Matt LaPorta has not gotten a hit in four straight VWL games and his average has fallen to .164. The outfielder has 22 strikeouts and six walks in 67 at-bats.

Our View:LaPorta was probably the best prospect the Indians received in the CC Sabathia trade. He did not play very well in Triple-A after the deal and is off to a rough start in the VWL. It appears he could still be at least a year away, but expect him to get a look in spring training.

Manager Eric Wedge commented on top prospect Matt LaPorta, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. When Wedge was asked if LaPorta has a chance to make the 2009 roster out of spring training, he answered, "I don't think he will do that out of spring training. But from what I've heard, he will get our attention."

Our View:He was the prized prospect acquired in the deal that shipped CC Sabathia to Milwaukee, and will work on furthering his development in the Venezualan Winter League this off-season.
September 7, 2008
LaPorta will play in the Venezuelan Winter League this off-season, according to The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View:LaPorta was the centerpiece of the CC Sabathia trade, and he could compete for a spot on the Indians' roster during spring training, 2009.
August 25, 2008
Indians outfielder Matt LaPorta will not be among the Indians September call-ups, according to Indians.com.

Our View:Forget about getting a one-month boost for your fantasy team, though LaPorta is still dealing with the concussion he got at the Olympics.
August 19, 2008
Matt LaPorta appears to be fine after he was beaned in the head during Monday's game against Team China. "He had no symptoms of post-concussion syndrome when he woke up Tuesday morning," Indians head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff informs the Cleveland Plain Dealer. LaPorta does have some soreness on the left side of his head and neck.

Our View:It sounds like LaPorta could come back during the Olympics, which is an excellent sign. The top-notch prospect could be up in the majors come September.
August 18, 2008
Matt LaPorta was taken to a hospital for precautionary tests after getting beaned in the head by a pitch Monday. All of the tests came back negative, according to MLB.com.

Our View:LaPorta is listed as day-to-day, but we would be shocked if he played anymore during the Olympics.
August 18, 2008
Matt LaPorta has been hospitalized after being struck on the helmet by a pitch Monday during the United States' win over China in the Olympics, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Indians' GM Mark Shapiro said, "He never lost consciousness. He's been held for observation. He will have spent at least a day in the hospital."

Our View:Shapiro would not speculate whether or not LaPorta will resume playing the Olympics. LaPorta was the prized prospect acquired in the deal that sent CC Sabathia to Milwaukee.
July 16, 2008
Matt LaPorta, recently involved in the big CC Sabathia deal, has been named to the United States Olympic baseball team, according to Baseball America.

Our View:Another big name that was tabbed for the squad was the Cardinals Colby Rasmus. Click on the link above to view the whole squad.

Matt LaPorta, the key piece in the CC Sabathia trade, went 3-for-6 in a doubleheader in his first action with the Indians Double-A affiliate, the Akron Aeros, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View:LaPorta can flat-out hit, and it would not be a surprise to see him get big league action in September.
July 8, 2008
Power-hitting prospect Matt LaPorta is moving to left field, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He will report to Double-A Akron following his acquisition from the Brewers.

Our View:This move makes sense as he is average defensively, and his arm won't be tested as much in left field. He may even end up at first base when he ultimately gets called up to the Indians.
July 7, 2008
Top outfield prospect Matt LaPorta was the headliner of the Brewers' package in the CC Sabathia trade, according to the AP.

Our View:The Indians coveted a power-hitting outfielder, and LaPorta should fill their need. He hit .288 with 20 homers and 66 RBIs over 84 games for Double-A Huntsville.
July 6, 2008
The AP reports that top-prospect Matt LaPorta was sent to the Cleveland Indians, along with other prospects, for Cleveland ace, C.C. Sabathia.

Our View:LaPorta was hitting .288 with 20 home runs and 66 RBI in 84 games at Double-A Huntsville.
June 27, 2008
Matt LaPorta has been named to the U.S. team at the annual Futures Game that takes place on All-Star weekend.

Our View:LaPorta has an OPS of 1.009 for the Huntsville Stars, Milwaukee's Double-A farm club. He has 19 home runs on the year, and is averaging one every 14.2 at-bats. He is an outstanding prospect and someone to keep an eye on if he continues to hit.
April 25, 2008
Matt LaPorta went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs for Double-A Huntsville on Thursday.

Our View:Milwaukee’s elite outfield prospect now has six home runs this season, five of which have come since April 19. He is also sporting a nine-game hitting streak.
April 21, 2008
Matt LaPorta was named the Southern League Hitter of the Week on Monday, this according to MinorLeagueBaseball.com.

Our View:LaPorta, the 7th pick in last June's amateur draft, was 10-for-25 with two HR and eight RBI on the week.
April 20, 2008
Matt LaPorta hit his second home run in as many games for Double-A Huntsville on Sunday.

Our View:LaPorta, Milwaukee’s top pick in the 2007 draft, is hitting .286-3-14 this season. He was already on the radar of many fantasy owners entering this season, but the Brewers can afford to bring him up slowly with the depth that they have shown in the outfield this season.
April 4, 2008
Matt LaPorta is off to a strong start in his first stop at Double-A ball. He went 2-for-4 with a grand slam in a win over the Mississippi Braves. LaPorta, 23, is in his first full pro season, and unless there's an injury, he'll be working to earn a move up to Triple-A and potentially a September call-up.
