Player Notes
September 15, 2008
Garrett Olson isn't comfortable pitching in the majors and his numbers have been poor due to his nerves, according to the Baltimore Sun. Manager Dave Trembley said, "To me, he looks nervous. I'm going to tell you straight out. He looks nervous out there. Whether or not we can do something, or he can do something, to get over that hurdle, that's yet to be seen. He is still not used to pitching at this level."

Our View:Olson dominated at the minor league level, and Trembley cannot draw another reason as to why he is failing to make an impact with the Orioles. He is expected to remain in the rotation over the final two weeks of the season, and hopefully he will get more comfortable heading into the 2009 campaign.
September 13, 2008
Garrett Olson was lit up for six earned runs on five hits over only 2/3 of an inning in Saturday's 12-6 loss to Minnesota in the bottom half of the doubleheader, with one walk and no strikeouts.

Our View:Olson falls to 9-8 and his ERA climbs to 6.84. He has allowed five or more earned runs in four of his last seven outings, and should not be considered for fantasy lineups over the final two weeks of the season.
September 1, 2008
Garrett Olson had his fourth straight rough outing on Monday as he allowed six runs in just 5.2 innings. Olson gave up six hits while walking five Red Sox as there were constantly runners on base.

Our View:The Orioles may know what they are doing with Olson, but the poor guy has looked dreadful of late allowing, get this, 21 runs in 16 IP (11.81 ERA) over his last four appearances. Memo to the Orioles - get this kid out of there.
August 31, 2008
Garrett Olson will be added to the Orioles big league roster on Monday and will start that night's game against the Red Sox, according to Orioles.com.

Our View:Olson has made 21 starts this season for Baltimore, and has an ERA of 6.38 with a WHIP of 1.71. The only reason to have him on fantasy roster is if the owner is intentionally trying to lose.
August 20, 2008
The Baltimore Orioles have optioned pitcher Garrett Olson to Triple-A Norfolk, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:The left-handed Olson went 8-6 with a 6.38 earned run average over 108 2/3 innings in 21 starts this season.
August 18, 2008
Garrett Olson has been removed from the Orioles rotation and will pitch out of the bullpen, according to the AP. "I think I had to do something to be fair to the team and to be fair to Olson," manager Dave Trembley said. "Olson needs to get some success and be put in a situation that's not as stressful and pressure-packed as it would appear it's been for him his last three starts."

Our View:Trembley also removed Dennie Sarfate from the rotation. The manager has yet to name a replacement for either pitcher.
August 17, 2008
Orioles manager Dave Trembley didn't sound terribly supportive of the future for pitcher Garrett Olson following the debacle that was their 16-8 win over Detroit, according to the Baltimore Sun. Olson managed to get just five outs, allowing five earned runs and four hits, and walking three in the shortest outing of his career. Following the game, Trembley was asked about his pitcher, and he replied, "It was disturbing for me to watch," Trembley said. "I'm a very patient person with players, and I'm very patient with young players, but we need to do something to get him on track and to help him. I'm sure he's just despondent. I'm sure there's no one that feels any worse than he does. That's unfortunate. I'm just glad the team did what they did to pick him up because something like this could be really difficult to bounce back from."

Our View:Olson has made 21 starts, going 8-6 with a 6.38 ERA. He has allowed four earned runs or more in 10 of his past 13 starts and has not made it through the sixth inning in nine of those outings. In two of his past three outings, Olson has failed to log three innings. We believe that says it all, and a move to option him to the minors would surprise no one.
August 2, 2008
Garrett Olson took a shutout into the ninth inning before settling for 8.1 innings of three run ball in his eighth win of the year.

Our View:Olsen continues to give up hits at an alarming rate with 11 tonight and 119 in 98.1 innings, but he only walked one batter on this night to keep the runs scored to a minimum.
July 27, 2008
Garrett Olson, who had given up 18 earned runs in his last three starts, got the victory on Sunday over Ervin Santana and the Angels. He allowed two runs in six innings on seven hits and lowered his ERA to 5.90.

Our View:I guess that's why they play the game! This did not look like a good matchup for the Orioles but they came out on top 5-2. Olson has been one the worst regular starters of the season for the Orioles.
July 17, 2008
Garrett Olson continued a terrible July. Coming into Thursday night's start against the Tigers, he had given up 12 earned runs in nine innings for the month. This start was no much better. He lasted six innings and gave up five runs and 11 baserunners.

Our View:Olson has no business on a fantasy outfit at this point.
July 9, 2008
Garrett Olson allowed seven runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out two, and suffered his fourth loss of the season.

Our View:This is the kind of start that happens to a pitcher that carries a 5.81 K rate in combination with a 3.36 BB rate. Olson never commanded his arsenal or the strike zone on Wednesday night and lasted only 3.2 innings in the loss.
July 3, 2008
Garrett Olson allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits, walked two and struck out two in Thursday's 10-7 loss to the Royals. The southpaw was not involved in the decision.

Our View:Olson had lost two straight decisions coming into tonight's game, and while he was in line to win the game upon his departure, he didn't pitch well enough to deserve a cheap victory.
June 28, 2008
The Orioles will bring LHP Garrett Olson this evening as they resume the Battle of the Beltway, facing the Washington Nationals in interleague action, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:Olson lost his second straight decision on Sunday against Milwaukee, allowing four runs and four hits in five innings. Olson defeated Washington on May 16th in his only other start against them, surrendering three runs and nine hits in five innings.
June 22, 2008
Garrett Olson allowed four runs in over five innings against the Brewers as he was saddled with his third loss of the year.

Our View:Olson has fallen on hard times of late having allowed 14 runs in his last three starts leading to an 8.40 ERA. With a lack of production like that, you don't need us to tell you that it's best to leave him on your bench until he turns things around, if he can that is.
June 17, 2008
Garrett Olson will be making his 10th start of the season when the Orioles host the Astros tonight in inter-league play, according to MLB.com. Olson is 5-2, but holds a weak 4.53 ERA and 1.47 WHIP.

Our View:Olson allowed six earned runs in his last outing (against Boston) and has given up two homers in two of his last three starts.
June 11, 2008
Baltimore LHP Garrett Olson suffered his second loss of the season as the Orioles fell to the Red Sox 6-3. Olson pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (all earned) on seven hits with three walks and no strikeouts.

Our View:Olson gave up two homers on the evening. He surrenderd just one long ball through his first six starts, but has given up four over his last three.
June 5, 2008
Garrett Olson surrendered two runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Twins, with one walk and one strikeout.

Our View:He is now 5-1 for the season, with a 3.86 ERA. He has allowed two or less earned runs in three straight starts.
May 31, 2008
Garrett Olson allowed two runs on three hits over five innings in Saturday's 6-3 loss to Boston, with two walks and five strikeouts. He ended his outing with a no decision.

Our View:Olson still holds a solid 4-1 record over seven starts, but has failed to work past five innings three times.
May 31, 2008
The Baltimore Orioles have been as hot as any team at home this season, and this evening they will ask LHP Garrett Olson to keep them going, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:Olson carries a record of 4-1 with a 4.09 ERA into his start against the Red Sox this evening, touting a record of 3-0 with a 2.41 ERA at home. However, against Boston, work has not been as kind, going 0-2 with an ERA of 7.63.
May 26, 2008
Garrett Olson hurled seven scoreless innings in Monday's 6-1 win over the Yankees, with only three hits allowed. He issued four walks, but had seven strikeouts.

Our View:Olson improves to 4-1 for the season over six starts, and lowered his ERA to 4.09. That was the first time he didn't allow a run in a start, and he tied a season high in strikeouts. He surrendered a season worst six runs in his last outing (also against the Yankees) and bounced back great.
May 16, 2008
Garrett Olson allowed three runs on nine hits over five innings in Friday's 5-3 win over the Nationals, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:Olsen remains unbeaten at 3-0. He has 18 strikeouts and seven walks over 23.1 innings. He is worth a look in AL-only leagues if still available.
April 29, 2008
Garrett Olson looked good in his first start of the year with the O's Tuesday, allowing two runs in 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win. The lefty permitted five walks but helped himself out by striking out six.

Our View:Olson has a good minor league track record, but his time in the big leagues has been less than fruitful. He could be worth a flyer in AL-only play.
April 29, 2008
The Orioles recalled Garrett Olson from Triple-A Norfolk Tuesday. Olson will start tonight against the Rays.

Our View:Olson was dealing for Norfolk, holding a 1.85 ERA with 25 Ks in 24 1/3 innings, but given what he did last year in an O's uniform (7.79 ERA), you should take a wait-and-see approach with him.
April 29, 2008
Garrett Olson has been called up from Triple-A Norfolk and will start for the Orioles against Tampa Bay tonight, according to the AP. Infielder Brandon Fahey has been optioned to Norfolk to make room on the roster for Olson.

Our View:Olson went 1-3 with a 7.79 ERA over seven starts with Baltimore in 2007. He is filling the spot in the rotation left open by the injured Adam Loewen.
April 10, 2008
Garrett Olson threw six scoreless innings on Wednesday, fanning seven and not allowing a walk at Triple-A. Olson is still considered an excellent pitching prospect, and he could be the first option to replace any current Orioles starters.
March 18, 2008
Manager Dave Trembley said that Garrett Olson isn't far from contributing at the major league level if he can improve his command and repeat his delivery, according to the Baltimore Sun. "He's another guy who I don't think would have a whole lot of success at this point and time until he improves in those three areas," Trembley said. The club optioned Olson to Triple-A earlier today, but we may see him with the O's if he can make some strides with his delivery.
March 18, 2008
Garrett Olson, who signed a one-year deal with the O's in mid-February, has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, this according to the Baltimore Sun. The report noted that the team decision was made before today's workout, so it has nothing to do with him hitting Scott Moore on the elbow. Pure coincidence. This move makes Matt Albers, Jon Leicester and Brian Burres the top candidates to be the fifth starter.
February 11, 2008
Garrett Olson signed a one-year deal with the Orioles on Monday. He went 1-3 with a 7.79 earned run average in seven starts last season but remains a promising prospect with the upside to be a No. 3 starter.
