Player Notes
September 6, 2008
Greg Smith threw seven shutout innings against the Orioles on Saturday night improving his record to 7-14. He only gave up three hits but he walked five.

Our View:It was just the second win for the 24 year old since June. Smith has made 28 starts this season and should be able to use that experience to help him land a spot in the 2009 A's rotation.
August 21, 2008
Greg Smith is approaching a new career-high for innings pitched, but is feeling good, according to the SF Chronicle. Pitching coach Kurt Young said, "I think the stuff we do in between starts has allowed him to get to this point, and his arm is feeling good. He's comfortable for this time of year."

Our View:Smith may be feeling good, but he is still winless in his last six starts, with an average of 3.3 walks per outing.

Greg Smith held the White Sox to two runs over five innings on Saturday, but he slipped to 5-12. The rookie allowed eight hits, walked two, struck out one, and tossed a wild pitch.

Our View:Smith hasn't helped fantasy owners very much since May and hasn't won since June, but we are willing to give the rookie some slack during his first major league season. He remains a nice value in keeper leagues.
August 10, 2008
Greg Smith had control problems in Sunday's 6-1 loss to the Tigers at Comerica Park, as he issued seven walks over a mere 4.2 innings of work. Other than that, he only allowed one earned run on three hits.

Our View:Smith is now 0-5 over his last seven starts, and should only be considered in AL-only leagues right now.

The start was going so well, but Oakland LHP Greg Smith found troubles in the later innings and failed to do right by his team, letting the Royals take the 5-2 win. Smith pitched seven innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:Smith was strong through five, but he allowed a two-out, one-run homer in the sixth followed by a three-run shot with two outs in the seventh. Smith now stands at 5-10 on the season with 4.04 ERA.
