Player Notes
August 19, 2008
Matt Joyce swatted two homers against the Rangers on Tuesday night and finished with four RBI. He hadn't gone deep since July 21.

Our View:Joyce rarely plays against southpaws, and his lack of an everyday job help explains (a bit) his homer drought. We're hoping that Jim Leyland gives this rookie every opportunity in September to show if he deserves a bigger role in 2009.
July 21, 2008
Matt Joyce can't be stopped. The outfielder went 4-for-6 with a homer, triple, three runs, and five RBI in Monday's romp over the Royals. Joyce is hitting .426 with five homers and 13 RBI over his last 13 games.

Our View:The Tigers don't have an everyday spot for this rookie, but Jim Leyland is being forced to find him more time. We're not confident he can keep this up, but fantasy owners my try to ride the hot streak.
July 14, 2008
Matt Joyce was named the AL Player of the Week on Monday, TSN.ca reports. The 23-year-old outfielder was 9-for-22 with four homers, four doubles, and six RBI over the period.

Our View:The rookie was only hitting .222 heading into the week, and his bat obviously caught fire. Joyce is likely to spend the rest of this season shuffling back and forth between Detroit and Triple-A Toledo, but he's shown some good pop in his brief major league time.
July 13, 2008
Matt Joyce hit a solo home run to center off Brian Bass in the eighth inning helping the Tiger defeat the Minnesota Twins 4-2 on Sunday afternoon.

Our View:It was Joyce's ninth homer of the season and his third this week.
June 29, 2008
Matt Joyce has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo, according to the AP. The team placed star outfielder Magglio Ordonez on the 15-day DL as an adjoining move.

Our View:Joyce displayed good power potential as he hit five home runs over 18 games, but he struggled more often than not, and held a .208 average in his previous stint with the Tigers this season. He does not merit fantasy consideration.
May 29, 2008
Matt Joyce has been sent down to Triple-A Toledo, according to MLive.com. As an adjoining move, the team recalled Clete Thomas. Manager Jim Leyland said, "We really like Joyce. He has a future, he did a good job, but if you're going to have someone sitting around, you'd rather have a little more speed. Thomas provides that."

Our View:Joyce displayed good power potential as he hit five homers over 18 games, but he struggled more often than not, and held a .208 average over 53 at-bats prior to being demoted.
May 22, 2008
Matt Joyce went 2-for-3 with two RBI in Thursday's 9-2 win over the Mariners. He hit a two-run homer in the game.

Our View:Joyce now has five homers and eight RBI over 13 games played this season. He should continue to see regular playing time in left field while Gary Sheffield serves as the DH.
May 20, 2008
Matt Joyce continues to receive playing time in the Tigers lineup. The left fielder is starting and hitting seventh tonight against Seattle and Carlos Silva.

Our View:Gary Sheffield has returned to the designated hitter role offering Joyce regular playing time.
May 15, 2008
Matt Joyce continued his hot hitting in the early going by hitting his third home run in his eighth major league game for the Tigers.

Our View:Joyce also knocked in three on the day and is hitting .292 marking him as a great AL Only play. The Tigers are running him out there every day and he has rewarded their faith in him by far outproducing the production they were getting from Jacques Jones.
May 14, 2008
Matt Joyce recorded another multi-hit effort on Tuesday night in KC. The Tigers outfielder hit a home run for the second straight finishing the game 2-for-4.

Our View:The prospect is batting .333 in his first 18 at-bats with two home runs and three RBI.
May 10, 2008
Only two Detroit players managed to post more than one hit against the Yankees today in the Tigers' 5-2 loss, one of them being OF Matt Joyce . Joyce went 2-for-4 at the plate, hitting his first home run of the year in the 1st inning.

Our View:Joyce, recently called up from Triple-A Toledo, is getting the opportunity to play while the team shops Jacque Jones (currently on assignment in Toledo). He hasn't done too much thus far, but today's performance shows the talent is there.
May 10, 2008
Matt Joyce is going to start in left field today against the Yankees, according to MLB.com. Gary Sheffield will serve as the DH to get Joyce on the field.

Our View:Joyce is 2-for-11 (.182) so far, with no homers and one RBI (over four games). He could use the practice with today's start.
May 5, 2008
Matthew Joyce, who was called up from Triple-A Toledo on Monday, is in the Tigers starting lineup against the Red Sox and Dice-K.

Our View:Joyce is playing right field and hitting seventh in the batting order.
May 5, 2008
Matthew Joyce has been called up from Triple-A Toledo, according to MLive.com. Struggling outfielder Jacque Jones has also been designated for assignment.

Our View:Joyce was hitting .299 at Toledo, with five homers and 21 RBI in 28 games. Jacque Jones had just one hit in his last 29 at-bats, and Joyce will seemingly provide better depth in the Tigers' outfield. His fantasy value will be limited in a reserve role.
April 18, 2008
Matthew Joyce hit his fifth home run of the season at Triple-A on Friday. He is now hitting .298-5-14 this season.

Our View:Joyce was not a great outfield prospect entering the season, but he is off to a fast start offensively. We probably should not hope for too much considering that he hit only .257-17-70 at Double-A last season, but his early performance should make the Tigers feel better about their depth.
