Player Notes
September 26, 2008
Chris Volstad only allowed one run (not earned) on five hits over six innings in Friday's 6-1 win over the Mets at Shea Stadium, with three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Volstad has pitched great in September, as he allowed two or less earned runs in four of his five starts in the month.
September 21, 2008
Chris Volstad fell to 5-4 on Sunday though he permitted just three runs, two earned, to the Phillies. Vosltad allowed six hits and two walks over five innings while striking out three.

Our View:Over his first 14 major league appearances, Vosltad owns a 3.10 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP in 78.1 innings in what has to be classified as a wonderful first exposure to the big leagues. Still, he has some work to do as his K/9 mark of 5.52 and his K/BB mark of 1.45 could certainly use some work if he wants to maintain this level of effectiveness long term.
September 16, 2008
Chris Volstad was brilliant Tuesday, holding the Astros to one run on four hits while striking out four over eight innings in the Marlins' 5-1 win.

Our View:The rookie has been inconsistent, but you can't argue with a 3.07 ERA over 13 outings (12 starts).
September 14, 2008
Chris Volstad will likely take his regular turn in the rotation the next two weeks even with his innings pitched count rising, according to the Marlins Official Website.

Our View:Volstad will likely make two more starts this season. He has racked up 156.1 innings this season, this after 168 last year, so he clearly isn't in any type of danger zone in terms of overuse.
September 10, 2008
Chris Volstad was hit on his leg on Tuesday night, but on Wednesday the extent of his injury was revealed as merely a red welt on his leg, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Our View:Vosltad figures to be able to make his next start without issue. Given that he has posted a 3.31 ERA in his 12 appearances this season, that is music to his fantasy owners ears.
September 9, 2008
With their prized pitching prospect Chris Volstad on the mound the Marlins took no chances and removed him after Volstad was struck by a ball in the lower right leg by a ball hit by Carlos Ruiz. Volstad was making his 11th start, according to Marlins.com.

Our View:Volstad was the Marlins first round pick in 2005 and the Marlins wanted to take no chances.
August 29, 2008
Chris Volstad only allowed one earned run on five hits over 6.1 innings in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Mets, with three walks and five strikeouts. He left the game with a two-run lead, and had to settle for a no decision rather than a win in his strong performance.

Our View:He only lost one decision over his last five starts, and should remain penciled into lineups in NL-only leagues heading into the final month of the season.
August 17, 2008
- The Marlins were trying to keep the Cubs in striking distance but failed to do so, giving up eight runs in the top of the 7th to fall 9-2, wasting a respectable effort from rookie RHP Chris Volstad. Volstad went six innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:Volstad walked with no decision as the relief support lost what would have been his third consecutive victory. Over that span, Volstad has allowed just five earned runs on 14 hits. He hasn't surrendered a homer since July 26th, the only home run he has given up this season.
August 12, 2008
Chris Volstad, who has four quality starts under his belt since his recall, faces a very good hitting St. Louis lineup tonight. Volstad's peripherals (6.42 K rate and 4.01 BB rate) are a poor match for the Cards' .352 on-base percentage -- third highest in the majors.

Our View:Don't get too excited about the rookie's last start against Philly, as he walked four while striking out only three in six innings of work. Throw in the fact that the Marlins' rookie has a 3.7 HR:FB ratio when the league average is nearly 10 percent and you have the makings of regression to the mean.
August 7, 2008
Chris Volstad hurled six scoreless innings, with only three hits allowed, in Thursday's 3-0 win over the Phillies. He also registered three strikeouts and four walks.

Our View:Volstad claimed his third win of the season, and trimmed his ERA to 2.67. He should remain active in NL-only leagues.
August 4, 2008
The Marlins intend to work on rookie hurler Chris Volstad's delivery, according to the Miami Herald. He looked vulnerable during his start Friday, as the Rockies stole three bases against him, and the Marlins want to speed up his delivery. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said, "He's got to speed it up a little bit. He is about a 1.3 seconds to the plate, and that's fine, but sometimes he gets up to 1.6 or 1.7. It's all learning. It's all experience. He's a very, very smart kid. I think he will learn to be quicker to the plate with no problem."

Our View:The Marlins will be careful with their adjustments, however. They don't want to hurry him up too much, with the risk of putting pressure on his arm.
August 1, 2008
Chris Volstad was all over the map on Friday as he allowed eight hits, walked three, struck out six and allowed five runs (four earned) in five innings against the Rockies.

Our View:Volsted just didn't have it on this night, though he still sports a 3.25 ERA through 27.2 innings this season. Youngster often struggle with control, so don't go throwing in the towel quite yet with this young phenom.
July 26, 2008
The Marlins hung tight with the Cubs thanks to a strong performance from RHP Chris Volstad , getting the 3-2 win in the 12th inning. Volstad went six to allow two runs (both earned) on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: Volstad gets no decision, but his ERA, standing at 2.38, shows just what kind of season he is enjoying. The offense came too late today, but the end result is what matters.
July 21, 2008
Chris Volstad worked six innings against the Braves on Monday. He allowed six hits and three runs, walked three, struck out three, and took the first loss of his career. Volstad is 2-1 with a 2.16 ERA.

Our View:Volstad was much more impressive in his previous start, but you still have to like what this 21-year-old showed on Monday. He'll probably have plenty of ups and downs as the season plays out.
July 11, 2008
In his first career start with the Marlins, Chris Volstad nearly went the distance on Friday in Los Angeles. The lone run scored came in the bottom of the ninth when Russell Martin singled to center with two outs, scoring Delwyn Young. He struck out six, walked one and allowed four hits. Kevin Gregg came on for the save as the Marlins won 3-1.

Our View:Not bad for a 21-year-old. This kind of start might signal that he's the real deal. The Marlins feel he is one of the best pitchers to come thru the organization in a long time, and that should not be taken lightly.
July 11, 2008
Chris Volstad is set to make his first career start with the Marlins tonight against the Dodgers, according to the Miami Herald. He said, "I always thought I would make it to the majors. There was never a doubt in my mind." President of baseball operations Larry Beinfest added, "You're looking at what could be the start of maybe a very productive major-league career, and that's fun."

Our View:Volstad hurled two scoreless innings in his Marlins' debut, and is worth taking a shot on in NL-only leagues tonight if you need help at the position.
July 6, 2008
In his major league debut, Chris Volstad picked up the win by throwing two scoreless innings at Coors Field on Sunday.

Our View:Volstad walked two and gave up two hits. The Marlins have ran an extraordinary amount of relievers back-and-forth from the minors this season and one has to wonder how long Volstad will stick around.
July 6, 2008
21-year old hurler Christopher Volstad has been called up from Double-A Carolina, according to MLB.com. He was the 16th overall pick in the 2005 draft. The team optioned lefty reliever Taylor Tankersley to Triple-A Albuquerque, as the corresponding move.

Our View:He will initially work out of the bullpen as a reliever, and could join the rotation if he proves to be effective. He is worth taking a shot on in larger NL-only leagues if you have a spot for him.
June 3, 2008
Prized pitching prospect Christopher Volstad has been placed on the seven-day DL at Double-A Carolina due to a right triceps strain, according to MLB.com.

Our View:The 21-year-old hurler is expected to miss one start for Carolina.
April 25, 2008
Chris Volstad got a no-decision for Double-A Carolina on Thursday despite allowing only one run on two hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out six.

Our View:It has been an outstanding start to the season for Volstad, who has a 2.90 in five starts. The former first-round pick struggled at High-A last season, but he is turning it around this season due to his power sinker and plus command. The 21-year-old could see the majors at some point this season and has the polish to make an immediate impact.
March 24, 2008
Christopher Volstad had his first poor outing of the spring as he allowed seven runs in two innings on Monday. Volstad allowed eight hits and two walks in the outing but he still appears to be in the mix for a spot in the Marlins rotation, this according to the AP. “Everybody’s allowed to have one of those games,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “He has pitched too well for you to put all your eggs in one basket and make your decision on two innings.” If your asking us it appears like he will begin the year in the minors giving the 2005 first round draft pick more time to mature.
March 17, 2008
Christopher Volstad had another strong day from the mound on Monday as he only allowed one run on five hits over five innings of work against Minnesota. Volstad remains unbeaten this spring with a 3-0 mark, and a stellar 1.13 ERA over 16 innings.
