Phil Hughes will throw "a ton of changeups" in his first spring start this Friday, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

Our View:The Yankees are really encouraging Hughes to hone and refine the pitch this spring, likely another sign that they are leaning toward giving him, and not Joba Chamberlain, the fifth spot in their rotation.

The Yankees are trying to encourage Phil Hughes to add a changeup to his arsenal of pitches, according to the New York Times. Skipper Joe Girardi said, "When you are developing a pitch, you have to pick your time to use it. This is the time to work on it a lot and see if we can continue to improve it. You want to put a thought into a hitter's head. You are just not going to see two pitches."

Our View:Hughes fired 12 changeups during his session today, and perfecting the pitch could help his chances of winning the No. 5 spot in the Yankees' rotation.
