March 17, 2010
Aroldis Chapman overpowered the Brewers on Wednesday afternoon, striking out five and allowing just one hit in three innings of work. His spring ERA now rests at 1.29.

Our View:It's looking increasingly less likely that Chapman will spend any time in the minor leagues this season, as he has simply been as dominant as advertised. While he obviously won't be this unhittable to begin 2010, he must drafted in all formats.

According to MLB.com, Cuban phenom Aroldis Chapman will get his first spring start on Wednesday.

Our View:Chapman already has four scoreless innings under his belt this spring, but all came in relief. The Reds will look closely at Wednesday's tilt against the Brewers and if Chapman impresses they may reconsider their pending decision to send him to the minors. He's still determined to force his way into the rotation at the start of the regular season, and if he continues to dominate the Reds won't be able to deny him a spot.

Aroldis Chapman will most likely begin the season in the minor leagues, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Our View:There had been some recent speculation that the Cuban phenom could begin the year in the majors, but for the moment, that idea appears far fetched. If he continues to dominate, however, all bets are off.

A day after Aroldis Chapman's excellent spring debut, Reds pitching coach Bryan Price indicated that Chapman could potentially open this season in the majors, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It's not unrealistic to see (him making the club)," Price said. "But in the same respect, there's a lot of spring to go."

Our View:It's nice to hear that the Reds are at least open to having the star prospect in their initial starting rotation, so now it seems like it will come down to Chapman's effectiveness throughout the rest of spring training. Continue to monitor how he looks, as he'll be well worth drafting if he can continue to dazzle opponents.
March 8, 2010
Aroldis Chapman only issued one hit over two scoreless innings in Monday's 14-5 preseason win over the Royals. He had one walk with three strikeouts.

Our View:The prized prospect fared very well in his spring debut with the Reds. He hit 102-mph on the radar gun, and will be worth targeting as a flier if he lands a spot in Cincinnati's rotation.
March 4, 2010
Aroldis Chapman will make his Cactus League debut next Monday against the Royals, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. He will not start.

Our View:He is slated to pitch one inning. Expect it to be his shortest outing of the spring.
March 1, 2010
Aroldis Chapman will pitch in an intersquad game on Thursday, according to Cnati.com's C. Trent Rosencrans.

Our View:Aside from Stephen Strasburg, Chapman might just be the most eagerly-watched pitcher this spring. At this point it seems highly unlikely that he'd open the season in the Reds' starting rotation, though a strong showing in spring would certainly accelerate his path to the big leagues.

Considering Reds manager Dusty Baker's history with young pitchers, Aroldis Chapman could be in for a bumpy ride in Cincinnati, according to AOL FanHouse.

Our View:"Pitchers on Baker's teams have thrown more pitches per start than the National League average for pitchers on other teams in 14 of his 16 seasons," according to the website. Among the young pitchers that have experienced severe injuries under his tutelage are Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Russ Ortiz, and most recently, Edinson Volquez. Of course, that could just be conincidence, but a pretty strong one. Chapman could be a fine investment in one-and-done leagues this season, but be leery of him in keepers.
February 18, 2010
Aroldis Chapman could start the 2010 campaign with the Reds instead of heading to the minors, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:There is belief within the team that the 21-year-old hurler may be MLB-ready. Chapman's fantasy stock will obviously hinge on where he starts the season, and we will keep you posted on his progress.
January 12, 2010
Aroldis Chapman's contract would apparently become a three-year, $25.25 million contract followed by three years of arbitration should he be up in the majors by mid-May, according to Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan.

Our View:In other words, Chapman won't be up with the Reds anytime before mid-May. He still figures to spend most, if not all, of the 2010 season in the minors.
January 11, 2010
The Reds officially announced their signing of Cuban prospect Aroldis Chapman on Monday, according to the team's official site.

Our View:The deal is worth $30 million over six years, contrary to the five years that had been previously reported. The Reds were surprisingly able to outbid other interested teams that included the Red Sox, Angels and Blue Jays and now have an excellent core of young pitchers in Chapman, Johnny Cueto, Edinson Volquez, Homer Bailey and Mike Leake to go along with veterans Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang. Still, the 22-year-old Chapman will open the season in the minors and probably won't make an impact in the majors until 2011.
January 10, 2010
Updating a previous report, Aroldis Chapman's new contract with the Reds is worth $25 million over five years and contains a player option for a sixth year, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:The Reds will pay out Chapman over ten years and his 2010 salary will be worth around $1 million. More details will be released after he passes his physical, but the Reds have noted that bringing him up to the majors next year is an option.
January 10, 2010
Updating a story from earlier today, Aroldis Chapman has indeed signed a five-year, $30 million deal with the Reds, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Chapman is 22 years old and boasts a fastball that's been clocked in the triple digits. Expect the lefty to open next season somewhere in Cincinnati's minor league system, and it's tough to say whether the Reds would try to call him up to the MLB at any point in 2010.
January 10, 2010
Aroldis Chapman has reportedly signed with an NL Central team that is believed to be the Reds, according to Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan.

Our View:Chapman has apparently boarded a flight from Ft. Lauderdale to Cincinnati, where he's expected to sign a deal that's believed to be five years for $30 million. We should know more on this story later on today as it continues to develop.
January 7, 2010
Aroldis Chapman is expected to sign with either the Blue Jays or Angels in the coming days, according to the Toronto Sun.

Our View:As reported yesterday, Florida has bowed out of the chase. It seems crazy that he might end up with the Jays, but Toronto has likely decided to pony up after trading Roy Halladay last month. The far more deep-pocketed Angels should be considered the favorites, however.
January 6, 2010
Updating a previous report, the Marlins have apparently "conceded defeat" in the Aroldis Chapman sweepstakes, according to Clark Spencer on Twitter.

Our View:The Marlins now join the Astros, Mets and Yankees as teams that have given up on Chapman. This is surprising considering the Fish, as early as yesterday, seemed to be darkhorse favorites to land the Cuban fireballer. His asking price now appears to be around $21 million and the Blue Jays, Angles and Red Sox have been rumored as having the best chance at landing him.
January 6, 2010
Neither the Yankees nor the Mets are in the running for Cuban phenom Aroldis Chapman, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

Our View:Olney believes Chapman will eventually settle for a deal in the neighborhood of $20 million. Surprisingly, the team most publicly interested in his services so far has been the miserly Marlins. Stay tuned.
January 5, 2010
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the Marlins are believed to have increased their offer for Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman.

Our View:This is strange considering the Fish don't buck up for anyone and are one of the most shrewd teams in the game. Their previous offer was $13 million, so the raise is likely modest. They won't be able to outbid the other teams interested, but if their offer is close they have a shot at landing him due to the huge Cuban presence in Miami. Chapman is expected to make a decision in three or four days. Stay tuned.
January 4, 2010
Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports believes international free agent Aroldis Chapman will end up signing with the Florida Marlins.

Our View:Rosenthal theorizes that Chapman, who has been known to walk many batters, would be too "inefficient" a signing for the Red Sox or Yankees. While the Marlins almost never shell out any money, considering that Miami has the largest Cuban population of any city in America, they may make a special exception for the Cuban Chapman. Stay tuned.
January 1, 2010
The Toronto Blue Jays have entered the Aroldis Chapman sweepstakes after holding a "private workout" for the Cuban phenom on Thursday, according to ESPN.

Our View:Interesting. Toronto seems like an unlikely destination for Chapman, and while they may have legitimate interest, they likely won't be able to offer legitimate dollars.
January 1, 2010
The Angels have become the latest team to express interest in free agent pitcher Aroldis Chapman, according to ESPN.

Our View:They join the likes of both many small-market and large-market clubs pursuing the Cuban phenom. He is reportedly very good friends with Angels first baseman Kendry Morales. So far, the Marlins and the Red Sox are the only teams known to have officially offered him a deal.
