Player Notes
August 24, 2008
Kenji Johjima broke out of a 1-for-15 slump by going 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored to help the Mariners take down the A's, 8-4.

Our View:Johjima has been hideous this season, and nobody should get too excited over this game. Coming into this contest, Johjima's OPS was a pathetic .558.

Though he signed a three-year, $24 million contract extension in April, Kenji Johjima has played poorly this season, and has not seen the field since August 4, as Jeff Clement has become the regular catcher, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Our View:Johjima isn't happy about the situation, but what should he expect? He has a .253 on-base percentage and .294 slugging percentage in nearly 300 at-bats this season. Clement at least has power, with five home runs in 145 at-bats.
July 10, 2008
With the release of Richie Sexson, it's possible Kenji Johjima could see some time at first base, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Our View:Johjima wouldn't represent much of an upgrade offensively over Sexson at this point, though he obviously does not strike out nearly as much. Johjima's .219 average and three home runs are poor numbers for a utility infielder, much less a starting first baseman.

Kenji Johjima finally quit looking over his shoulder and broke out of his 1-for-19 slump on Sunday. The starting catcher had two huge hits against the Yankees.

Our View:Expect Johjima to return to his career mean, and soon. His current .219/.258/.301 line is ugly, but it should be explained off as a slow start -- more than a digression of his skill set.

Kenji Johjima will yield to backup Jamie Burke on Wednesday, according to the Seattle Times. Manager John McLaren said he wanted to match the pitching and catching batteries that work together when he can. The manager apparently thinks Burke meshes well with Jarrod Washburn. Johjima will be back in the lineup for tomorrow's day game.

Our View:The article also mentions that Burke is likely to catch Erik Bedard for the foreseeable future.
