Player Notes
September 18, 2008
Al Reyes has been released by the Mets before he could even throw a pitch, according to the AP.

Our View:The Mets bullpen has struggled all year and I guess that they decided that Reyes couldn't help.
September 3, 2008
Al Reyes has been promoted to the Mets from Double-A, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:The 38-year-old reliever can be used as a closer, but will likely serve as a setup man with the Mets, limiting his fantasy value.
August 31, 2008
The Mets will add relievers Al Reyes and Ricardo Rincon when the roster expand on Monday, the New York Post reports.

Our View:Nothing like young, fresh blood, huh? Reyes and Rincon are both 38, and this news tells you how worried the Mets are about their bullpen.
August 20, 2008
The NY Post indicates the Mets have acquired Al Reyes, who was cut loose by the Rays.

Our View:The Mets have been looking for bullpen help after Billy Wagner went down, and were considering pulling a starter out of the rotation (namely John Maine) to use as a reliever. Reyes was disappointing in Tampa Bay this season, but will be an upgrade for New York. He could potentially push for saves, and is worth a look in deeper NL-only leagues.
August 18, 2008
Al Reyes has declined an assignment to Triple-A Durham and is now a free agent, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Reyes was disappointing this year, but he should be able to catch on with a team looking for right-handed relief help down the stretch.
August 9, 2008
Tampa Bay pitcher Al Reyes has been designated for assignment by the club, according to The Sports Network.

Our View:The Rays now have 10 days to place him on waivers, trade him or release him. He was of little importance in fantasy leagues, having thrown just 22.2 innings this year.
July 18, 2008
As anticipated, the Rays have activated reliever Al Reyes from the disabled list, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Reyes had been out since June 10 because of right shoulder tendinitis. Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said there no limitations on Reyes.
July 17, 2008
The Tampa Tribune reports that the Rays will activate Al Reyes from the disabled list tomorrow, as expected.

Our View:Reyes probably won't see many save opportunities because Troy Percival will activated soon. He will take the roster spot left vacant when Reid Brignac was optioned to Durham following Sunday’s game in Cleveland.
July 15, 2008
Prosecutors have dropped the criminal charges against Al Reyes, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Back in April, Tampa police accused Reyes of committing an affray after an incident at a South Tampa bar. Police said Reyes, who was celebrating his 38th birthday, became intoxicated and disruptive at 2:30 a.m. at the Hyde Park Cafe. Police accused him of picking a fight and spitting blood at patrons of the club. Reyes issued an apology following the incident.

Our View:Reyes can now put this matter behind him and focus on baseball. Speaking of which, he is expected to be activated from the DL on Friday.
July 14, 2008
Al Reyes is expected to be activated from the DL on Friday, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Manager Joe Maddon said there was a good chance he will be ready, following his bout with right shoulder tendinitis.

Our View:Reyes will be a welcome addition back to the Rays' pen, but won't hold much fantasy value in standard leagues as a setup man.
July 12, 2008
Al Reyes' shoulder felt good during his rehab outing with Single-A Vero Beach on Thursday, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He threw at 87 mph, and hit 89 mph a couple of times.

Our View:He'll throw again Sunday and Monday, and looks to be ready to return soon after the All-Star break.
July 11, 2008
Al Reyes pitched one scoreless rehab inning for Class A Vero Beach on Thursday.

Our View:Reyes should be ready to go following the All-Star break.
July 8, 2008
Al Reyes, who is recovering from right shoulder tendinitis, will begin a throwing program Tuesday with Single-A Vero Beach, according to the Tampa Tribune. Reyes will pitch Tuesday and Thursday before making back-to-back appearances on the weekend.

Our View:If all goes favorably without a setback, he should be set to rejoin the team July 17, which is the final day of the All-Star break and a scheduled workout day for the Rays.
July 5, 2008
Updating and earlier report, Al Reyes threw a simulated game on Saturday and the results were good, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:The plan is for Reyes to head out for some minor league work the next week or so with a target return date of right after the All-Star break.
July 5, 2008
Al Reyes will throw a simulated game on Saturday. He is on the DL due to right shoulder tendinitis. "Every time he goes out in the bullpen, he feels better," manager Joe Maddon tells the Tampa Tribune. "The recovery's better, he's not as sore. And he's starting to gain more confidence in the arm strength."

Our View:The reliever could be close to returning, but the Rays don't need to rush him. They've been getting wonderful work from other bullpen members. Reyes was the closer for much of 2007, but he doesn't have much value at this point.
June 30, 2008
Al Reyes, who is recovering from right shoulder tendinitis, is close to being ready for game action, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:He threw his second bullpen session in a three day span on Sunday, and could be sent out for some minor-league rehab appearances this week.
June 13, 2008
Al Reyes has landed back on the DL due to shoulder tendinitis, according to the Tampa Tribune. He previously spent time on the DL for the same ailment, and is going to make sure he "gets it right for the rest of the season." The DL move opens up a spot for Troy Percical.

Our View:Shoulder problems are tricky, and he could be out for a while this time. Grant Balfour and Gary Glover will remain in the bullpen.
May 14, 2008
The Rays activated Al Reyes from the 15-day DL on Wednesday, the Tampa Tribune confirms. Reyes had been out since April 14 due to a right shoulder impingement.

Our View:The Rays currently boast the second-best bullpen in the AL despite Reyes' struggles earlier this year. Reyes closed games in 2007, but it may take more than a Troy Percival injury to get Al back into that role this year.
May 13, 2008
Al Reyes said he felt fine following an extended spring start on Monday, and could be activated on Tuesday, according to the Star Tribune. He is recovering from right shoulder inpingement.

Our View:The setup man could return this week, but may not be rushed back into action, as the Rays' pen has held up well so far this season.
May 6, 2008
Al Reyes played catch from 130 feet on Tuesday and mixed in some curveballs. He had no discomfort in his right shoulder, the Tampa Tribune reports. Reyes will throw off a mound on Friday. The veteran is on the DL due to a shoulder impingement.

Our View:The Rays might not want to bring Reyes back. Their bullpen has been outstanding. We're joking with that first line, but they have little reason to rush his recovery.
May 2, 2008
Al Reyes isn't quite ready to be activated from the DL, according to the Tampa Tribune. The veteran is coming back from a shoulder impingement.

Our View:It's not clear when Reyes will return, but he appears close.
May 2, 2008
Al Reyes threw 22 pitches in an extended spring training game Thursday and if all feels well this morning he could rejoin the Rays tonight, or Saturday at the latest, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Reyes has been on the DL with a shoulder impingement.

Our View:Reyes will return to a setup role with the Rays, but with the way Troy Percival is pitching, he won't get any save opportunities anytime soon.
April 29, 2008
Al Reyes, on the DL with a shoulder impingement, will not return to the team Thursday as expected, according to MLB.com. He felt good after his 12-pitch outing Monday at Single-A Vero Beach but will need one more appearance. "Al Reyes threw well in Vero but still feels as though he needs one more time out," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "We're going to give that to him on Thursday. He's going to pitch in [an extended Spring Training game] on Thursday, again, just to fulfill his own feeling about how he feels. So we respect that, and that was fine."

Our View:The Rays will re-evaluate Reyes' situation on Friday. It sounds as if there's a good chance he'll be activated this weekend.
April 26, 2008
Al Reyes (shoulder) struck out two and pitched a scoreless inning for Single-A Vero Beach on Saturday. He could come off the DL on Thursday.

Our View:He will try to reclaim the setup role when he returns.
April 25, 2008
Al Reyes, who is recovering from right shoulder impingement, threw a 30-pitch bullpen session in St. Petersburg with no problems, and is likely to be activated from the DL when eligible on Wednesday, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:He will compete to regain his role as the Rays' setup man when he returns. He could rack up a favorable strikeout count, but not many saves. His fantasy value will be limited.
April 22, 2008
Al Reyes played catch with no discomfort and threw all the way up to 120 feet on Tuesday, as he continues to recover from his right shoulder impingement, according to MLB.com. Manager Joe Maddon speculated that Reyes could be back in the bullpen by April 30.

Our View:This is good news, and he would compete to regain his role as the Rays' setup man when he returns. He could rack up a favorable strikeout count, but not many saves. His fantasy value will be limited.
April 16, 2008
Al Reyes has been placed on the 15-day DL with a right shoulder impingement, this according to the St. Petersberg Times. LH Kurt Birkins was activated to take the open roster spot.

Our View:Dan Wheeler now becomes the main setup man and the obvious choice to step into the closers role if something were to happen to Troy Percival.
April 11, 2008
Al Reyes picked up his first victory of the season mere hours after being arrested for an altercation at a night spot. True to their word Reyes was available on this night and he picked up win by pitching two thirds of an inning for the Rays.
April 11, 2008
Al Reyes has been arrested, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Police stated that Reyes was arrested early this morning, as the reliever was drunk and disruptive after falling down, and picking a fight and spitting blood at the patrons of a popular Hyde Park night spot. Team officials are looking into the situation. The setup man is off to a poor start with a 13.50 ERA over 2.2 innings, and this drops his fantasy stock even further.
