August 15, 2008 An MRI on Ryan Sweeney's right thumb revealed only a sprain, according to MLB.com. However, manager Bob Geren still isn't sure if Sweeney will be available to return when eligible on August 28. "His thumb is just sprained, and there is no significant damage," Geren said. "When his mobility comes back and he's able to play, he'll play. It is great news. Obviously, he is still very sore. When the 15 days are up, we'll see where he's at." Our View:Sweeney has slumped recently, but overall he's had a pretty good rookie year. Hopefully he'll be back before the end of the month, but he'll definitely be back sometime in September. |

Our View:Sweeney hurt the thumb making a sliding catch on his stomach on Tuesday night; he's also been playing with a bruised right hand and a torn left pinkie tendon to go along with an ankle sprain. The rookie has been one of the A's few consistent offensive performances this year, and considering how little the team has produced in the second half, his loss certainly won't help. |

Sweeney should definitely receive the bulk of the playing time against righties, while Denorfia will still probably play most of the time against lefties. |
