Player Notes
July 2, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury will remain the leadoff man for the Red Sox despite watching his batting average slide 20 points in June. Terry Francona told the Boston Herald, “What he has shown he can do ignites us so much. We believe in him. Once you believe in somebody, you have to kind of let him go through it. I don’t think he’s tired. I think he’s a little frustrated. With what he brings on the bases, if he gets on on an error or a force out at second base, he can change the game with his legs.”

Our View:We fully expect Ellsbury to bounce back from a lousy June but there is some concern. He walked just three times while striking out in 20 appearances during June. April and May saw him take 27 base-on-balls next to just 19 whiffs. Have pitchers figured him out? Keep an eye on that ratio.

Jacoby Ellsbury and his teammates might be one of the higher scoring offenses in the league, but Boston's pitchers are 0-for-22 at the plate with 16 strikeouts in interleague play.

Our View:Ellsbury started in CF for Coco Crisp, who began serving a five-game suspension for his role in a bench-clearing brawl in a June 5 game against Tampa Bay.

Jacoby Ellsbury is not in the starting lineup, as Red Sox manager Terry Francona has decided to start Coco Crisp before he begins his suspension, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Ellsbury is riding a seven game hitting streak, but it's not like he's hitting the cover off the ball. He has not had a multi-hit game once during the streak and is hitting just .219 in those seven games. Overall, he has just seven hits in his last thirty seven at-bats, so a day off won't hurt him.
June 25, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury has a six-game hitting streak, but he has only one hit in each of those six games. During that span he's also failed to steal a base, his strength in the fantasy realm.

Our View:The trend this year for players coming back from injury is to initially scuffle. Since returning from his wrist injury Ellsbury hasn't been the same player he was in the first two months of the season. It makes you wonder if his wrist is 100 percent, which ultimately takes a toll on his ability to swing an effective bat. If he can't get on base, he can't steal bases.
June 17, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury is not in Boston's starting lineup tonight against left-handed pitcher Jamie Moyer, according to the Boston Herald. Coco Crisp gets the call in center field.

Our View:Ellsbury already holds the Red Sox rookie record for stolen bases with 33, in only 64 games played.
