Player Notes
March 28, 2009
Jose Capellan got tagged for his second straight outing, giving up five runs off six hits and three walks while striking out three in five innings against the Nationals.

Our View:It's one thing to get rocked, and quite another to get rocked by Washington. Capellan was in contention for the No. 5 spot in Houston but can't be too comfortable at the moment. Russ Ortiz could be who the Astros opt to enter the season with.

Jose Capellan was rocked for five earned runs on seven hits over five innings in Saturday's 9-7 win over Toronto, with one walk and no strikeouts.

Our View:This poor performance from Capellan should push Russ Ortiz closer to winning the fifth spot in the Astros' rotation.

Jose Capellan will start today's Grapefruit League game against Toronto, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:Capellan needs a strong outing while competing with Russ Ortiz for the fifth spot in the rotation. Ortiz is currently considered the favorite for the job.
March 15, 2009
Jose Capellan went 4.2 innings in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Atlanta. He allowed no runs on four hits, while striking out four.

Our View:Capellan has now gone 9.2 innings without giving up a run. He entered camp as a long shot to win a job in the rotation, and he is still likely a long relief man unless the Astros move him ahead of Brian Moehler or Brandon Backe on the depth chart.
March 4, 2009
Jose Capellan threw three scoreless innings against a Venezuela team that features Miguel Cabrera, Bobby Abreu, Magglio Ordonez, Melvin Mora and more. The Astros tied Venezuela 4-4.

Our View:Capellan is a non-roster invitee, but he did himself a huge favor today. If he can refrain from falling apart this spring, he should make the cut.
