Pitcher Brian Burres recently underwent LASIK eye surgery. He tells the Baltimore Sun that his vision was so bad at times last year that the catcher had to use different signs.

Our View:Um, did the Orioles think about handing him a pair of glasses? It worked for Rick Vaughn. Burres pitched well last April before blowing up. We don't believe blurry vision was his only issue.
September 20, 2008
Brian Burres, making the start for an injured Daniel Cabrera, was outstanding for Baltimore on Saturday, pitching seven innings of shutout baseball, as the Yankees managed just three hits off of the lefty.

Our View:This was a great start for Burres, who had otherwise been miserable in the role. Though the outing knocked his ERA under 6.00 for the year, he cannot be expected to duplicate this performance in the season's final weeks.
September 20, 2008
The Baltimore Orioles will start Brian Burres on Sunday in place of Daniel Cabrera, who is nursing a sore elbow, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:Fantasy owners should not waste their time with the hurler, who has a 6.32 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in his 28 games pitched, including 21 starts.
August 25, 2008
Brian Burres will be recalled from Triple-A to make the start for Baltimore against the White Sox, according to The Sports Network.

Our View:Burres has a 5.64 ERA in 22 games, including 19 starts this year, and clearly has no value whatsoever in fantasy leagues.
August 21, 2008
Brian Burres is a top candidate to start Tuesday against the White Sox, according to the Baltimore Sun. The team will need a starter, since Dennis Sarfate was demoted to the bullpen.

Our View:Burres was 7-7 with Baltimore this season, with a weak 5.64 ERA and 1.64 WHIP. He should not be considered if handed Tuesday's start against the AL Central-leading White Sox.
July 25, 2008
Brian Burres got destroyed by the Angels, going only 1.2 innings while allowing five runs on seven hits, including two home runs.

Our View:His ERA jumped from 5.02 to 5.37 on the game, and he remains unworthy of fantasy consideration.
July 20, 2008
Brian Burres allowed three earned runs on six hits over 5.1 innings in Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Tigers at Camden Yards, with four walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:He falls to 7-6 for the year, but this was his first loss since June 1.
July 5, 2008
Brian Burres picked up a no-decision on Saturday after allowing nine hits, a walk, and three runs to the Rangers in 5.2 innings.

Our View:Burress is what we call, in technical language, an average pitcher. You can do a whole lot better if you are trying to win something.
June 30, 2008
Brian Burres has been battling a stomach virus, but he is penciled in to make his start tonight against the Royals, according to MLB.com.

Our View:This is good news that manager Dave Trembley didn't have to replace him for tonight, but he is not worth fantasy consideration, as he has allowed six or more earned runs in three of his last six starts.
June 29, 2008
Brian Burres did some throwing and running earlier today, and is expected to make his scheduled start on Monday, according to the Baltimore Sun. He is battling a stomach virus, but looked much better today.

Our View:Manager Dave Trembley does not have a "Plan B" in case Burres cannot go on Monday (against the Royals), and said it would depend on who works today if he goes to the bullpen.
June 29, 2008
Brian Burres' stomach ailment has returned on Saturday, according to the Baltimore Sun. He underwent a CT scan, which came back negative, but he's questionable for Monday's start against the Royals at Camden Yards.

Our View:Manager Dave Trembley is undecided who would cover Burres' spot in the rotation, but he did rule out Hayden Penn.
June 25, 2008
The Baltimore Sun reports that Brian Burres will not make his scheduled start tonight against the Cubs due to a stomach ailment. Matt Albers will get the start instead.

Our View:This is likely a temporary move. No word on when Burres will make his next start.
June 19, 2008
Brian Burres allowed three runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out three in 5.2 innings of work, and helped the Orioles climb three games over .500 for the first time since May 21. Burres improved his record to 6-5 with the win.

Our View:Burres gave up two early runs, single tallies in the first and the second and settled down to finesse the aggressive Astros hitters until Matt Albers took over in the sixth. The lefty won't overpower hitters but when he can locate his breaking pitch he's good enough to supply the Orioles and AL-only owners with quality innings.
June 13, 2008
Brian Burres improved his record to 5-5 on the season as the Orioles beat the Pirates 9-6 on Friday night. The left-hander allowed six runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out four in the win.

Our View:The southpaw bounced back with six innings of work after failing to reach the sixth inning in his three previous starts.
June 13, 2008
Brian Burres will fight to even his record to 5-5 when the Orioles host the Pirates in inter-league play tonight, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Burres hasn't made it past the fifth inning in his last three starts, and has surrendered 18 earned runs over that span. Keep him on your bench until he proves he can be an effective starter again.
June 7, 2008
Brian Burres is to be bumped back a day in the rotation, according to MLB.com. Manager Dave Trembley noted that Burres will get an extra day off before his next start, in a treatment designed to help him right his woes. Burres has been knocked out before the end of the fifth inning in three straight starts. Burres said, "I'm just still trying to figure stuff out. When I'm behind, the only thing I can really throw for a strike right now is the fastball. And I really don't have one of those fastballs where I can get away with throwing it a lot in fastball counts."

Our View:Now, thanks to an off-day for Baltimore on Monday, Burres will get to skip a road game against the imposing Red Sox. Burres would have been scheduled to pitch at Fenway Park on Thursday, but instead he'll start at Camden Yards on Friday.
June 1, 2008
Brian Burres allowed seven runs on 12 hits, walked one and struck out two, lasting only four innings in a 9-4 loss to the Red Sox.

Our View:Over his last two starts, the left-hander has surrendered 15 runs and 22 hits. Not what owners wanted from the Fantasy Week 9 two-start pitcher.
May 27, 2008
Brian Burres will be targeting his fifth win of the season when the Orioles host the Yankees tonight, according to MLB.com. Burres is 4-4 with a 3.16 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.

Our View:Burres only allowed one run on six hits over 7.2 innings in his previous outing against New York on May 22, and held them scoreless over 5.2 innings back on April 19. He is worth consideration for your starting rotation tonight.
May 22, 2008
Baltimore LHP Brian Burres did what he could to give his Orioles a chance for a win, but the offense failed to support his cause and suffered the 2-1 loss to the Yankees. Burres pitched 7 2/3 innings, surrendering just one run on six his, failing to surrender a single walk with five strikeouts gained along the way.

Our View:Burres walked away with no decision and now stands at 1-3 for the month of May, though his low 3.16 ERA shows he has the arm to shine.
May 17, 2008
Brian Burres allowed two runs on four hits, walked two and struck out three and the Baltimore Orioles held on to beat the Washington Nationals 6-5 on Saturday night.

Our View:Burres evened his record at 4-4 on the season, lowered his ERA to 3.44 and has been a pleasant surprise for the shocking 23-19 Orioles.
May 11, 2008
Brian Burres lost his third decision in as many starts on Sunday. The southpaw allowed nine hits and four runs over six innings against the Royals. Burres walked two, struck out one, and mixed in a balk. The Orioles backed him with two hits and no runs.

Our View:We're still mildly impressed by Burres' work this year. He is only useful in AL-only leagues, but he has hung in there after a very rough finish in 2007.
May 7, 2008
The Orioles' fourth loss in a row -- the longest streak of the season, came after left-hander Brian Burres allowed eight hits and lasted just 5.1 innings, this according to the Washington Post. What he lacked in style, Burres made up for with grit, allowing four runs (three unearned) though it was clear early on that he lacked his sharpest stuff. Still, he left the game with his team trailing by two. Unsightly as his outing was, Burres gave his team a chance to win.

Our View:Surprisingly, the O's refuse to go away, and with timely hitting and young arms that don't seem to know they are supposed to be losing. Baltimore is 16-17, four games behind the Red Sox in the AL East.
May 1, 2008
Brian Burres dropped to 3-2 in Thursday's 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay. He surrendered four runs on six hits over six innings, with three walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:Burres has been enjoying a solid campaign as he held a 2.49 ERA and 1.22 WHIP prior to today's loss. His six strikeouts today were his highest of the season. His fantasy stock remains on the rise, and he is worth a look if you need help at the position.
April 26, 2008
Brian Burres has improved his record to 3-1 as he threw eight scoreless innings with only three hits allowed in Saturday's 5-1 win over the White Sox. He also racked up four strikeouts and no walks.

Our View:He lowered his WHIP with his strong performance, which stood at a poor 1.62 heading into today's game. He lowered his ERA to 2.49 as well, and his fantasy stock is on the rise. He is worth a look if you need help at the position.
April 19, 2008
Brian Burres held the Yankees scoreless over 5.2 innings to pick up his second victory of the season. Buress permitted five hits and four walks, but he was able to minimize the damage.

Our View:Buress has acquitted himself fairly well in the early going as he has a 3.63 ERA through four appearances.
April 8, 2008
Brian Burres dazzled in his first start of the year Tuesday, giving up just one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings. The left-hander has struggled in his time at the big leagues but has a good minor league track record. He's at least worth keeping an eye on.
April 8, 2008
Brian Burres is scheduled to make his first start of the season today against the Rangers, according to MLB.com. He beat out Matt Albers for the fifth spot in the Orioles' rotation, and started 17 games in 2007, with 20 appearances from the pen. He will battle Jason Jennings, who is 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA this season.
April 4, 2008
Orioles No. 5 starter Brian Burres was supposed to make his first start of the year on Sunday, but he's been pushed back to Tuesday, according to the Baltimore Sun. He will be available to pitch in relief tonight and maybe tomorrow. Jeremy Guthrie will start on Sunday and Daniel Cabrera will get the ball on Monday. Burres, who pitched an inning of relief in Monday's opener, isn't someone you need to be counting on in fantasy.
March 28, 2008
Brian Burres has locked up the fifth starter's job for the Orioles, beating out Matt Albers, according to the Baltimore Sun. He'll make his first start on April 6, which means he will be available in relief for the O's first two games of the regular season.
March 25, 2008
Brian Burres enjoyed a strong outing against Baltimore on Tuesday as he held the team scoreless over 5.1 innnings of work, with six hits allowed and four strikeouts. This will help in his bid to win a rotation spot.
March 4, 2008
Brian Burres is competing for a job in the Orioles starting rotation, but even if he doesn't win a spot he's still expected to make the team. "I would think what he did for us last year, he is going to figure in somewhere for us," manager Dave Trembley said in the Baltimore Sun. The lefty allowed four hits and one run in two innings yesterday in his first spring outing. Burres didn't fare well with the O's last year, posting a 5.95 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 121 innings, though his 7.1 K/9 rate wasn't bad. He shouldn't be drafted even if he wins a starting spot.
