According to the Post Dispatch, third base prospect David Freese underwent surgery Tuesday on his ailing ankle.

Our View:The surgery wasn't serious but Freese will still miss a couple of weeks. He was arguably the Cardinals best minor leaguer last season and was the favorite to start at third this season in place of Troy Glaus, but a car accident in January derailed his spring. He injured his ankle in the crash and was never fully healthy afterwards. He'll likely spend the rest of the season in Triple-A and could get passed on the depth chart by hitting machine Brett Wallace.

David Freese has been optioned to Triple-A Memphis by the Cardinals, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Freese was given a chance to start at third base, but he failed to impress with three hits over 19 at-bats. Joe Thurston and Brian Barden will platoon at the postion.

David Freese is in danger of being sent down to the minors with the Cardinals expected to call up a pitcher before Sunday night's game against the Cubs, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I think we're in a difficult spot with Freese," manager Tony La Russa said. "It's a pretty easy comment to make. He's a young guy. When he's played, he's played all right. He doesn't have much to show for it."

Our View:With Troy Glaus undergoing shoulder surgery before the season and out for an indefinite amount of time, some fantasy owners had tabbed Freese as a deep sleeper given that he was Glaus' expected replacement at third, but it hasn't materialized the way Freese would have liked. He's struggled at the plate, hitting just .158 through 22 plate appearances, while Joe Thurston and Brian Barden have formed an effective platoon. There's clearly no reason to own Freese at this point.

David Freese started his first game as a Major Leaguer on Wednesday and was 2-for-4 in his debut with a run scored. His first big league hit was an infield single.

Our View:Freese played well Wednesday. Well enough to play tomorrow, but who knows if he will. The way LaRussa tinkers with his lineups, there's no way of telling how many at-bats Freese will have. And it's hard to gauge his fantasy value until you know the extent of his playing time.

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, David Freese will get the start at third base for the Cardinals on Wednesday night.

Our View:Freese was expected to be the everyday third baseman, but Tony LaRussa's ego, lineup tinkering and micromanaging have kept him out thus far. Freese could go 4-for-4 with four home runs tonight, and still sit tomorrow. It's just whatever Tony feels at the moment and whether he's making a statement to the St. Louis media.
