Second baseman Matt Antonelli has been sidelined due to a right knee/leg injury, and the Padres staff is struggling to alleviate the pain. The issue is just below his knee, and he has received three cortisone shots. "Before I got the second cortisone shot, the doctor looked at me and said that in his 20 years of sports medicine he had never seen anyone with this injury," Antonelli tells MLB.com. The last shot appears to have worked better, but he remains at extended spring training in Arizona.

Our View:Antonelli had an awful 2008 at Triple-A Portland, and we were hoping he could get back on track this season. He is talented and may still turn things around. This injury development is frustrating, though.
September 15, 2008
Matt Antonelli went 2-for-4 with two runs and a two-run homer in Monday's win over the Rockies. It was the first long ball of the second baseman's career.

Our View:Antonelli had a nightmare year at Triple-A, but the Padres are still taking a look at him as their long-term second baseman. We expect him to play quite a bit down the stretch, although fantasy owners shouldn't trust him.

Matt Antonelli made his first major league start on Monday night and went 1-for-4 at the plate.

Our View:Given that the team recently let go Tad Iguchi, Antonelli could be in line for some serious playing time in September at second base, that is if he proves he can hit in the majors after struggling to do so in Triple-A this season (.215/.335/.322).

The Padres will call up second baseman Matt Antonelli and pitcher Wade LeBlanc on Monday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports,

Our View:Antonelli and LeBlanc were the Padres No. 2 and 4 prospects heading into 2008. Neither player has performed very well at Triple-A, although both Antonelli (.290) and LeBlanc (3.55 ERA) showed better stuff this August. Fantasy owners shouldn't get too excited.

The Padres are working prospect Matt Antonelli out in center field. "I've taken more balls in the outfield in the last two days than I've taken in my life," Antonelli said in the San Diego Union-Tribune. "They just called me and said we'd like to get a look at you in center." The Padres traded for Jim Edmonds this offseason, but Edmonds is injury-prone and has just one year remaining on his contract. "It was good to get out there," Antonelli said. "The more I can play the outfield, the more balls I see, the better. We'll just see how it goes."
