Updating a previous report, Collin Balester has been shut down with a strain on the left side of his body, according to MLBlogs.com.

Our View:Balester will be shut down for two weeks before participating in any baseball activities. However, by the time he is ready to pitch again, the season will already be over. In seven starts this year, he went 1-4 with a 6.82 ERA.

Collin Balester has been shut down for the remainder of the 2009 season by the Nationals, according to a report at ESPN. Balester finished the 2009 with a 1-4 record.

Our View:The Nats just want to limit Balester's innings for this season, so there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with him. He struggled in his last three starts, and the team felt he may have hit a wall due to his innings load this year.

Collin Balester was roughed up for four earned runs on five hits over five innings in Monday's 7-1 loss to the Brewers at Nationals Park. He had three walks with six strikeouts.

Our View:Balester has taken a loss in each of his last three starts, and is 1-4 for the season. He allowed four or more earned runs in three of his last four starts as well.

Collin Balester had a nightmare start on Wednesday as the Nationals fell to the Rockies 5-4. Balester went 1.1 innings and allowed three runs on three hits while walking five and striking out one.

Our View:Not good for Balester tonight, and his ERA is now at an astronomical 6.75 on the season. He should obviously not be considered for fantasy duty, but he shouldn't be this bad in the rest of his starts.
August 13, 2009
Collin Balester was no match for Bronson Arroyo and the Reds on Thursday night, allowing five runs in five innings as Arroyo and the Reds mowed down the Nats 7-0.

Our View:Balester has now given up ten runs in his last two starts (just 9.1 innings), and isn't a great option in any format.
