Trevor Hoffman is not likely going to be offered salary arbitration by the Padres, according to MLB.com.

Our View:The Padres would like to talk with Hoffman (Type-A free agent) about returning to San Diego in 2009, but there has been no communication between the two sides since October, when the team pulled its one-year, $4 million offer from the table. If the Padres offered the all-time saves leader arbitration and he accepted, his 2009 salary would be decided through the arbitration process. Hoffman made $7.5 million in 2008, and it's likely his salary would be closer to that number than the Padres' offer last month of $4 million.

The San Diego Padres have said they would resume talks with closer Trevor Hoffman, but Hoffman has not responded, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "I've offered to talk to Trevor to try to give him some idea of not only where we are, but where we were and why we withdrew the offer when we did,” Padres CEO Sandy Alderson said.

Our View:Hoffman seems resigned on pitching elsewhere in 2009, and has said he is open to any team in either league. He was reportedly upset when the Padres withdrew their offer.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports believes Trevor Hoffman could interest the Dodgers.

Our View:The 41-year-old saves leader could be employed as a one-year stop-gap at closer, while mentoring Jon Broxton.

Trevor Hoffman is ready to move on from San Diego and has no preferred destination, according to MLB.com. Hoffman said, "I'm absolutely open to anything. National League, American League, just something that's a good fit in a number of arenas. A lot of it is going to depend on what teams come into play."

Our View:The all-time saves leader (554) has already garnered interest from Cleveland and Detroit, and will be a hot target in free agency. He maintained a strong 1.04 WHIP over 45.1 innings in 2008.
November 14, 2008
Trevor Hoffman was blindsided by the Padres' treatment, according to ESPN. Hoffman was offered a one-year deal for $4 million after making $7 million last season.

Our View:Hoffman doesn't sound ready to retire and should be able to get some offers with so many teams looking for closers.
