Tony Pena Jr., who hasn't played in nearly a week, started at shortstop in Baltimore on Thursday replacing Mike Aviles.

Our View:Pena hasn't played in the teams' last six games. He lost his starting shortstop job to Aviles after hitting .154 in 169 at-bats in April and May.

Tony Pena Jr. was back in the starting lineup Tuesday after the Royals used four different shortstops in four games. "Tony's playing today and we'll see how he does. Hopefully, some of the work that we got done this last homestand will play out," manager Trey Hillman said on MLB.com.

Our View:Pena provides good defense but is batting an embarrassingly-low .155. Unless he steps it up, expect the team to continue trying other out at the position.

Tony Pena Jr. tried wearing contacts but when they caused blurred vision in one eye he decided to go with a pair of prescription glasses, according to MLB.com.

Our View:There are so many jokes here we don't even know where to start. the .160 hitting Pena even made one of his own: "I guess I'm not used to seeing the ball this good."

Tony Pena Jr. continues to struggle at the plate, though on Thursday night he went 1-for-3 with the Royals lone RBI off of Daniel Cabrera.

Our View:Pena is approaching 100 AB on the year, so it's not like the team hasn't given him time to work out of his season long slump (.167). Pena's defense remains gold glove caliber, but he simply must hit better to maintain a spot in the lineup.

Tony Pena Jr. was given the night off on Friday to rest his body as well as his mind after a 1-for-27 start for the Royals, this according to MLB.com. "I'm far from giving up on Tony Pena, but it's always good to get other guys in the mix," manager Trey Hillman said. Alberto Callaspo started on Friday, but it is not certain who will get the call come Saturday, so keep an eye on how it plays out if you are counting on either player in an AL Only league.
