Player Notes
August 31, 2008
Scott Baker finally picked up his eighth win. The right-hander held the A's to six hits and one run over six innings on Sunday. He improved to 8-4. Baker posted a 0-1 record over his last six outings.

Our View:Baker had a couple rough starts this August, but he has now posted three straight quality appearances. He remains a solid middle-of-the-rotation starter in mixed fantasy leagues despite the lack of victories.
August 27, 2008
Minnesota RHP Scott Baker did his best to keep his Twins in the mix, but the offense failed to formulate runs and Baker suffered in the end, pitching 6 2/3 innings to allow three runs (all earned) on 10 hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:With the loss, Baker falls to 7-4 on the season with a 3.75 ERA. This was his first decision in five starts through August, giving up 16 combined earned runs along the way.
July 31, 2008
Scott Baker had an up and down performance, giving up four earned runs in six innings to Chicago, but also striking out eight White Sox hitters.

Our View:After not walking three hitters in one game all season, Baker has now done it twice in a row. He still remains a good option in fantasy due to his low WHIP and moderate ERA.
July 26, 2008
It wasn't the prettiest of his seven wins, but Twins pitcher Scott Baker got the job done, surrendering three runs in five innings.

Our View:Baker uncharacteristically walked three batters, which accounts for 1/6 of his total for the entire season.
July 24, 2008
Since returning from the DL, Scott Baker has made nine starts. In those starts, his ERA is 2.79 and his WHIP is 1.06. For the year, he has a 3.26 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP to go with a 6-3 record.

Our View:If you're looking for a pitcher on the waiver wire, there's a good chance Baker's available. He has 76 strikeouts to just 15 walks.
July 20, 2008
The Rangers and Twins hooked up for barnburner today, posting six combined hits between them in a battle of pitching with Texas emerging with the 1-0 win. For Minnesota, it was the effort of RHP Scott Baker that went wasted, pitching eight innings to allow just one run on two hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Our View:Baker falls to 6-3 on the season, though the three losses have come over his last eight starts.
July 12, 2008
Minnesota RHP Scott Baker picked up his sixth win of the season today, helping his Twins to a 6-5 victory over the Tigers. Baker pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (all earned) over six hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:The bulk of the damage was done on two homers, but it wasn't enough to stop the Twins, posting 12 total hits to give Baker plenty of offensive support. Baker now touts four wins over his last five starts.
July 1, 2008
Minnesota RHP Scott Baker showed well in support of the 6-4 win over the Tigers, pitching six innings to allow three runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:Baker came out of June with consecutive wins and keeps the tide rolling this evening. He has allowed just seven total earned runs over 18 innings of work during that span, touting three walks versus 15 strikeouts.
June 26, 2008
Scott Baker improved to 4-2 on Thursday allowing three runs in six innings against the Padres. Baker allowed six hits and two walks while striking out three.

Our View:Baker owns a 3.57 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP after 11 starts this year and is only being held back from being a big time story because of his low total of four victories. He has been great this season.
June 20, 2008
Scott Baker won for the first time in over two months on Friday night as he held the Diamondbacks to just one earned run over six innings. Baker walked one and struck out seven in the win.

Our View:Baker is only 3-2 despite a 3.47 ERA and strong 1.19 WHIP as he continues to baffle hitters on his way toward establishing himself as a legitimate fantasy starter.
June 16, 2008
Scott Baker was the first pitcher in Twins history to record four strikeouts in an inning on Sunday, according to MLB.com. "I didn't even think about it," Baker said of the feat. "I came in [the clubhouse] and heard somebody say something about it. Yeah, that's pretty crazy.

Our View:This was the first time an AL pitcher accomplished the feat since 2003 when Kurt Suzuki turned the trick for the Mariners.
June 15, 2008
Scott Baker gave up three earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Brewers, with two walks and nine strikeouts.

Our View:Baker fell to 2-2 over nine starts, with a 3.71 ERA. This was his highest strikeout total for the season, and allowed two or less earned runs over his previous three starts. He is having a solid season and should bounce back fine.
June 10, 2008
Don't blame Scott Baker for the Twins' loss on Tuesday night. The right-hander held the Indians to eight hits and one run over seven full innings. Baker walked one and struck out one.

Our View:Baker has allowed only three runs over 12 innings since coming off the DL. He's not the most exciting arm, but he can fill out the back of a fantasy rotation in mixed leagues.
June 5, 2008
Scott Baker only allowed two runs on five hits over five innings in Thursday's 3-2 loss to Baltimore, and he was dealt a no decision in his first game back from his strained right groin ailment.

Our View:That was a favorable return for him, and he had good control, with only one walk and three strikeouts.
June 5, 2008
Scott Baker has been activated from the DL and returned to the mound against the Orioles Thursday, according to ESPN.com. Baker has recovered from his strained right groin, and Manager Ron Gardenhire said, "He's a guy we've counted on from the beginning. Hopefully he'll get back and get going here and be one of our solid starters."

Our View:Baker will be limited to 85 or 90 pitches. He is taking Boof Bonser's spot in the rotation, who has been moved to the pen. Baker held a solid 1.09 WHIP over six starts prior to landing on the DL.
June 2, 2008

May 31, 2008
Scott Baker is scheduled to start tonight for Single-A Fort Myers, according to the Star Tribune.

May 23, 2008
Scott Baker threw his second consecutive painless batting practice on Thursday and is scheduled to pitch three or four innings in a rehab game on Monday, according to MLB.com. If all goes well, the plan is for him to do the same thing five days later. The righty is coming back from a strained right groin. "If we feel he's ready to be here [after the second start], he'll be here," said Anderson. "If not, we'll give him another one [rehab start]."

Our View:All appears well for Baker so far. He was pitching well before the injury, so you'll want to keep tabs on his progress.
May 16, 2008

Scott Baker's bullpen session was successful, and he will leave Friday for Fort Myers, Florida, where he’ll throw two bullpen sessions and likely pitch in an extended spring training game next Thursday, according to the Star Tribune. He is recovering from a strained right groin.

Our View:He could return to Minnesota in early June, barring a setback.
May 13, 2008
Minnesota RHP Scott Baker was in the bullpen throwing a light "tennis shoe" session today in an effort to test his strained right groin muscle, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Baker reports there is still discomfort in the muscle, leading the Twins to delay any potential rehab assignments in the minors. Today was the first time Baker has thrown off a mound since May 3rd. "Groins are a funny thing when you are a pitcher," said manager Ron Gardenhire. "You just have to be really careful with these things. We saw that a few years ago with (Brad) Radke. He told us after two weeks he was fine and then went out and really blew it out. So you've got to be leery about that. We let (Baker) try to pitch once (with the injured groin) and we're not going to let him do it again until he's healthy." We will update as news comes forth.
May 12, 2008
Scott Baker is eligible to come off the DL next Monday but his strained right groin is taking a bit longer than expected to heal meaning that Baker likely won't be activated when the 15 days are up, according to MLB.com. "They don't want me to push it trying to hit that date," Baker said.

Our View:This isn't seen as a major setback at all since the team still hopes to have Baker back at some point in the near future, possibly even by the end of next week. Glen Perkins should continue to stay in the rotation until Baker is healthy.
May 6, 2008
The Twins have placed Scott Baker on the 15-day DL due to a strained right groin, MLB.com confirms. The move won't become official until Wednesday morning.

Our View:It sounds like Baker may only need to miss the minimum amount of time, and Glen Perkins has been called up to fill in the rotation gap.
May 6, 2008
The Twins are expected to place righty Scott Baker on the 15-day DL, so he can fully heal from a mild right groin muscle strain, according to the Star Tribune. The team is going to be very cautious with Baker, who was off to a solid start (1.09 WHIP, with only five walks over 33 innings) before getting hurt. Baker was forced out of his last two starts due to the ailment.

Our View:The team will now need a starter for Saturday night against the Red Sox to cover his spot. Glen Perkins, who is at Triple-A Rochester, is a candidate for the start. The team could also pick a spot starter from their bullpen.
May 4, 2008
Scott Baker will have an MRI exam on his strained right groin muscle on Monday, according to the Star Tribune. The team will have a better idea of how to proceed with the injury at that point.

Our View:The Twins could play it safe, and place Baker on the DL. The team could then call up Kevin Slowey to start on Thursday against Chicago.
May 3, 2008
Scott Baker left Saturday's game against the Tigers after three innings due to an apparent groin injury, according to the AP. Baker yielded just one hit with two strikeouts in three innings, and was replaced by reliever Brian Bass in the fourth.

April 30, 2008
Scott Baker threw his scheduled bullpen session on Wednesday morning, and felt no soreness in his strained groin muscle, keeping him on target to start Saturday's game against the Tigers, according to MLB.com. Manager Ron Gardenhire had stated that if Baker had any hint of soreness in the muscle during the session, the team was going to put him on the DL. Gardenhire added, "He ran as hard as he could run, threw as hard as he could throw and he feels nothing. So I can't argue with that. He's ready to go for Saturday and that's great news."

Our View:The team will still monitor Baker over the coming days to make sure he doesn't experience any residual soreness. If he does, Gardenhire commented that Baker will not make the start. Baker was 2-0 with a 1.17 WHIP over 30 innings, with 27 strikeouts, and is worthy of your starting lineup when he returns.
April 29, 2008
Scott Baker is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday to see how his strained groin muscle feels, according to MLB.com. As of now, he's scheduled to take his turn on Saturday, but if Baker has even the slightest hint of discomfort in his groin, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said the pitcher will not make the start and could end up on the DL. "We're going to be very careful with this thing," Gardenhire said. "He's going to have to have no issues for us to put him back out there. The plan is for him to pitch Saturday, but that could change tomorrow with his bullpen session."

Our View:We'll let you know how tomorrow's session goes.
April 15, 2008

April 15, 2008
Scott Baker will be aiming for a 3-0 start when he takes the hill against Detroit tonight, according to MLB.com. He will have a good chance to do so, as the Tigers are off to a shaky start, and Baker went 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA over two career starts at Comerica Park.

He pitched three innings in a minor league game effectively on Wednesday and Manager Gardenhire expects him to be ready to pitch the fifth game of the season and stated, "Scott said he felt good today, and he's feeling stronger. Scott Baker reported on Tuesday that he feels OK and has improved his chances of avoiding the DL at the start of the season, according to the Star Tribune. Baker felt sluggish while playing long-toss on Monday and there was doubt over whether he could stay on schedule to start the Twins’ fifth game of the season. But Baker stated that he will be able to make his start in a minor-league game Wednesday. If that goes fine, he’ll likely pitch in another minor-league game on Sunday. If that goes fine, he’ll pitch April 4 against the Royals at the Metrodome. Baker is notably nursing a strained lat muscle and hasn't pitched in a Grafefruit League game since March 8. This is promising news and he commented, “This morning, I ate a normal breakfast. I feel a lot better.”
