Player Notes

Andrew Bailey has been named the American League's Rookie of the Year for 2009, according to Noah Coslov of MLB.com. He posted 26 saves and a 1.84 ERA in 83.1 innings pitched.

Our View:Bailey won amongst a relatively weak crop that nonetheless included other worthy potential recipients in Detroit's Rick Porcello, Chicago's Gordon Beckham and Texas' Elvis Andrus. He is the first reliever to win the award since Huston Street did so for Oakland in 2005.

Andrew Bailey pitched a perfect ninth inning in his final appearance of the season on Sunday. He struck out one in a 5-3 loss to the Angels.

Our View:Bailey has a shot at Rookie of the Year honors in the AL after a season that saw him post 26 saves in 30 opportunities. He ended the season at 6-3 with a 1.84 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 83.1 innings.

One night after blowing a save against the Dodgers, the A's ran Andrew Bailey back out in the ninth inning in another save situation. He allowed just one hit while earning his sixth save of the season.

Our View:It seems pretty clear that Oakland wants Bailey in the game for save situations, despite the fact that he's already blown four saves this season. He has a great opportunity, but he hasn't done the best job of seizing it.
June 10, 2009
Andrew Bailey gave up three runs in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Twins. He allowed three hits and two walks in while taking his first loss of the season.

Our View:Bailey has been used extensively over the past week. Tonight was his fourth appearance in the last five days. He has been the A's best reliever all season, and he should still remain Oakland's closer.

Andrew Bailey picked up his fourth save of the season in Sunday's 3-0 win over the Orioles. He allowed a lone walk and struck out two in the ninth.

Our View:Bailey is just 4-for-7 in save opportunities this season, but the A's seem convinced he's their guys. At least for now. If he struggles Brad Ziegler may get another shot.
