September 14, 2008
George Sherrill looked rusty on Sunday allowing three runs while recording just one out, according to the Washington Post. "A little extra adrenaline I guess," said Sherrill who had been out for about a month due to shoulder inflammation. "I've got to relax a little bit, find my rhythm and get the timing going."

Our View:Sherrill's ERA us up to 4.97, and his late season struggles have put a damper on a season that includes 31 saves. Ideally, Sherill would serve as a setup man, so don't be surprised if he ends up in that role in 2009.
September 11, 2008
Updating an earlier report, George Sherrill has been activated from the DL following his bout with left shoulder inflammation, according to the AP.

Our View:The Orioles lost 16 of 19 games while he was on the shelf, and he is expected to resume his role as the closer immediately. He held a high 1.49 WHIP but converted 31 saves with 54 strikeouts over 50.1 innings, and should be penciled back into fantasy lineups.
September 11, 2008
George Sherrill, who was placed on the DL with left shoulder inflammation August 19, will be activated Friday if he has no pain or soreness today, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:The Orioles' bullpen is depleted, and manager Dave Trembley has no other choice but to place Sherrill back as the closer immediately upon his return. Sherrill has a high 1.49 WHIP but converted 31 saves for the club this season, and should be penciled back into fantasy lineups for the closing weeks of the season.
September 9, 2008
George Sherrill, who is recovering from left shoulder inflammation, is slated to throw a simulated game Wednesday, according to the Baltimore Sun. Manager Dave Trembley said, "If he feels OK, he'll be activated, probably a few days after that."

Our View:Sherrill is expected to resume his closer's role upon his return with Chris Ray not expected back.
September 2, 2008
George Sherrill, who is dealing with left shoulder inflammation, made 25 throws from 100 feet and felt fine, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:He'll do it again before Wednesday night's game and if all goes favorably without a setback, he'll throw a bullpen session Friday. He will resume his closer's role upon his return as Chris Ray is not expected back.
August 30, 2008
George Sherrill, who is recovering from left shoulder inflammation, resumed his throwing program Saturday and is scheduled for a pen session on Wednesday, according to the AP.

Our View:Chris Ray is not expected to return this season, so Sherrill will not be pushed from the closer's job when he comes back to Baltimore, which could be in early September, barring a setback.
August 28, 2008
Orioles closer George Sherrill will come off the DL on Monday and return to his role at the back-end of the Orioles pen. According to the Baltimore Sun Sherrill will have one more light workout then a practice throwing off the mound.

Our View:Sherrill has 31 saves this year in 37 opportunities.
August 27, 2008
Orioles closer George Sherrill will be activated on September 1 when rosters expand should his rehab continue going smoothly, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:Sherrill should return to the closer's role when he gets back to the big leagues. He had struggled a bit before going on the DL, which is evident by his 1.49 WHIP. That is certainly not a number that should please fantasy owners, although his 31 saves ease the pain.
August 26, 2008
George Sherrill may play catch today for the first time since going on the DL with left shoulder inflammation, according to the Baltimore Sun. He says he can raise his arm above his shoulder again and is optimistic about a quick recovery.

Our View:Sherrill should be back in September, but the club may take it easy with him while they audition their younger prospects.
August 19, 2008
The Orioles have placed closer George Sherrill on the 15-day DL due to inflammation in his left shoulder, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Our View:The Sun points to Jim Johnson as the best candidate for saves, although the Orioles could use a committee. Sherrill could be back by September 1.
August 19, 2008
George Sherrill has stiffness in his throwing shoulder and could be shut down for a few days, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:Sherrill's shoulder stiffened before Monday's game against Boston, so he will be further examined by a doctor. He has been struggling as of late, and though he provides fantasy owners saves, his 4.47 ERA and 1.49 WHIP are awfully high for a closer.
August 15, 2008
George Sherrill was claimed through waivers by at least one unnamed American League team and was pulled back by the Orioles, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:The Orioles have now lost revocable waivers on Sherrill, meaning he cannot be placed on waivers again without the risk of losing him with no compensation in return. So the lefty reliever will remain with Baltimore for the rest of the 2008 season.
August 10, 2008
George Sherrill was not pitching in a save situation, but he still allowed three runs in his one inning of work.

Our View:Sherrill does have 31 saves, but his recent performances have been poor. In July his ERA was 6.75. So far in August it's 11.25.
July 30, 2008
Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated suggests that George Sherrill may be off the market.

Our View:The Orioles were hoping to get a starting shortstop in exchange for Sherrill, but they haven't been able to work out a deal for one that satisfies them. Milwaukee's Alcides Escobar and Anaheim's Erick Aybar were appealing to them, but neither team would give them up for Sherrill, who has nailed down 30 saves so far with Baltimore.
July 27, 2008
George Sherrill pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his 30th save of the season. His name has been mentioned in trade talks lately and the Orioles could still move him before the deadline.

Our View:The lefty has had a bad month and this appearance marks his first 1-2-3 inning since June 17. Still, he has exceeded expectations as few people expected Sherrill to record 30 saves when he joined the Orioles in the offseason.
July 24, 2008
George Sherrill made a ninth inning appearance for the Orioles despite being down 7-1 to the Blue Jays. He struck out two, and gave up two singles while throwing 19 pitches in the inning.

Our View:The Orioles had gone through four relievers prior to Sherrill during the doubleheader, but it may be more likely that they were showcasing the lefty for teams that may be interested in the closer. He has a 6.23 ERA over his last 15 appearances.
July 22, 2008
George Sherrill is on several team's radar, including the Cardinals and Brewers, and the Orioles may trade him if they find a deal that suits their needs, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:The Orioles are believed to be looking for two or three prospects in exchange for Sherrill, which would ideally consist of a shortstop.
July 16, 2008
Whether or not George Sherrill remains with the Orioles the rest of the year is in question, according to the Baltimore Sun. The Sun speculated that Sherrill could be moved, possibly to the Dodgers, now that Takashi Saito is out of action for at least six weeks.

Our View:Rumors like this one are bound to make the rounds between now and the trading deadline, and it wouldn't be a shock to see the Dodgers pick up a more experienced arm to team with newly anointed closer Jonathan Broxton at the back end of the Dodgers pen.
July 11, 2008
George Sherrill faced two batters to get his 28th save on Friday. First, he walked Dustin Pedroia to laod the bases. Then he promptly struck out Kevin Youkilis for the final out of the game.

Our View:Sherrill's made it a bit too interesting lately (he blew his sixth save on Thursday), but it does not look like the Orioles have anyone to spell him of save opportunities.
July 10, 2008
George Sherrill picked up his sixth blown save of the season and then his fourth loss as the Orioles fell 6-5 on Thursday.

Our View:Sherrill is showing some major cracks of late with four of the blown saves and three of the loses in his last 11 appearances as his ERA has risen from 3.23 to 4.12. He doesn't appear to be close to losing his job, but that doesn't mean you would be dumb to explore his value in a trade, especially since he could be on the move to a team where he might end up serving as a setup man.
July 6, 2008
George Sherrill had another unremarkable appearance on Sunday. He lasted 1.1 innings, walked two, gave up two hits and one run.

Our View:The All-Star closer has just one save in his last four appearances. He has totalled 3.2 innings, five hits, three walks, two home runs and four earned runs in that span. Otherwise, it has been a spectacular 2008 for Sherrill. This could be a sign that teams are figuring out the lefty.
June 30, 2008
George Sherrill blew his fifth save on Monday, his second in as many nights. Sherrill's mistake pitch resulting in a Miguel Olivo home run was part of an overall bad performance by the Baltimore bullpen, which blew a 5-1 lead after starter Brian Burres permitted one run in the first five innings.

Our View:Sherrill has been one of the good stories in the first half of the season and for the most part has been exceptional in his 39 appearances. However, there will be talk that the lefty has been overworked with his second straight blown save.
June 29, 2008
George Sherrill blew his fourth save on Sunday. The Orioles took the lead in the top of the 12th against the Nationals, but the closer served up a walk and a two-run homer after getting two outs in the bottom of the inning. Sherrill's ERA grew to 3.53.

Our View:Fantasy owners can hardly complain. Sherrill was a low-cost reliever heading into the season, and he already owns 26 saves. His job is safe.
June 20, 2008
George Sherrill picked up two walks on his way to a scoreless ninth inning during his 25th save of the season for the Orioles.

Our View:With a 4.86 BB/9 mark, Sherrill continues to play with fire on most nights. Lucky for him he is striking out almost a batter an inning while holding batters to less than a .180 average.
June 19, 2008
George Sherrill saved his 24th game of the season in Thursday's win over the Astros, and notched his seventh in June.

Our View:George Sherrill entered with the bases loaded in the ninth and gave up a sacrifice fly to Kazuo Matsui and a run-scoring infield hit to Miguel Tejada before retiring Lance Berkman on a short fly ball to end the game with the O's winning 7-5.
June 17, 2008
As promised, Baltimore LHP George Sherrill was available for closing duties tonight and did just that, earning his 23rd save of the season as the Orioles beat the Astros 6-5. Sherrill closed out the ninth, striking out one with two fly outs, all influenced over just 14 pitches.

Our View:Sherrill now touts six saves through June with a 3.68 ERA.
June 17, 2008
Orioles closer George Sherrill is available for use this evening despite reports of an ailing and "dead" arm, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Sherrill was 12-for-12 in save opportunities prior to this past weekend's three-game series with the Pirates; he came out of that series with a blown save and a loss. On Sunday, after the Orioles tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, Sherrill was once again ineffective, allowing the Pirates to take the lead in the 10th and ultimately seal the win. After Sunday's game, the closer said he felt his arm was dead and didn't feel as though he could get anybody out. However, today Sherrill spoke with reporters and says his arm is just fine, stating his words were more out of frustration than pain. Sherrill has appeared in seven of the Orioles' past 12 games, is second in the American League in saves with 22 and is tied for the league lead in appearances this season with 33.
June 13, 2008
George Sherrill earned his 22nd save of the season in Friday's 9-6 win over the Pirates. The left-hander pitched a perfect ninth inning.

Our View:Sherrill's 22 saves is second to K-Rod of the Angels who has 27.
June 3, 2008
George Sherrill recorded his 19th save of the season on Tuesday night, retiring the Twins in order while striking out one in a 5-3 win.

Our View:Only K-Rod has more saves than Sherrill this year. Yet another reason why you should not pay for saves on auction day.
May 17, 2008
George Sherrill pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out one, for his 17th save in 19 chances.

Our View:Sherrill has four saves in the four Orioles games this week.
May 17, 2008
George Sherrill picked up his 16th save in 18 opportunities on Friday night, pitching a perfect ninth inning. Sherrill has been good despite his lack of command. His 10 walks in 20 innings is concerning and his K Rate is south of his 2007 numbers.

Our View:In his defense, the southpaw is in a different environment and has a different role than the one he held with Seattle, and one of this two blown saves was a game in Oakland when he entered the game with the bases loaded and one out. He proceeded to record two ordinary outs -- but gave up a game tying run in the process.
May 16, 2008
George Sherrill nailed down his 16th save of the season in Friday's 5-3 win over Washington. He did not allow a hit or walk in the ninth inning.

Our View:Six of his saves have come over seven appearances in May. He has only allowed six hits over that span as well.
May 14, 2008
George Sherrill registered a league high 15th save on Wednesday afternoon as the Orioles beat John Lester and the Red Sox, 6-3.

Our View:His league leading 15th save wasn't easy, though. Sherrill gave up two hits that sandwiched a double play before finally getting Alex Cora to foul out to left field.
May 10, 2008
Baltimore closer George Sherrill picked up his 13th save of the season, putting the Kansas City Royals to bed in the ninth, 6-5. Sherrill pitched the ninth inning, allowing one hit and one walked seasoned, allowing one earned run to score, with two strike outs.

Our View:While Sherrill is getting the saves, he has been anything but relieving. His 4.41 ERA is all too stressful for fantasy owners while his propensity for walks is a recipe for disaster.
May 9, 2008
George Sherrill worked the ninth for his 12th save in 14 opportunities this year.

Our View:One of Sherrill's blown saves came in Oakland when he entered the game with the bases loaded with one out. He proceeded to get the next two hitters on ground balls outs, but the game tying run that scored resulted in a blown save. One of the worst rules in baseball.
April 28, 2008
Baltimore closer George Sherrill suffered his first blown save in 10 chances this year after giving up an 11th inning home run to Juan Uribe.

Our View:Sherrill's save total has assisted fantasy owners. His 4.66 ERA is high for a closer, but his 1.14 WHIP suggests he's pitched into some bad luck. The O's closer remains a starting option in all formats.
April 25, 2008
George Sherrill is a perfect 8-for-8 in save opportunities this season, according to MLB.com. He holds a 4.82 ERA over 9.1 innings, but has eight strikeouts, and a favorable 1.18 WHIP.

Our View:The former Mariners' reliever has proven to be a steal for the Orioles in the early going, as well as for fantasy owners who landed him in the late rounds on draft day.
April 25, 2008
George Sherrill pitched the ninth inning on Thursday night to pick up his eighth save of the season.

Our View:Sherrill has been a godsend for the Orioles in the early going, as well as a true weapon for those fantasy leaguers that invested a late round pick in the hard throwing lefty.
April 23, 2008
George Sherrill rebounded from his first poor outing of the year to pick up his seventh save on Wednesday night.

Our View:Sherrill has now appeared in nine games and he has a win and seven saves. Seems like he can handle the closers role now doesn't it?
April 17, 2008
George Sherrill recorded his first win of the season in an extra innings victory over the Chicago White Sox. Sherrill worked one inning, allowing a walk and struck out one.

Our View:Sherrill has six saves and a win in the teams first 16 games of the season.
April 14, 2008
George Sherrill saved his sixth game of the season on Monday, but he also served up a two-run homer to Alex Rios. The southpaw hadn't allowed a hit or run in each of his previous five outings.

Our View:We obviously didn't expect Sherrill to stay perfect, and he was fortunate to have a three-run lead.
April 7, 2008
George Sherrill needed 14 pitches on Monday to close out his fourth save of the early going for the Orioles. Sherrill has allowed two walks in 3.2 innings this season though batters have yet to reach base via a hit. It's too early to tab him an all-star, but this strong start should waylay any fears that anyone had that he couldn't handle the closers role.
April 5, 2008
Who said this closing thing was difficult? George Sherrill now has three saves in three appearances for the Orioles after Saturday night. Sherrill figures to be locked into the role in Baltimore, and if he keeps pitching the way he has early in the year there will be a whole lot of happy fantasy owners out there that grabbed Sherrill late.
March 25, 2008
George Sherrill was dominant in his lone inning of work on Tuesday as he held the Marlins hitless, with two strikeouts. Sherrill will be the Orioles' closer this season, and today's performance is a main reason why.
March 18, 2008
According to the Baltimore Sun, it is official. George Sherrill will begin the 2008 season as the Orioles' closer. Manager Dave Trembley made the announcement on Tuesday morning while the Twins took batting practice in preparation for today's spring game with the O's. "It feels good," Sherrill said. "I think any short reliever wants to be the closer, that go-to guy." The former independent league left-hander has the biggest role of his career and should be considered a mid-round option in mixed formats.
March 12, 2008
Orioles manager Dave Trembley said several decisions will be made after Monday's open spring date, this according to the Baltimore Sun. The decision fantasy owners are interested in --the identity of the Orioles' closer. George Sherrill, who came into spring training with an eye on the ninth inning role, has done everything the staff has asked of him. Sherrill, who had a career 10.48 ERA in spring training entering this year, has allowed just one earned run, two hits and no walks in five innings. Barring a meltdown in the next two weeks, Sherrill will receive the save chances beginning on opening day.
March 11, 2008
George Sherrill is reportedly the front-runner to be the Orioles' featured closer this season, according to MLB.com. Manager Trembley said that he is leaning toward Sherrill as his closer and added, "I would say he's leading the pack right now. He's got a leg up. He wants to be the guy. I know that about him."
March 10, 2008
George Sherrill pitched two scoreless, hitless innings on Monday, the third straight appearance he has allowed no hits for the Orioles. Sherrill seems to be over the leg issues that plagued him early in camp, and he has solidified his role of closer to open the year with the Orioles given his run of dominance.
March 8, 2008
George Sherrill continues his bid to fill the role of closer for the Orioles this season, closing the only three batters he pitched to today without problems. Sherrill has now thrown 1-2-3 innings in each of his last two opportunities and is asserting his name as the leading candidate for the coveted closing role in Baltimore.
February 27, 2008
George Sherrill will throw a side session on Friday, and if that goes well he should be able to pitch on Monday, according to the Baltimore Sun. Sherrill has been dealing with a strained hamstring, so at least his arm is sound. Sherrill should still be considered the lead in the closers battle at this point for the Orioles.
February 26, 2008
Manager Dave Trembley said George Sherrill will throw a side session in a couple of days and could be ready to pitch in a spring game early next week, according to the Baltimore Sun. Sherrill, who is considered the favorite to close for the O's, strained his hamstring last Friday. Keep a close eye on how he bounces back.
February 23, 2008
George Sherrill, who strained his right hamstring during Friday's practice, told MLB.com it felt about the same Saturday morning. "It's still too early to tell," Sherrill said. "It's just one of those things that happen." Sherrill, who has a chance to be the Orioles' closer this season, did have treatment on it Friday and Saturday and plans to be cautious for awhile. The Orioles are calling it a mild strain and Sherrill is day-to-day.
February 22, 2008
George Sherrill, expected to vie for the Orioles closers role, tweaked his hamstring on Friday and was removed from practice, according to the Baltimore Sun. No word is yet known on the status of his injury. At this point one would expect many players to have little bumps and bruises, so hopefully this is but a speed bump on Sherrill's way to claiming the closers role this spring.
February 14, 2008
Chris Ray, who had season ending Tommy John Surgery on his right elbow last year, expects to be pitching again sometime this season. In the mean time, Baltimore wants to give recently acquired George Sherrill a chance to earn the closer job. Sherrill a set-up man with the Seattle Mariners is excited about the opportunity, according to the Baltimore Sun. "I'd love to close. I think it's every reliever's goal. But just being part of something is all I can ask for," he said. Sherrill, a minor league closer, has four career saves in four major league seasons.
February 8, 2008
The Orioles acquired George Sherrill, outfielder Adam Jones and pitching prospects Chris Tillman, Tony Butler and Kam Mickolio from the Mariners Friday in exchange for Erik Bedard. Sherrill posted a nifty 2.36 ERA and 0.99 WHIP to go along with an 11.04 K/9 rate in 73 games last year for the M's. He should be given a chance to compete for the O's closer gig.
January 16, 2008
George Sherrill avoided arbitration by signing a one-year contract with the Mariners on Tuesday, according to the Seattle Times. The contract is for $980,000 with $60,000 in performance bonuses. Assuming Sherrill isn't dealt to Baltimore in a possible Erik-Bedard deal, he will once again provide stability in the back of Seattle's bullpen.
