Player Notes
June 19, 2008
Santiago Casilla has been activated from the 15-day DL, according to the AP. The team decided to designate Kiko Calero for assignment, as an adjoining move. Casilla has recovered from right elbow soreness.

Our View:Casilla only allowed two earned runs over 19.1 innings this season, with 22 strikeouts and a 0.83 WHIP. He should return to fantasy service, namely in leagues that use middle relievers.
June 18, 2008
Santiago Casilla made his final rehab appearance on Monday with Oakland's top affiliate and then joined the A's in Arizona on Tuesday, but he won't be activated until Thursday unless there is a pressing need in the bullpen, something that is unlikely after yet another stellar performance by Justin Duchscherer on Tuesday that saw him go eight strong innings against the Diamondbacks.

Our View:Casilla worked 1 2/3 innings at Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, making him unavailable for at least a day or two. Currently Casilla has no fantasy value in traditional formats.
June 11, 2008
Oakland RHP Santiago Casilla continues to work through rehab in the minors and could rejoin the A's as soon as this weekend, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Casilla has battled right elbow soreness and has been on the DL since May 16th. On Tuesday, Casilla threw the first inning of Stockton's game against Bakersfield, retiring the side in order with two strikeouts. Casilla will make a second rehab appearance with Triple-A Sacramento on Friday and, if all goes well there, the righty could be making a return to the club's 25-man roster soon after.

Santiago Casilla threw 29 pitches in a simulated game on Sunday, according to the SF Chronicle. He used his fastball, slider, and changeup, and felt no pain following the session. He is recovering from right elbow soreness.

Our View:Manager Bob Geren noted that Casilla will likely make rehab outings Tuesday at Single-A Stockton and Friday at Triple-A Sacramento, and could be activated from the DL after those appearances, barring a setback.
June 8, 2008
Santiago Casilla, who is working his way back from right elbow soreness, will throw a simulated game Sunday morning, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:Casilla is likely a week or so away from returning, assuming he has no setbacks.
June 3, 2008
Santiago Casilla threw 30 pitches off a mound on Monday, according to the SF Chronicle. He is recovering from a strained elbow ligament, but said everything was feeling good after his session.

Our View:He believes he is around a week or so away from game action. It is likely that Oakland will send him on a rehab assignment before he is activated.
May 29, 2008
Santiago Casilla visited Dr. James Andrews in Alabama, and Andrews confirmed the original diagnosis, which was a strained elbow ligament, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:Casilla already has begun the Athletics' throwing program, and could be back in mid-June if he progresses well.
May 20, 2008
Santiago Casilla's right elbow injury is not as severe as the team has initially feared, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:Casilla has a mild ligament sprain, but he will begin throwing again after resting for the next four days. That means that he could likely be back in a month or less.
May 18, 2008
The Oakland A's report RHP Santiago Casilla is recovering nicely but the team still has no timetable for his return, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Casilla went to the DL on Friday after soreness in his right elbow led to worries. Casillas threw just one pitch against the Cleveland Indians that day, hit for a home run by shortstop Jhonny Peralta. An MRI failed to reveal any extensive or concerning damage in the elbow, and while Casilla reports no pain in the arm, the A's are being cautious in bringing him back to action. The team reports they will be putting Casilla through further investigation upon their return to Oakland on Monday.
May 16, 2008
Santiago Casilla was placed on the DL on Friday with soreness in his right elbow, according to The Sports Network. The team called up infielder Gregorio Petit who was hitting .304 with a .448 batting average with RISP.

Our View:Casilla was simply dominating so far with a 10.24 K/9 mark and a 0.83 WHIP through 19.1 innings, so this is a big blow to a strong A's pen. There isn't much info to go on yet, so we don't know if Casilla will need to miss more than the 15 days.
May 15, 2008
Santiago Casilla has sustained an apparent arm injury during action with Cleveland today, according to the AP. He threw just one pitch, after which he began shaking his arm and motioning that he did not want to continue.

Our View:We will keep you posted on his status.
May 6, 2008
Santiago Casilla worked another scoreless inning and earned his first save of the season on Tuesday. He has yet to allow a run over 17.1 innings.

Our View:Casilla was presumably used on Tuesday because Huston Street pitched the previous two days. Street remains the closer, but it seems like Casilla is the No. 2 guy is at this point.
May 5, 2008
Santiago Casilla is still yet to allow a run over 16.1 innings of work, according to MLB.com. That is the longest season-opening scoreless streak by an A's reliever since Jim Corsi began the 1995 season with an 18.1-inning streak.

Our View:Casilla also racked up 20 strikeouts over the span, with only two walks allowed. He did not record any saves, but he does have one win to his credit. Casilla ranks as one of the top relievers in the league right now.
February 21, 2008
Santiago Casilla continues to have visa issues reports the A's team website. Skipper Geren said he wasn't aware as to why his middle reliever is still experiencing visa problems. Casilla registered a 3-1 record, recorded two saves and had a 4.44 ERA in 46 games with the A's last year. His 9.24 K/9 was impressive.

Santiago Casilla have yet to report to Spring Training, according to the team's official website. Casilla has a "visa issue," manager Bob Geren said. Casilla registered a 3-1 record, recorded two saves and had a 4.44 ERA in 46 games with the A's last year. His 9.24 K/9 is impressive and is a quality that organizations look for for when seeking eighth and ninth inning options.
