June 8, 2008 Luis Hernandez has cleared waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Norfolk, according to the Baltimore Sun. Hernandez was designated for assignment last week. Our View:Hernandez was better at the plate than Freddie Bynum in his time with the O's but the team kept Bynum around for his versatility. |

May 27, 2008 The Baltimore Orioles have decided to move shortstop Luis Hernandez to a reserve role on a permanent basis, instead giving utilityman Freddie Bynum and veteran Alex Cintron a shot to compete for the starting job, according to MLB.com. Our View:Hernandez has seen just five at-bats since Cintron joined the team. The young prospect tabbed to work as the replacement for Miguel Tejada struggled through a horrific spring training and is now on the outs, viewed as one of the lower bench options on the roster. Meanwhile, Bynum has started nearly every game at short for the last three weeks, and manager Dave Trembley has announced this will be the way the team moves forward. |

Our View:The team just sent down Brandon Fahey so it's important that Hernandez is able to stay on the field for the Orioles. April 22, 2008 Luis Hernandez could potentially lose his starting role at shortstop, according to MLB.com. He has struggled offensively and defensively in the early going, and Alex Cintron is seen as a possible replacement, if he can get hot at Triple-A Norfolk. Cintron has an established track record as he's tallied nearly 1,900 at-bats in the Major Leagues, while registering a .277 career average and a .401 slugging percentage. He is a switch-hitter as well. Our View:Freddie Bynum would also be an option when he finishes his rehab stint, but Hernandez still has time to get on track to save his job. |

February 18, 2008 Manager Dave Trembley confirmed Monday that Luis Hernandez is the favorite for the shortstop job, calling him the best defensive option among the candidates, reports the team website. "Obviously, you make an evaluation on what you see," Trembley said. "And what we see in the times he had an opportunity to play last year was he could catch the ball, he has range, he has arm strength and he showed enough offensively with the bat." Those battling for the starting shortstop role are Hernadez, Brandon Fahey and Freddie Bynum. Hernandez didn't show much pop at the minor league level batting .250, sporting a .299 on-base percentage and recording a soft .325 slugging mark. AL-only leagues will consider Hernandez on draft day, but only as a middle infielder in Roto formats. |

February 13, 2008 Luis Hernandez is the favorite to land the starting shortstop job for the Orioles as we head into spring training. "In the brief time [Hernandez] had the opportunity to be with us, he showed what he could do defensively and he did enough things with the bat to show that he could fit," manager Dave Trembley said in the Baltimore Sun. "I don't want to say at this point in time that Luis Hernandez is the shortstop on Opening Day. That's not fair to the other guys. But I want him to be confident and to know that he's going to get an opportunity." Hernandez impressed team officials with his defense in limited action last year and hit .290 in 69 at-bats. However, he's just a career .250 hitter in six minor league seasons. Freddie Bynum and Brandon Fahey are the other options at short, and the O's will also keep an eye on guys like Juan Uribe and Jack Wilson in case their respective teams decide to unload them. |
