Manager Bruce Bochy said that Madison Bumgarner and Todd Wellemeyer will have an open competition for the Giants' No. 5 starting spot, according to the San Jose Mercury News' Andrew Baggarly.

Our View:It will be no secret as to who fantasy owners will be rooting for in spring training; we all know what we're going to get from the perennially mediocre Wellemeyer, while Bumgarner carries a great deal of upside. Monitor the competition between these two before reaching for Bumgarner.

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that 20-year-old phenom Madison Bumgarner is still on track to be the Giants' fifth starter in 2010.

Our View:After he went 12-2 with a 1.85 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 25 appearances (24 starts) between High-A and Double-A last season, expectations will be understandably high. He's worth drafting in all formats, but should only be a later round flier in most mixed leagues. He is obviously just too unproven to take any earlier.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean said that he's comfortable opening the 2010 season with 20-year-old Madison Bumgarner as the team's No. 5 starter, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:Let the hype begin. Bumgarner, who was called up toward the end of last year for a brief audition, was excellent in the minors last season, going 12-2 with a 1.85 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 25 appearances (24 starts) between High-A and Double-A. He has excellent stuff, and while he'll surely struggle with the typical rookie ups and downs in 2010, his talent still makes him worthy of a late-round flyer in drafts.
