Player Notes
November 11, 2008
Mike Aviles has been named the Royals' Player of the Year for 2008, according to MLB.com.

Our View:The rookie shortstop earned the honor by hitting .327 over 101 games, with 27 doubles, four triples, 10 homers, 51 RBI, eight stolen bases, and 68 runs scored. He should make an even bigger impact in 2009.
October 17, 2008
Mike Aviles has been selected as one of the finalists for the American League Players Choice Outstanding Rookie Award, according to the Kansas City Star. The other finalists are Evan Longoria and Alexei Ramirez.

Our View:Longoria is almost certain to win, but in terms of the biggest impact made relative to draft day cost in the fantasy world, Aviles is the clear cut winner given his massive performance for a waiver-wire pick up a the shortstop position (.327-10-51-68-8 in 416 AB).
September 18, 2008
In the Royals' 12-0 win over the Mariners Mike Aviles hit his first home run in 172 at-bats. The homer was Aviles eighth of the year.

Our View:This has been a surprise year for the 27 year old rookie who is hitting .320 in 93 games and might even get a few votes for AL ROY. He will probably not win the award over Evan Longoria but he sure has put his name on the fantasy map for 2009.
September 4, 2008
Though it is doubtful he wins the award, Kansas City's Mike Aviles should be in consideration with Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria for AL Rookie of the Year, according to the Kansas City Star. "If I’m even mentioned in that discussion, it’s a good thing," Aviles said.

Our View:Aviles won't win the award over Longoria or Chicago's Alexi Ramirez, but he has had a terrific season, hitting .333 in 76 games. At 27, he is old for a rookie, and there is a reason he took so long to arrive in the big leagues. Fantasy owners should keep that in mind during drafts next season when thinking about taking him.
August 31, 2008
Mike Aviles underwent X-rays after Sunday's game. The results showed only a bruise on his right index finger, the Kansas City Star reports. The shortstop could be back on Tuesday.

Our View:That's excellent news for the rookie shortstop. We still wonder if he'll be ready after the off-day on Monday, but fantasy owners should be able to count on him moving forward.
August 31, 2008
Mike Aviles had to leave the Royals game against the Tigers in the seventh after getting hit in the hand with a pitch while he was attempting to swing, according to The Sports Network.

Our View:Aviles has broken through this season, offering fantasy owners a .334 batting average, seven home runs and 38 RBI.
August 29, 2008
Mike Aviles went 3-for-5 with an RBI in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Tigers at Comerica Park. All three of his hits were singles.

Our View:He fared well at the plate but was not as successful in the field, as he made his eighth error (throwing) of the season.
August 22, 2008
Mike Aviles went 3-for-5 and scored a run, but it wasn't enough, as the Royals were downed by the Detroit Tigers 4-3.

Our View:Aviles' batting average is now at .333, and for the month of August it is .354. He doesn't walk a lot, so his OBP is not as high as it could be, but overall he should be a major asset to fantasy squads.
August 20, 2008
The Royals found another frustrating night at the park this evening, falling 8-5 to the Cleveland Indians despite the efforts of leadoff rookie shortstop Mike Aviles. Aviles went 3-for-4 with his 22nd double of the season, also adding his fifth stolen base, totaling three RBIs and two runs scored.

Our View:Aviles is now hittign .326 on the season, having hit .330 in July followed by a .304 effort in August. His run production is down, but such is life as a leadoff man on a team that lacks offensive prowess.
August 10, 2008
Royals shortstop Mike Aviles had a very rough day, and despite his team getting a win over Minnesota, he went 0-for-6.

Our View:Not a good day for Aviles, but he was hitting .455 in the month of August, so a cool down was coming one way or another. He is still an excellent resource for a fantasy team in the middle infield.
August 8, 2008
Mike Aviles had four more hits on Friday night to boost his average to .341 on the season.

Our View:Aviles is now 13-for-26 (.500) the past six games as the leadoff hitter for the Royals, and stretching back a bit further he has three or more hits in a game five times in 10 games. What a waiver-wire pickup.
August 3, 2008
Mike Aviles continued to mash on Sunday as he went 4-for-4 including his seventh home run of the season for the Royals.

Our View:Aviles was a name that likely wasn't called in a single mixed league draft this season, but he has hit like the second coming of Nomar Garciaparra since being called up to the Royals with a .340-7-31 line over 206 AB.
August 2, 2008
Shortstop Mike Aviles was named the Royals player of the month for July, according to the Kansas City Star. He hit .330 with 12 extra base hits during the month.

Our View:Aviles remains a very sound fantasy option, as he is hitting .325 on the season with six home runs and 28 RBI.
July 30, 2008
Mike Aviles had three hits from the leadoff spot for the Royals on Wednesday to raise his average to .325.

Our View:This has been a pretty amazing run for a guy who wasn't on anyone's radar at the start of the season. Aviles continues to impress and shows little sign of slowing down with a .363 average in the month of July (55 AB).
July 25, 2008
Royals shortstop Mike Aviles has struggled in his last few games, and has just one hit in his last ten at-bats.

Our View:Aviles just came off a hot streak, so a small section of games where he struggles is to be expected.
July 21, 2008
Mike Aviles quietly extended his hitting streak to 10 games on Sunday against the White Sox, according to the KC Star. Manager Trey Hillman said, "He’s showing the ability to make the adjustments that they’re trying to make to him. When he’s had bad at-bats and poor plate appearances because of swinging out of the strike zone, or not being balanced on his swings in the strike zone, he’s had the ability to fix that quicker, within the same game, even."

Our View:He extented the streak to 10 by going 3-for-5. He has a firm grasp on the starting job at shortstop, and Tony Pena will remain stuck on the bench. Scoop Aviles up in AL-only leagues if still dangling on the waiver wire.
July 16, 2008
Mike Aviles has more than ably replaced the struggling Tony Pena at the shortstop position as he has hit .317 in his 139 AB this season with 21 runs and 21 RBI in 35 games of action.

Our View:With numbers like that not only is Aviles a tremendous option in AL only leagues, he has actually played himself into consideration in deep mixed leagues as well. If you are a Tony Pena owner who is holding out hope of a rebound, well, he may never get the chance with Aviles hitting like this.
July 8, 2008
Mike Aviles appears to be busting out of his slump. He is 7-for-12 in his last two games.

Our View:Aviles almost appears to be an all or nothing player. He is an intriguing player to watch because of the power he has shown at his position. We would like to see some more consistency from him.
July 3, 2008
Mike Aviles was out of the lineup for the first time in 24 games as Kansas City was playing the fourth and final game of a road series in Baltimore. Tony Pena started at shortstop.

Our View:The ookie shortstop was hitless in his last two games and made some costly mistakes defensively on Tuesday night. Ultimately costing the team a win.
June 27, 2008
It's official according to All Sports Radio 810 in Kansas City, the Royals coaching staff announced on Thursday that Mike Aviles will be the starting shortstop for the rest of the season, barring something unforeseen.

Our View:In 20 games, Aviles is hitting .333 with three home runs, nine doubles, a triple and 14 RBI. Defensively, Aviles is not Tony Pena Jr., but he's twice the hitter which seems to be a trade off that skipper Trey Hillman is willing to make.
June 26, 2008
Mike Aviles is opening up all kinds of eyes in Kansas City with his hot stick, according to MLB.com. Aviles is hitting .347 with 14 RBI in 19 games and has become a regular in the lineup. "The bottom line is the game is the ultimate evaluator," GM Dayton Moore said. "It doesn't matter what a scout says, it doesn't matter what a front-office person says, it matters what the player thinks of himself and how the player is performing. It's as simple as that."

Our View:With Tony Pena Jr. producing a hit about as frequently as a solar eclipse, and with Esteban German barely hitting any better, Aviles has been thriving with playing time. He is certainly gone in AL Only leagues, and he actually deserves serious considering as a middle infield play in mixed leagues while he is this hot.
June 24, 2008
The Royals continue to enjoy the work of rookie second baseman Mike Aviles , his bat producing valuable offense in tonight's 7-3 win over Colorado. Aviles went 2-for-3 with a walk, posting one RBI and two runs scored on the night.

Our View:Aviles started getting regular playing time on June 6th and has hit .354 since, now touting 14 RBIs on the month.
June 22, 2008
Mike Aviles stole his second base of the season and knocked in three runs for the Royals on Sunday.

Our View:With Tony Pena and Esteban German failing to hit their weight at the plate, the Royals turned to Aviles who has been spectacular hitting .328 with 12 RBI in 16 games as he has locked down a spot in the lineup on a daily basis.
June 17, 2008
Mike Aviles hit a solo homer in the eighth inning of Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Cardinals Tuesday. Aviles is now batting .333 with three dingers in 42 at-bats since his recall. His three homers have come over the last five games.

Our View:Aviles has been named the team's starter at short and is proving to be a nice option in AL-only play. Mixed leaguers should take note of what he's done, as well.
June 15, 2008
Mike Aviles, who collected four hits and four runs as the Royals beat the Diamondbacks 12-3 on Saturday, is hitting in the the No. 2 spot for the second straight game.

Our View:Aviles is the new starting shortstop for the Royals, and while he doesn't have the defensive attributes of Tony Pena, he's much more of a threat at the plate.
June 14, 2008
Mike Aviles has been named as the new starting shortstop for the Royals, but tonight he played both short and second and got the offense going in a major way, posting tall numbers in the Royals dominating 12-3 win over Arizona. Aviles went 4-for-5 with two doubles and his second home run of the season, totaling two RBIs and four runs scored in the effort.

Our View:Aviles is going to be getting a ton of playing time in the weeks ahead and is now giving indication that he is up to the challenge.
June 14, 2008
The Kansas City Royals have inserted Mike Aviles as their starting shortstop this evening, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Aviles started at short for the ninth straight time in Saturday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Not only that, he was elevated into the No. 2 spot in the batting order. Tony Pena, the shortstop displaced by Aviles, had a .155 average and is working to patch his hitting deficiencies.
June 6, 2008
Mike Aviles started for the Royals on Friday night at shortstop and responded with a pair of doubles and a run scored in three at-bats.

Our View:For whatever reason the Royals won't give Aviles a shot at regular playing time, but perhaps that will change after tonight's performance.
June 3, 2008
Mike Aviles started last Thursday at shortstop but hasn't played since. The position has been a revolving door lately for the Royals, but manager Trey Hillman sees Aviles as a backup for the time being. "Just as an extra for us. Not to depreciate his value but that's what he is for right now," Hillman said on MLB.com.

Our View:Aviles was batting .338 with 21 doubles, six triples and 10 home runs for Triple-A Omaha at the time of his recall, so he obviously brings more to the table offensively than Pena. He could be worth eying in fantasy if he gains more playing time.
May 30, 2008
Mike Aviles was called up from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday to replace the demoted Billy Butler. Aviles made his debut on Thursday night playing shortstop and batting ninth in the order.

Our View:Aviles bat earned him the call-up. The rookie was hitting .338 with 21 doubles, six triples and 10 home runs on the farm.
May 28, 2008
Mike Aviles hit a pair of home runs for Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday, giving him 10 this season.

Our View:At age 27, Aviles does not seem like a great major league prospect, but he has solid contact ability and has been able to produce for the last few years. He could still have a utility role in his future.
May 20, 2008
Mike Aviles is hitting well at Triple-A Omaha, according to MLB.com. He recently hit a grand slam, which was his seventh homer of the season, to go along with a .345 batting average.

Our View:The shortstop could make an impact with the Royals, but Tony Pena is too good defensively to get pushed aside for a starting job in the near future.
