Jason Motte picked up his ninth hold of the season while throwing 1.2 innings, striking out three, and not allowing a single base runner.

Our View:Motte only held the closer's job for a portion of the season's first week, but he has developed into an effective middle reliever and he is currently second in the NL in holds.

Jason Motte is expected to pitch outside the ninth inning in his next few appearances, according to MLB.com. "One of the things we do need to do is get Jason some work," manager Tony La Russa said. "So I wouldn't be surprised if, whether it's today or tomorrow, he pitches sometimes other than the ninth. [We're] not going to hold him back when he needs work."

Our View:Motte struggled in his first two appearances, and the Cards have used Dennys Reyes and Kyle McClellan to pick up saves this week. Don't be surprised if Ryan Franklin is next.
April 6, 2009
Jason Motte blew his first save opportunity of 2009 as the Cardinals fell 6-4 to the Pirates on Monday. He entered the game in the ninth inning with a 4-2 lead, but then surrendered four hits and four earned runs while recording one strikeout.

Our View:Tony LaRussa never has displayed much confidence in Motte as a closer, and today's game probably jeopardized his role going forward. Ryan Franklin could threaten to take over the job in the near future, or the team may elect to call up Chris Perez from Triple-A. Motte is probably still considered the team's closer, but his short leash just got shorter.

Jason Motte threw a scoreless ninth inning against Triple-A Memphis on Saturday. He allowed no base runners while striking out one.

Our View:Motte appears ready to close for the Cardinals. He has been lights out since being called up for the team in late 2008. A strong spring won him the job, but he will likely be on a short leash with manager Tony LaRussa.
March 25, 2009
Jason Motte has nailed down a save in four of his last five outings in spring action and is the leading contender, but the Cardinals intend to head into opening day without naming a closer, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Pitching coach Dave Duncan said, "Even if we, in our minds, have that person designated, I do not think we are going to publicly say that, and I do not think we are going to tell the individual. Let him establish himself. We will create the situation for him to pitch, and if he establishes himself then he will close. If he does not, then he will not."

Our View:Motte seems to be the most draft-worthy among the Cardinals' candidates for the closer's role. He is worth targeting as a flier for mixed leagues.
