Matt Albers isn't going to pitch for the Orioles again this year, according to MLB.com. He is coming back from a labrum tear in his shoulder. "Albers is not going to be a guy that will be called up here in September. We don't need to put his name in the mix," manager Dave Trembley said. "The choice that he made was to rehab it instead of having surgery. Time will tell if he made the right decision or not. My understanding was if he had surgery, it would take eight months to get back. By him rehabbing to this particular point in time, he saved that amount of time. But we'll tell on him next year in Spring Training and when the season starts."

Our View:This is the smart move by the O's. They're going nowhere this year, and Albers is an important part of their future.

Matt Albers, who is recovering from a torn labrum (right shoulder), is slated to throw 30 pitches off a mound on Thursday and Saturday, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:He will throw breaking balls along with fastballs and changeups. Barring a setback, he will pitch live batting practice Tuesday. He has a shot to return to Baltimore at some point in September.

Matt Albers has opted to try rehab instead of undergoing surgery on his torn labrum of his right shoulder, according to the AP. Albers said, "I’m still optimistic I’ll be able to pitch this year. I don’t really want to have surgery. I don’t think anyone really wants to."

Our View:His rehab will likely keep him out of action for two months, meaning he isn't worth holding onto as a fantasy prospect.

Matt Albers' MRI revealed a torn labrum in his ailing right shoulder and he could be done for 2008, according to the AP.

Our View:Albers can choose to rehabilitate the shoulder, which would likely keep him on the shelf for at least two months, or he can opt for surgery and be out of action for eight or nine months, hence ending his 2008 campaign. He will weigh his options over the next couple of days.

Matt Albers has been placed on the 15-day DL due to right shoulder inflammation, according to the AP. The club recalled Fernando Cabrera from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk to fill Albers' spot on the roster.

Our View:Albers was rocked for four earned runs on a third of an inning against the Cubs on Wednesday, while making a spot start in place of Brian Burres. He won't have a rotation spot when he returns, and isn't worth holding onto.
June 25, 2008
Matt Albers got the spot start in place of Brian Burress who was unable to go due to the flu. Unfortunately, Albers night was barely any longer as he permitted four runs while recording only one out before being removed from the game with shoulder soreness.

Our View:This was an extremely long night for the Orioles bullpen that actually did a fine job of keeping the team in the game (three ER in 7.2 IP). No word is yet available on the extent of the injury to Albers.
June 25, 2008
Matt Albers will get the start in place of Brian Burress, who is out with a stomach ailment, according to the Baltimore Sun. This will be Albers' third start of the the season.

Our View:Albers had fairly successful outings in his previous two starts this year. On April 14, he went five innings against Toronto, earning the win while holding them to one run. Then on April 30, he took the loss against Tampa Bay, allowing three runs on four hits in six innings of work.
June 1, 2008
Matt Albers could start on Tuesday against the Twins, the Baltimore Sun reports. Triple-A hurler Radhames Liz is also a candidate to replace Steve Trachsel.

Our View:The Orioles could make a more permanent move if Albers or Liz impresses. Trachsel has not pitched well, and these two young right-handers are both in the long-term plans. AL-only fantasy owners may be interested.
April 30, 2008
Matt Albers continued his impressive start to the season by allowing just three runs over six innings to pick up his first loss of the year.

Our View:Albers has 10 appearances this season including two starts, and he owns a 2.42 ERA and 0.94 WHIP over 22.1 IP making him an excellent play in AL Only leagues given that he could stay in the rotation for a while depending on the health reports of Adam Loewen.

Manager Dave Trembley commented on reliever Matt Albers, according to MLB.com. Trembley said, "I don't think it's that he doesn't have the stuff to be a starter. I think it's just his value to us is as a long guy. I think if you use him on our club right now as a starting pitcher, you're opening up a hole in our bullpen that I'm not so sure we can fill right now. I just don't see that. I think he's very valuable what he's doing right now. he fits in rather nicely as a long reliever. I'm talking about the guys that we have up and coming in this organization that we have earmarked to be starting pitchers for us. I think this guy really complements those guys and really establishes a bridge to get to the guys in the eighth and ninth inning. He's almost like a sixth starter. But right now, I see his forte as being a long guy."

Our View:Albers is pitching very well so far, as he has only allowed one run and eight hits over 13.1 innings, with nine strikeouts. While he was pushing for a spot in the rotation, it appears that Trembley will hold him as a reliever, which will hinder his fantasy potential and value.

Matt Albers delivered beautifully on Monday. He held the Blue Jays to five hits and one run over five innings and improved to 2-0. Albers was making a spot start.

Our View:Albers has yet to allow a run over 11.1 innings this year, and he is pushing for a spot in the rotation. He wasn't able to win a job in spring training, but he's giving the O's ample reason to re-think that call.
April 14, 2008
Matt Albers will start for the Orioles on Monday night against the Blue Jays. The club is hoping to get five innings out of the right-hander, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Our View:Albers has been serving as a long reliever, but the Orioles need him on Monday because they had a double-header last Wednesday. This may just be a one-start outing, although Albers nearly made the rotation this spring.
April 1, 2008
Matt Albers was hitless over 2 2/3 innings against Tampa Bay on Monday, with one strikeout. He has his season off to a great start as he fights for playing time out of the Orioles' pen.
March 25, 2008
Matt Albers and Brian Burres are reportedly the two finalists for the fifth spot in the Orioles' rotation, according to the Baltimore Sun. Manager Dave Trembley also didn't dismiss the chance that one of the pitchers sent down to minor league camp (Hayden Penn, Garrett Olson or Radhames Liz) could come up during the second week of April and ultimately join the rotation as the fifth starter.
March 18, 2008
Matt Albers and Brian Burres have been competing for the final spot in the Orioles' rotation, but on Tuesday, manager Dave Trembley said that Jon Leicester and Jim Johnson are under consideration, too, according to the Baltimore Sun. Leicester will start Thursday's exhibition game, while Johnson will get an extended look during Sunday's contest. On Tuesday, Albers gave up three runs and three hits over 3 1/3 innings and Burres allowed a run and three hits over three innings. A decision on who will get the nod may come down to the end of spring training. Garrett Olson was in the mix before being sent down on Tuesday.
March 13, 2008
Orioles manager Dave Trembley told the Baltimore Sun that he is trying to narrow that list of fifth-starter candidates. Matt Albers , Brian Burres, Hayden Penn, Garrett Olson, Radhames Liz, Lance Cormier and Jim Johnson are believed to be in the running, barring late trades or free-agent acquisitions. When fantasy managers face the same fifth starter dilemma at the end of the month, the decision should not include any of the names Baltimore skipper Trembley has in his hat.
February 29, 2008
Matt Albers gave up two runs on three hits Friday in a 7-5 win over Florida. Albers is trying to win a spot in the O's rotation, and outings like this don't help his chances.
