Player Notes
September 26, 2008
Jair Jurrjens is going to skip his final start Sunday so Mike Hampton can get one more chance to prove what he can do, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Jurrjens has pitched 188.1 innings this season, but is not tired and is still physically fine. He won 13 games this season with a 3.68 ERA and 1.37 WHIP and has nothing left to prove.
September 22, 2008
Jair Jurrjens lasted seven innings on Monday allowing the Phillies to score two runs on five hits and a walk. He also struck out one.

Our View:Jurrjens has a 3.68 ERA after 31 starts in a pretty remarkable performance for a guy who entered the year with all of 30.2 innings pitched in the majors though his performance has clearly faltered over his last 13 appearances (4.66 ERA).
September 11, 2008
Jair Jurrjens won his second straight start on Thursday night against the Rockies. It wasn't Jurrjens best start but lasted long enough to get the win. In six innings he gave up four runs on eight hits but did strike out 10 Rockies.

Our View:Jurrjens was in a slump in August, going 1-3 and an ERA of 5.73 but has won both of his starts in September. If you are in a deep league and are looking for some innings he could be an option.
September 5, 2008
Jair Jurrjens picked up his first win since August 9th on Friday night against the Nationals. It took him 98 pitches to get through five innings, after which he was pulled. He gave up six hits and one run while walking three and striking out six.

Our View:This should help him snap out of his funk. He was 1-3 with a 5.73 ERA in August. Jurrjens is a better pitcher than that and he should return to form in September.
August 31, 2008
Jair Jurrjens threw an average game for the Braves, allowing three runs in six innings to Washington, though he did strike out seven in the Braves 8-4 loss.

Our View:Jurrjens has had a good season for Atlanta, but has struggled mightily in August. However, it is possible that this performance will be a steppingstone to success the rest of the way. Or at least that's what fantasy owners hope.
August 26, 2008
Jair Jurrjens allowed six runs on six hits and two walks over just three innings Tuesday. Atlanta's late rally kept him from picking up his 10th loss.

Our View:This is Jurrjens' seven straight poor outing, and it's possible he could be wearing down.
August 15, 2008
Jair Jurrjens was dynamite for the Braves Friday, allowing just two runs on eight hits while striking out nine over seven innings. He picked up his eighth loss, though, as Matt Cain was just a bit better.

Our View:Jurrjens just might be your NL Rookie of the Year with a 3.15 ERA in 24 starts.
August 9, 2008
The Braves relied on bats for the win, beating up on the Diamondbacks 11-4, though RHP Jair Jurrjens put forth a solid effort on the mound. Jurrjens pitched six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:Jurrjens moves to 11-7 on the season with an ERA of 3.18. He has allowed three earned runs in each of his last three outings with eight walks and 11 strikeouts along the way.
August 5, 2008
Jair Jurrjens saw his record drop to 10-7 after losing to the Giants 4-2 on Monday. He went six innings, walking three, striking out one and giving up three earned runs.

Our View:Jurrjens has been a pleasant surprise, and is now the ace of the staff with Smoltz, Glavine and Hudson all suffering from injuries.
July 30, 2008
Jair Jurrjens pitched a solid game on Wednesday night but he still lost his sixth game of the season. Jair held the Cardinals to three runs over seven innings allowing seven hits while issuing three walks.

Our View:Jurrjens continues to impress with a 3.06 ERA through 21 starts. With the recent injury to Tim Hudson, the team will continue to lean on this youngster for more effective work down the stretch.
July 25, 2008
Braves hurler Jair Jurrjens won his tenth game of the year, dominating the Phillies by throwing eight innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out six.

Our View:Jurrjens continues to be one of the most underrated pitchers in the National League, and his ERA is now at 3.02.
July 16, 2008
Jair Jurrjens may not be receiving as much publicity as some other young arms like Edinson Volquez of the Reds, but that doesn't mean that he hasn't had a great start to his major league career with the Braves, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Our View:Jurrjens leads NL rookies in wins (nine) and is second in ERA (3.00). Jurrjens, Jo-Jo Reyes, Jorge Campillo and Charlie Morton have teamed to replace John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Mike Hampton to give the Braves the arms they have needed in a depleted rotation.
July 9, 2008
Jair Jurrjens has been named the NL Rookie of the Month for June, according to the AP. Jurrjens went 3-0 with a 1.63 ERA over four starts in the month, and didn't allow an earned run in his last three outings.

Our View:Jurrjens is 9-4 with a 3.00 ERA and 1.32 WHIP overall. Other nominees for the monthly honor were Cardinals' righty Mitchell Boggs, Ryan Bowker of the Giants, and Padres' second baseman Edgar Gonzalez.
July 3, 2008
Jair Jurrjens didn't throw a quality start but allowing four runs on eight hits in seven innings of work against the hard-hitting Phillies lineup is nothing to be ashamed of.

Our View:The rookie walked one and struck out six in his fourth loss of the season.
June 27, 2008
Jair Jurrjens hurled eight scoreless innings, with only three hits allowed, in Friday's 4-0 win over the Blue Jays, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View:Jurrjens is now 8-3 and trimmed his ERA to 2.94. He has won three of his last four starts, and impressively hasn't allowed a earned run in the last three.
June 27, 2008
Jair Jurrjens joins veteran All Star Time Hudson as the only Atlanta starter from Week 1 that was still healthy, this according to the team website. Three of the Braves' five starters -- Charlie Morton, 24, Jo-Jo Reyes, 23, and Jurrjens, 22 -- are under the age of 25, and none has more than a year of Major League experience. "Those three, my gosh, they're holding this together," said second baseman Kelly Johnson. "They're the reason why we're four or five games out instead of 10."

Our View:With less than three weeks before the All-Star break, the Braves are four games back of the first-place Phillies in the National League East. Considering the team doesn't have a core of veterans (John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, Hampton and Chipper Jones) that aren't nursing some kind of injury, the team has performed well. If the Braves remain close at the All Star break the chances of the front office reaching out for help is more likely.
June 21, 2008
Jair Jurrjens will be targeting his eighth win of the season tonight when the Braves host the Mariners, according to MLB.com. He is 7-3 over 14 starts, with a 3.43 ERA and passable 1.43 WHIP.

Our View:Jurrjens is coming off a strong outing as he threw 7.2 scoreless innings against the Rockies (on June 16), with seven strikeouts, and should be in your fantasy rotation against the American League's worst team.
June 16, 2008
Jair Jurrjens improved to 7-3 after holding the Rockies scoreless for 7.2 innings on Monday night.

Our View:This was a great bounce back effort for a guy who was torched for 20 hits and 11 runs his last two outings. Jurrjens is still an above average pitcher, so don't let the previous two outings sway your from having faith in the right hander that the Tigers sorely wish they had held on to.
June 16, 2008
Jair Jurrjens has been slowed by a twisted ankle, and there was a possibility he could be headed to the DL, but is expected to make his start tonight against the Rockies, according to MLB.com.

Our View:He had his last start on Wednesday scratched due to the bum ankle. Jurrjens is 6-3 this season with a 3.77 ERA, but has given up four homers in his last three starts, and Colorado is the worst possible place he can pitch right now.
June 11, 2008
Jair Jurrjens may be headed to the DL, according to MLB.com. While walking down the dugout stairs after Tuesday night's loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the young starter twisted his right ankle. The Braves will use Jeff Bennett to start Wednesday night's game.

Our View:If Jurrjens heads to the DL, then only Tim Hudson will remain from the opening day rotation. Charlie Morton, who has gone 4-2 with a 2.05 ERA for Triple-A Richmond, will likely start in Glavine's place on Sunday, when the Braves play the Angels before ESPN's nationally-televised audience.
June 1, 2008
Jair Jurrjens has a blister on his right thumb, and he reluctantly admits that it might be the reason for some of his issues. "It's just my location and my velocity is down a little bit," Jurrjens tells MLB.com. "I don't know. Maybe I'm just scared to put pressure on the thumb... If I didn't think I was going to be able to do the job, I'd have said something, but I took the ball, so there are no more excuses." Jurrjens has been treating the blister with cream and seeing some good results.

Our View:Jurrjens is slated to pitch against the Marlins on Thursday. It's not a bad idea to bench him in mixed leagues, provided you have a decent fill-in option.
May 31, 2008
Jair Jurrjens was rocked for six runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings in Saturday's 8-7 loss to Cincinnati. He also issued six walks with two strikeouts, and ended the night with a no decision, in a game that took 10 innings to decide.

Our View:That was a poor outing, but he has been pitching well, as he allowed two or less earned runs in six of his previous nine starts. He held a solid 2.86 ERA and 1.24 WHIP heading into tonight's game as well.
May 14, 2008
Jair Jurrjens will work on short rest and start for the Braves on Friday. He threw 69 pitches in the first half of a doubleheader on Monday. "Sixty-nine pitches is nothing," manager Bobby Cox tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:Jurrjens will draw Rich Harden in the home game against the A's. That's not ideal, but this rookie right-hander was due to pitch over the weekend one way or another.
May 12, 2008
Jair Jurrjens was dealt his third loss of the season on Monday, as Atlanta was shut out 5-0 against the Pirates in the top half of a double-header. Jurrjens surrendered three runs on three hits over five innings, with three walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:It was still a quality outing for him, and he only allowed one earned run in each of his previous two starts, with one total walk. He also held a strong 1.08 WHIP heading into today's game.
May 11, 2008
Following Sunday's rainout, the Braves and Pirates will play a doubleheader on Monday. Jair Jurrjens and Zach Duke will battle in the earlier contest, followed by Tim Hudson and John Van Benschoten in the later game, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Our View:Jurrjens now lines up for a two-start week, which is nice for those head-to-head fantasy leagues.
May 6, 2008
Atlanta RHP Jair Jurrjens earned his fourth win of the season, pitching a gem to lead the Braves to a 5-3 win over the San Diego Padres. Jurrjens pitched six innings, allowing just one run on seven hits. Jurrjens also held the Padres to just one walk while striking out eight.

Our View:That's three wins for Jurrjens over his last four outings (including one no decision), touting 23 strike outs versus just eight walks.
April 30, 2008
Jair Jurrjens continued his rise to prominence on Wednesday as he held the Nationals to just two hits and one run over seven innings, though he wasn't involved in the decision.

Our View:Jurrjens lowered his ERA to 3.05 and his WHIP to 1.04, and he is making a run at the surprise starting pitcher for the month of April award in the National League.
April 25, 2008
Jair Jurrjens did his best imitation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde on Friday night. The right-hander was perfect in the first two innings against on Friday night versus the Mets. He then proceeded to walk three consecutive batters with the bases loaded in the third. Then he retired his final 10 batters. Jurrjens was the recpient of Atlanta's 6-3 victory over division rival New York.

Our View:Jurrjens combined with four relievers for a Friday night two-hitter.
April 20, 2008
Jair Jurrjens recorded his second win of the season on Sunday pitching three-hit ball over seven innings. The right-hander beat Japanese import, Hiroki Kuroda, and the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-1.

Our View:Jurrjens struck out countryman Andruw Jones three times on the day, and normally that would be considered a feat. However, the ex-Brave isn't hitting (.169) his weight and has showed little reason to believe he's working his way out of an April funk.
April 2, 2008
Jair Jurrjens picked up his first victory in a Braves uniform as he limited the Pirates to just two runs in 5.1 innings. Jurrjens allowed seven hits and a walk on the night in a solid, but brief, first outing. With each solid outing, the prospects of Jurrjens remaining in the starting rotation will continue to grow.
April 1, 2008
Jair Jurrjens will start his first game of 2008 on Wednesday against Pittsubrgh, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Brian McCann should catch that game and said, "He knows what he's doing on the mound. He's way more mature than 22 years old. He has a four-seam and a two-seam fastball, and he puts the ball where he wants to. He's going to be a front-line starter." That is certainly encouraging news from McCann.
March 22, 2008
Jair Jurrjens gave up four runs in five innings of work on Saturday as the Nats beat the Braves, 4-1. The right-hander struck out three batters and walked one.
March 15, 2008
Jair Jurrjens got rocked for four runs on four hits over a mere 2.2 innings of work, with four walks and one strikeout. He was pitching well prior to today's disaster, and was notably in contention for the 5th spot in the rotation.
March 10, 2008
Jair Jurrjens has impressed the entire Braves organization with his stuff this spring, this according to a report on MLB.com. Jair allowed only two hits and one walk in four innings during which time he blanked the Cardinals on Monday. In three spring starts, Jair owns a 1.00 ERA and he appears to be the clear-cut leader in the battle for the 5th spot in the rotation.
March 5, 2008
Jair Jurrjens blanked the Indians for three innings on Wednesday. He allowed no hits and no runs, walked none, and struck out two. It's a nice outing for a guy competing for the No. 5 spot in the rotation.
