The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Pirates' prospect Jimmy Barthmaier will have major reconstructive surgery on his elbow and miss the entire 2009 season.

Our View:He was originally expected to be out for a month, but it turned out Tommy John surgery was needed and now his season has quickly come to an end. Last season in three starts he had a 10.45 ERA and 2.32 WHIP. Maybe the surgery will lead to better stats down the road.

Jimmy Barthmaier will be on the shelf for a month while recovering from a strained flexor mass (right elbow), according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:He was working in the rotation at Triple-A Indianapolis prior to going down with the injury. Yoslan Herrera was promoted from Double-A Altoona to take his place.

Jimmy Barthmaier left his start for Triple-A Indianapolis after walking the first two batters because of an elbow injury, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Director of Player Development Kyle Stark confirmed the injury but said there had been no diagnosis yet of its severity.

Our View:We'll update you on Barthmaier's status when more is know.

Jimmy Barthmaier has been assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis by the Pirates, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:He did not fare well in spring action, and held a dismal 2.32 WHIP over 10.1 innings (three starts) with the club in 2008.
March 6, 2009
Jimmy Barthmaier was shelled for six earned runs in less than two innings Friday in Pittsburgh's 8-5 loss to Tampa Bay.

Our View:The 25-year-old Barthmaier may have just written his own ticket to AAA Indianapolis this season.
