GM Jim Hendry commented that Jeff Samardzija could land in the Cubs' rotation next season if they fail to acquire Jake Peavy in a trade or can't re-sign Ryan Dempster, according to the Chicago Tribune. Hendry said, "It depends on what happens over the winter. I know he wants to start down the road. And nobody doesn't feel he'd be real good at starting. Next spring we're going to put him in whatever role helps the club the most. There's no way we can determine that on Nov. 5."

Our View:Samardzija held his own as a rookie in 2007, as he maintained a 2.28 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over 27.2 innings of relief. His fantasy value would see a significant boost if he ends up in the Cubs' rotation in 2009.

The Cubs are rounding the playoff roster into shape and rookie Jeff Samardzija will be included on it, according to MLB.com.

Our View:In 26 games since coming up to the big club, Samardzija has an ERA of 2.28 and has struck out 25 hitters in 27.2 innings.

Jeff Samardzija gave up three runs and got no outs on Saturday against teh Reds. Thankfully, the Cubs were up big and the runs were, for the most part, meaningless.

Our View:Despite the blasting, his ERA remains an impressive 2.05 after 22 innings in the bigs. He should remain a good source of holds and provide a high K/9 rate in the process.

Jeff Samardzija has extended his scoreless-innings streak to 11 (against Cincinnati Wednesday), according to the Daily Herald.

Our View:He is pitching great right now, but really only holds fantasy value in leagues that use middle men.

Jeff Samardzija may make his first start with the Cubs on Sunday, according to MLB.com. Because of Wednesday's doubleheader, the Cubs have to tweak the rotation for the upcoming series in Florida and may call upon Jeff Samardzija for Sunday. He said, "It'd be great. What day did Lou Piniella say? Sunday? It'll be hot."

Our View:Samardzija has fared well as a reliever with the Cubs this season, and would be worth starting in NL-only leagues as a sleeper if he gets the call for Sunday.
