that Jon Lester is a pitcher who can throw a lot of innings, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Lester has already thrown 117.2 innings this season, but they have been great. Fantasy owners aren't complaining, not with his 7-3 record and 3.21 ERA. Red Sox fans may not be in love with the idea of him going so many innings, however.
Jon Lester, P Thursday 7/3, 10:51 PM CT
Jon Lester performed like an ace on Thursday night pitching a complete game 7-0 victory over division rival New York. The left allowed five hits, walked two and struck out eight in his seventh win of the year.

Our View:The winning performance was easily his best since the no-hitter against the Royals in May.
