Player Notes
October 16, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury will sit again in Thursday night's Game 5 of the ALCS, according to the Boston Globe. Coco Crisp will bat leadoff and replaces him in center field.

Our View:Ellsbury is hitless in his last 20 playoff at bats. He will likely play some role in the game, especially if it is close.
October 15, 2008
With left hander Scott Kazmir on the hill for the Rays in Game 5, Jacoby Ellsbury just might find himself on the bench yet again after he was out of the lineup in Game 4, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Ellsbury is hitless in his last 20 playoff at bats though in an odd twist he has been a fair hitter against Kazmir, despite the fact that he is left-handed, with a .286 average in 14 at-bats.
October 14, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is being benched for tonight's game after posting no hits in his last 20 at-bats, according to MLB.com. J.D. Drew will bat leadoff and Coco Crisp will play center field.

Our View:After a red-hot ALDS, Ellsbury has been solved by the Rays' pitching staff. He is 100 percent available for the game and figures to play a part in it if it is kept close.
October 13, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury will roam center field and remain in the leadoff spot in tonight's Game 3 of the ALCS against the Rays, despite going 0-for-11 (with no walks) over the first two games in the series, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:The team still has faith in the speedy rookie, who swiped 50 bases and scored 98 runs in the regular season.
October 5, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury had a big night at the plate going 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI for the Sox. He also had second base stolen before sliding over the bag and being tagged out by Erik Aybar.

Our View:Ellsbury has looked good at the plate hitting .429, and continues to be a positive influence at the top of the Sox order despite making the occasional mistake (such as sliding past second on that steal attempt).
October 2, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI and also reached base on a three-base error by Gary Matthews. Ellsbury did it on the other side of the ball as well by making a diving catch that robbed Mark Teixeira of a hit.

Our View:Ellsbury shined in last year's postseason and he's off to another spectacular start this time around. Ellsbury embodies the new look Red Sox who seem to promote speed and defense.
September 30, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury appears likely to return to the leadoff spot for the Red Sox in Game 1 of the ALDS, according to The Providence Journal. "I said all year, even when he wasn't hitting leadoff, we would be a better team when we got him back in that leadoff spot, and that's what happened," manager Terry Francona said.

Our View:The team hasn't officially announced their lineup yet, but reading the tea leaves, it would appear that Ellsbury will be leading off the batting order for the club from Boston.
September 27, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 19-8 loss to the Yankees. He hit two singles, a double, and a solo home run. He also swiped his 50th base of the season.

Our View:He is now only two runs scored away from 100. He also extended his hitting streak to 17 games.
September 24, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to a career-best 14 games Tuesday with a double against Cleveland, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Ellsbury needs one more steal for 50 and six more runs for 100. His double was his 20th.
September 22, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury pushed his hitting streak to 13-games on Monday night with two hits against the Indians. He also scored two runs in the effort.

Our View:Ellsbury has used this streak to boost his average to .274, but he hasn't adjusted to the way he has been pitched to this season until only recently. Regardless, he has 49 steals and 93 runs scored, so if he hits in the .270's fantasy leaguers wont care too much.
September 21, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury accumulated three hits in four at-bats and missed the cycle only by a home run in the Red Sox 3-0 win over Toronto.

Our View:Ellsbury has seen his average rise to .273 this month, and has a hit in every game but two in September. Fantasy owners have to be fairly pleased with his season, especially if he turns it up at the end.
September 21, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury was just 1-for-5 on Saturday, but he now has an 11-game hitting streak going, according to the Boston Globe. He stole a base as well, and leads the American League with 49 on the year.

Our View:Ellsbury cooled off considerably after a hot start, but his average is now at .269 on the season, and all those stolen bases are sure to be beneficial to fantasy owners.
September 14, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury stole his 48th base of the season to increase the Red Sox team total to 114, tied with the 1973 team for the second most swipes since 1918 for the club (they stole 116 in 1934).

Our View:Ellsbury is hitting a disappointing .265 but the steals pretty much negated the poor average. Still, he is hitting just .253 over his last 45 games as he has struggled to adjust to the way he is being pitched in his second major league season.
September 13, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored in Saturday's 7-5 win over Toronto in the second half of the doubleheader. He also drew one walk in the game.

Our View:Ellsbury has scored 84 runs this season, and there are 15 games left in Boston's season for him to chase 100.
September 10, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury has a quad injury that has been called minor, but Red Sox manager Terry Francona decided to rest him for the second night in a row, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:Ellsbury probably could have played, and the injury is not likely to hamper him very long.
August 25, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury sustained abrasions on his right eye, forehead, cheek, and shoulder when he crashed into the chain-link opening to the bullpen at the Rogers Centre, according to the Boston Globe. He also lost a bit of skin on his shoulder, and manager Terry Francona said, "The fact that he stayed in and played that game is, and it might be a little overdramatic, but I thought he grew up a little bit today. I don't mean like he had to, but he understood where we were physically with the rest of our team and what he can do by staying in the game. I thought that was huge."

Our View:He is sore and a bit banged-up, but should be fine to keep playing.
August 24, 2008
Boston outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury made a great catch slamming up against the right field fence on Adam Lind's drive with one out in the fourth, but he paid the price, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:He came down hard and grabbed the right side of his face. Sox medical people ran out to right field to treat Ellsbury, who after an 8-minute delay, stayed in the game.
August 20, 2008
Boston outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury stole two more bases last night, putting him at an AL-leading 40 stolen bases on the season, 14 stolen bases shy of the franchise record set by Tommy Harper in 1973, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:Ellsbury, who now faces 35 remaining games to reach the mark, is the sixth player in Red Sox history to reach 40. With his two swipes on Tuesday, he now has 12 multi-steal games, which is the most by a Red Sox player since 1956.
August 16, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury returned to the starting lineup on Saturday, but he went 0-for-4 against Roy Halladay. The outfielder has missed four starts due to a bruise near his tailbone.

Our View:Fantasy owners can plan on using Ellsbury moving forward, and they shouldn't treat him too harshly for failing against one of the best hurlers in the majors.
August 15, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is penciled into Friday's starting lineup in center field, according to the Providence Journal. He was out of the starting lineup for three straight games due to a bruise near his tailbone.

Our View:He is also penciled into the leadoff spot, meaning the Red Sox are confident he is ready to return and make an impact.
August 15, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury was out of the starting lineup against the Rangers Thursday for the third straight game, according to the Boston Globe. Ellsbury is still ailing from a bruise near his tailbone after being hit by a pitch from John Danks in Monday's game against the White Sox.

Our View:He is doing much better, and could be fine for the next fantasy week.
August 12, 2008
Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was originally in tonight's lineup, but he was a last-minute scratch due to tightness and a bruised tailbone, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:He was hit by a pitch Monday night in Chicago, believed to be the source of the problem, though it is not considered serious. Coco Crisp is now playing center.
August 9, 2008
Boston outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury enjoyed a strong night of production in the Red Sox's 6-2 win over the White Sox, going 3-for-4 with his seventh homer of the season to total one RBI and two runs scored on the night.

Our View:After struggling through July, Ellsbury has found his groove hitting in the late part of the order, hitting .353 through early August with five RBIs over his last three games.
August 6, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits, including his sixth homer of the season, in Boston's win Wednesday.

Our View:This was Jacoby's second straight multi-hit game, which he needed given his low batting average since June.
August 5, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-4 with one run, one RBI, and two stolen bases in Tuesday's win over the Royals.

Our View:Hey, look who's running! Ellsbury hadn't stolen a base in the last 25 games and owned just one steal over the previous 37 contests. We can only hope this is a sign of better things ahead.
July 30, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury has been removed from the leadoff spot and will be replaced by Coco Crisp, according to the Providence Journal. Ellsbury will now bat ninth.

Our View:Over the last 35 games Ellsbury has hit .223 going 33-for-148 leading to the demotion. Almost as bad is the fact that he has almost completely stopped running with just one steal in June (22 games). No steals and a poor average equal little fantasy value from the youngster.
July 22, 2008
Manager Terry Francona stated that he has no immediate plans to drop Jacoby Ellsbury from the leadoff spot in Boston's lineup, despite his .234 on-base percentage over the previous 26 games, according to the Boston Globe. Francona said, "He's going through the normal growing pains players go through. When we played them, everyone was raving about Arizona's young players, and you look now and they're hitting .250, .260. In Boston you're not supposed to do that. The more he gets on base, the better we are. I have enough faith in him to let him work this thing out."

Our View:Although he is stuck in a slump, this is still good news for fantasy owners. He holds his most fantasy value with 35 stolen bases.
July 21, 2008
The Boston Globe reports that the slumping Jacoby Ellsbury could be dropped from the leadoff spot once David Ortiz returns to the Red Sox lineup.

Our View:Ellsbury has been a nightmare in his last 26 games. He has struck out more than once per six at-bats, drawn only four walks, stolen one base and been caught stealing three times. His OBP is a meager .234. He has just one home run over his last 48 games.
July 9, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury went 4-for-6 in the 18-5 rout of the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon. Ellsbury had a double and three singles in the third game of a series sweep of Minnesota.

Our View:The center fielder raised his average seven points to .278 and his runs scored are now at 60 on the season. Surprisingly, the Boston speedster didn't attempt a stolen base, even early on with the game was relatively close.
July 2, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury will remain the leadoff man for the Red Sox despite watching his batting average slide 20 points in June. Terry Francona told the Boston Herald, “What he has shown he can do ignites us so much. We believe in him. Once you believe in somebody, you have to kind of let him go through it. I don’t think he’s tired. I think he’s a little frustrated. With what he brings on the bases, if he gets on on an error or a force out at second base, he can change the game with his legs.”

Our View:We fully expect Ellsbury to bounce back from a lousy June but there is some concern. He walked just three times while striking out in 20 appearances during June. April and May saw him take 27 base-on-balls next to just 19 whiffs. Have pitchers figured him out? Keep an eye on that ratio.
June 28, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury and his teammates might be one of the higher scoring offenses in the league, but Boston's pitchers are 0-for-22 at the plate with 16 strikeouts in interleague play.

Our View:Ellsbury started in CF for Coco Crisp, who began serving a five-game suspension for his role in a bench-clearing brawl in a June 5 game against Tampa Bay.
June 27, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is not in the starting lineup, as Red Sox manager Terry Francona has decided to start Coco Crisp before he begins his suspension, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Ellsbury is riding a seven game hitting streak, but it's not like he's hitting the cover off the ball. He has not had a multi-hit game once during the streak and is hitting just .219 in those seven games. Overall, he has just seven hits in his last thirty seven at-bats, so a day off won't hurt him.
June 25, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury has a six-game hitting streak, but he has only one hit in each of those six games. During that span he's also failed to steal a base, his strength in the fantasy realm.

Our View:The trend this year for players coming back from injury is to initially scuffle. Since returning from his wrist injury Ellsbury hasn't been the same player he was in the first two months of the season. It makes you wonder if his wrist is 100 percent, which ultimately takes a toll on his ability to swing an effective bat. If he can't get on base, he can't steal bases.
June 17, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is not in Boston's starting lineup tonight against left-handed pitcher Jamie Moyer, according to the Boston Herald. Coco Crisp gets the call in center field.

Our View:Ellsbury already holds the Red Sox rookie record for stolen bases with 33, in only 64 games played.
June 14, 2008
Boston outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has tied the Red Sox franchise record for stolen bases by a rookie, today registering his 31st stolen bag of the season (his second of the day), according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Ellsbury ties Amby McConnell, setting the mark in 1908.
June 11, 2008
Boston needed just seven hits to score six runs, beating Baltimore 6-3 this evening. Leadoff man Jacoby Ellsbury helped the cause, going 1-for-4 at the dish with his 29th stolen base.

Our View:Ellsbury sparked the rally for five runs in the fifth, stretching what should have been a single into a triple by using his speed to spook an errant throw. That turned into one run scored, leading to five total runs on the inning.
June 11, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury was back in the Boston lineup on Tuesday after sitting out the three-game series against the Mariners. The Red Sox outfielder went 1-for-5 with a run scored.

Our View:His wrist isn't 100 percent according to reports, but that shouldn't affect his ability to steal bases. It appears safe for daily transaction owners to insert him back into the starting lineup.
June 10, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is expected to start tonight against Baltimore, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:He has been bothered by a sprained right wrist, and missed the three-game set against the Mariners, but Manager Terry Francona noted that Ellsbury is confident he is ready to return to the outfield. Francona also mentioned that if Ellsbury displays any hesitancy during batting practice, he would sit him out in favor of Brandon Moss, however. Pencil him into your lineups with caution for Tuesday.
June 9, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury hit off a tee on Sunday, and his injured wrist is improving, according to the Boston Herald. Ellsbury said, "It’s feeling a lot better each day, big improvements, which is good. Not too sore."

Our View:Ellsbury expects to come in on the off day to face live pitching for the first time since straining his right wrist. If that goes favorably, Ellsbury could be in the lineup Tuesday night when the series against Baltimore begins.
June 6, 2008
The Boston Globe reports that Red Sox skipper Terry Francona said outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury is not in the lineup for tonight's game visiting Seattle.

Our View:The center fielder had a second MRI this morning that came back negative. While the injury doesn't look serious, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Ellsbury sit this weekend.
June 5, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury left the Sox game on Thursday with a strained right wrist, according to the Associated Press. Ellsbury was injured while making a diving catch, but the good news is that x-rays were negative.

Our View:We will update this report when we have more information, but for now the hope is that he escaped a major injury.
June 1, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury slowed down on Sunday. He went 3-for-5 with only one stolen base against the Orioles. Ellsbury was also caught attempting to take second base. He has swiped eight bags over the past four games.

Our View:The Orioles had to catch him once, didn't they? Ellsbury continues to lead the majors with 27 steals, and his fantasy stock seems to rise with each passing day.
May 31, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury went 1-for-3 with two walks, and stole three bases in Saturday's 6-3 win over Baltimore.

Our View:He has impressively stolen three bases in back-to-back games, and has 26 for the season.
May 31, 2008
On Thursday, we noted Boston outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury was 20-for-22 on stolen bases and was on pace to challenge the franchise record for stolen bases. Last night, Ellsbury swiped three more and now stands at 23-for-25 on the season.

Our View:The kid has been in a bit of a hitting slump, but he is now just one stolen base behind Michael Bourn and the great Ichiro Suzuki for the major league lead in swipes, and he carries a better OBP and slugging percentage than both.
May 29, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is 20-for-22 on stolen bases putting him on pace to challenge the Red Sox single season stolen base record of 54, according to MLB.com. The record was set by Tommy Harper in 1974.

Our View:Ellsbury's stolen base skills are why he is so valued an addition to a fantasy squad. Hitting at the top of the Sox lineup also doesn't hurt as all those big bats have pushed him across the plate 39 times in 49 games.
May 25, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is going to start in center field today against Oakland, according to FenwayWest.com. As usual, he will bat leadoff.

Our View:Ellsbury is hitting .289 over 149 at-bats, with four homers, 19 RBI, 39 runs scored, and 19 stolen bases. Start if you have him today.
May 22, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is starting in center field today against Brian Bannister and the Royals, according to the Boston Globe. Coco Crisp will ride the pine.

Our View:Ellsbury is hitting .290 over 138 at-bats, with four homers, 17 RBI, 38 runs scored, and 19 stolen bases. Start him if you have him today.
May 19, 2008
A night after being caught on the bases for the first time, Jacoby Ellsbury returned to his stealing ways on Monday by swiping his 17th and 18th stolen base. Ellsbury also had a hit and a run scored.

Our View:Ellsbury has only eight extra base hits in 41 games showing scant power, but as long as he keep running his value will continue to be amongst the top outfielders in the fantasy game.
May 19, 2008
What goes up, usually has to come down. Boston's speedy outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury finally struck out. At stealing second base that is. It was the first time the fleet footed outfielder had been caught in his major league career. Ellsbury had stolen 25 straight bases, 16 of them this season, before Milwaukee catcher Jason Kendall made that perfect connection with second baseman Rickie Weeks in the fourth inning yesterday.

Our View:It was the most consecutive steals without being caught by a Red Sox player at the start of his career since 1920.
May 17, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury will start in center field today against Jeff Suppan and the Brewers, according to the Boston Globe. Coco Crisp is not quite 100%, after working through his illness earlier this week, but said he can pinch run or play defense (or even pinch hit).

Our View:Ellsbury merits a start today, and is still yet to be caught stealing over 15 tries. He has also scored 31 runs over 37 games.
May 13, 2008
The Red Sox report manager Terry Francona will be away from the team for a couple of days following the death of his mother-in-law, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Mary Ann Lang, Francona's mother-in-law, passed away on Monday night in Arizona where the family will travel to attend to family matters.
May 13, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury will miss Tuesday nights game due to a bruised left knee, according to the Providence Journal. The injury isn't serious, and Ellsbury should be back in the next day or two.

Our View:Keep an eye on whether or not Ellsbury curtails his running once he returns as he has been perfect on the bases this season (14-for-14) and in his career (23-for-23).
May 7, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits, two runs and two SB for the Red Sox.

Our View:Ellsbury is now 22-for-22 on SB attempts in his career, the best mark to start a career for a Red Sox player since 1920. A little power would be nice, but we'd take 50 SB with nary a complaint.
May 4, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury went 1-for-4 with two runs and two steals in Sunday's win over the Rays. He is up to 25 runs and 11 stolen bases through 28 games.

Our View:Ellsbury continues to evolve into Boston's version of Ichiro. The average isn't as high, but he's fixed himself atop that lineup and could end up battling for the MLB lead in runs.
May 4, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is starting in left field for the Red Sox today, according to the Boston Herald. David Ortiz is out of action to rest his knee, and Manny Ramirez moved from left field to DH in place of Ortiz. Ellsbury covered Manny's spot in left.

Our View:Ellsbury is hitting .293 over 82 at-bats with three homers, 12 RBI, and 23 runs. He is also yet to be caught on nine steal attempts. He will be a fantasy star when he gets his chance to play every day. For now, you'll just have to settle for sporadic starts here and there.
May 3, 2008
Boston CF Jacoby Ellsbury responded well from the rest earned with a minor groin injury and the adjoining time off from action. Ellsbury had taken batting practice on Thursday and was returned to action in full on Friday night as the Red Sox faced the Tampa Bay Rays, going 1-for-3 at the plate with two walks and key additions in the Sox's surge in the 4th inning.

Our View:Ellsbury drove in a run on a single following a walk to Julio Lugo and a single by Jason Varitek. Ellsbury then stole second base and was consequently driven home by Dustin Pedroia. Ellsbury now touts nine stolen bases and 15 walks versus just seven strike outs.
May 2, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is back in the starting lineup Friday, playing center field and batting leadoff. The Boston and Tampa Bay game is currently in a rain delay.

Our View:Ellsbury has missed the last three games with a sore groin.
May 2, 2008
Manager Terry Francona hopes to have Jacoby Ellsbury available for tonight's game, according to the Boston Herald. Ellsbury hasn't played since Sunday due to a groin injury.

Our View:Francona is also hoping to get J.D. Drew back tonight. We're betting that Ellsbury is the more likely of the two to play.
April 30, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury, out with what is being described as a minor groin injury, is feeling better and should return to the lineup soon, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:The Red Sox have been dealing with injuries to every outfielder not named Manny Ramirez, but at least Coco Crisp is back healthy to fill in at the top of the oder until Ellsbury returns.
April 29, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury sat out Tuesday's game with a sore groin, according to the AP. Coco Crisp got the start in center field and went 0-for-4 at the plate.

Our View:Consider Jacoby day-to-day for the time being.
April 29, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury will ride the pine tonight against Toronto, according to the Boston Globe. Coco Crisp is starting in center field.

Our View:Ellsbury is hitting .280 over 75 at-bats, with three homers, 11 RBI, and eight stolen bases. It is a shame that he doesn't get to play every day yet.
April 29, 2008
Carl Crawford of the Rays left a positive endorsement for Jacoby Ellsbury, according to the Providence Journal. Crawford said, "Let Ellsbury go. I know in the past the Red Sox don’t like to run. But, man, let him go. He’s got some good speed and you can tell he’s going to be a good base-stealer." Ellsbury has eight stolen bases over 25 games this season, and is yet to be caught stealing at the Major League level (he is a perfect 17-for-17).

Our View:Crawford knows a thing or two about stealing bases, as he had at least 50 steals in four seasons, and the Red Sox should listen to him. Fantasy owners would like Boston to listen as well.
April 27, 2008
The Boston Red Sox will give Jacoby Ellsbury the start in left field today, pushing Manny Ramirez to the starting job at DH, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:David Ortiz has been hampered by a bruised right knee and will miss his second game in a row. The injury is not considered serious, but it does give the Sox an opportunity to put both Ellsbury and Coco Crisp, usually battling for opportunity in center, on the field at the same time. Ellsbury has posted at least one hit in nine consecutive games with five walks and just two strike outs to show during that same span. Crisp is doing damage of his own as well, currently hitting .341 with four stolen bases over his last six games. Having them both on the field today versus Tampa Bay could be beneficial while Big Papi continues to heal.
April 24, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury will start in right field against the Angels on Thursday, according to the Boston Globe. JD Drew will get the day off, and Coco Crisp is back in center field.

Our View:Ellsbury recently registered a two-homer game, and the team needs to work him into the mix more, like today. He has 17 hits over 21 games, with eight stolen bases, and only six strikeouts. Start him if you have him.
April 22, 2008
The way it's going, the Red Sox may not let Coco Crisp back into the clubhouse. Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-5 with two homers, three runs, and a pair of RBI on Tuesday night. The outfielder is 9-for-19 with 10 runs and four RBI over the last five games, and his average is up to .308.

Our View:The Boston faithful may revolt is Ellsbury doesn't play every day, even when Crisp is healthy. We know that probably won't happen, but we can dream, right?
April 21, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI, a walk, and two steals against the Rangers on Monday. The outfielder is up to eight stolen bases on the season, and he has yet to be caught. Ellbury has also scored 15 runs over his past 11 games.

Our View:Ellsbury is taking full advantage of the Coco Crisp injury, and the Red Sox are going to find it very difficult to get Jacoby out of the lineup. His average is up to .277 and he has added 13 walks.
April 20, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury will make another start in center field on Sunday in place of the injured Coco Crisp, according to the Providence Journal. He will bat leadoff, as usual.

Our View:Ellbury is only hitting 9-for-39, but has four stolen bases. He needs to take advantage of the playing time while Crisp is out of action.
April 18, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is only hitting .229 on the year, but he continues to play while Coco Crisp is sidelined with a leg injury, and he scored three times thanks to a hit and three walks on Friday.

Our View:Ellsbury needs to hit better than .229 if he hopes to garner 400+ AB this season, but perhaps this night will be the start of good things as he now has 11 BB and only four K on the season.
April 16, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury will start in center field over Coco Crisp tonight, according to the Boston Globe. He will bat leadoff against Yankees' righty Chien-Ming Wang.

Our View:He is hitting 7-for-35 so far, with one homer and five RBI. He also notched two stolen bases.
April 15, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is penciled in as the starting right fielder for the Red Sox tonight while Coco Crisp mans center field. Ellsbury is batting sixth.

Our View:J.D. Drew is not on the lineup card for tonight's game. Drew is a .200 lifetime hitter against Paul Byrd while Crisp has five career hits in 11 at-bats (.467) against the Indians' right-hander.

Jacoby Ellsbury went 1-for-3 with one run, two RBI, a walk, and a stolen base on Sunday. It was his second straight game with a pilfered pillow.

Our View:We were hoping that Ellsbury would be more active on the basepaths than he's been thus far. Hopefully this is the start of something good.

Jacoby Ellsbury will start in center field over Coco Crisp today, according to the Boston Globe. He will lead off, and gets the call against Yankees' righty Mike Mussina.

Our View:Ellsbury is only hitting .176 over 17 at-bats and really needs to perform well today, if he wants to earn more playing time over Crisp.

Jacoby Ellsbury will ride the pine today in favor of Coco Crisp in center field, according to MLB.com. Crisp will get the call against Tigers' lefty Nate Robertson, and Ellsbury has been limited to only 17 at-bats so far this season, with a dismal .176 average.

Jacoby Ellsbury got the start in center over Coco Crisp today but failed to assert his true value as a power moving forward, going 0-for-2 at the plate with two walks and a sacrifice fly that drove in one run. That brings Ellsbury’s batting average to just .176, an outing that is not going to cease the platoon situation with Crisp in center.

Jacoby Ellsbury started over Coco Crisp in center field on Sunday against Toronto, and he didn't disappoint as he went 1-for-4 with a solo home run. That was a good day as he continues to battle Crisp for playing time in the Red Sox outfield.

Boston manager Terry Francona fielded his team with a slightly different look today, according to MLB.com. Facing the Toronto Blue Jays, Sean Casey has earned his first start at 1B for the Sox while Coco Crisp has gotten the start over Jacoby Ellsbury in center. Francona suggests he is simply trying to keep players in shape and ready to go, not wanting folks to grow complacent with sitting. "It's early," Francona said. "[We're] trying to win a game and keep guys sharp. Our guys are good about understanding - especially early on - about being flexible." While it is hard to argue with Francona's reasoning, the fantasy owners with Ellsbury on the roster have to be growing frustrated. We keep hearing Crisp is going to be dealt, but it's not happening and the young star on the rise is forced to miss opportunity as Crisp gets playing time. Casey is nothing more than an option of depth who can give both 1B Kevin Youkilis and DH David Ortiz a rest.

Jacoby Ellsbury will ride the pine today, according to the Boston Globe. JD Drew is returning to right field today, Coco Crisp with play center field, and Manny Ramirez will start in left field, making Ellsbury the odd man out.

According to the Boston Globe, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said on Sunday that rookie center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, last years leadoff hitter in postseason play, probably will bat at the bottom of the order in the season opener in Japan. "You put a young player a little bit at risk when you put him right at the top of the lineup early on," Francona said. "I know what he hit last year. It was impressive, but you're still trying to develop guys." The skipper did not mention who would put at the top of the order.

Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-3 against the Yankees on Monday, and lifted his spring average to .225 (9-for-40). Ellsbury continues to compete for the starting gig in center field.

As Coco Crisp continues to miss time with a groin injury, Jacoby Ellsbury continues to make his case for starting in centerfield. Ellsbury went 1-for-3 with a double in Boston’s 7-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles in spring training today. Ellsbury has enjoyed a nice spring and, following last season’s outstanding introduction in the World Series, there are high expectations that have many pondering if the Sox will be trading Crisp away. Crisp has been sidelined for 11 straight days now, missing prime opportunities to compete for the job, prove his value, or earn and bolster consideration from potential trade suitors.

Fans were introduced to the power-that-could-be, young outfield Jacoby Ellsbury , during the World Series last season. In spring training the anticipation continues to grow as Ellsbury went 3-for-5 in Boston's 2-5 loss to the Marlins in Grapefruit League play today. Ellsbury finished with a double, a homer, two RBI, and a run scored on the day. With days like this, it is hard to imagine Coco Crisp will remain in the race for the starting job.

Jacoby Ellsbury may or may not be the Red Sox starting CF this year as Coco Crisp is still in play, according to a report in the Boston Globe that discusses a conversation with GM Theo Epstein. Look, we believe it will be Ellsbury when all is said and done as Coco Crisp certainly doesn't want to be a backup this season, but it is possible that the team will keep Crisp around for his defense and ability to fill in if J.D. Drew or Manny Ramirez is injured.
