The Providence Journal announced that the Red Sox awarded Daniel Bard as their minor league pitcher of the year. He combined to go 5-1 with a 1.51 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 77.2 innings in 46 relief appearances at Greenville and Portland

Our View:The next excellent Boston reliever is not far away from being major league ready. The Red Sox have a few aging arms in the pen that Bard could probably effectively replace. However, he is not guaranteed to see Major League action in 2009.

Daniel Bard could be promoted to Double-A Portland, according to the Providence Journal. The Red Sox selected the right-hander as their second pick (28th overall) in the 2006 draft.

Our View:The reliever is 1-0 with a 0.67 ERA in 14 appearances at Greenville, with 42 strikeouts over 27 innings.

The Red Sox plan to move Daniel Bard to the bullpen for the first time in his career, according to the Boston Herald. "I’m excited about it," Bard said. The Red Sox's first-round draft pick in 2006 worked as a starter through high school, his years at North Carolina and in the minors, but he worked in relief during the Hawaiian Winter League this offseason. Bard will likely begin the year in the minors developing his relief game.
